Singapore arrested more than 5,000 foreign prostitutes last year but it is unrealistic to expect vice to be eliminated, the Home Affairs Minister has told parliament.

Wong Kan Seng was responding to a question from an MP about efforts to curb "rampant gambling and prostitution" in Singapore's red-light Geylang district.

"The vice situation in Singapore is under control," Wong said in a written response released Tuesday.

He said police across the city-state last year conducted 950 vice-related operations, up from 890 the previous year. They arrested 5,400 foreign sex workers, a 25 percent increase over 2006, he said.

Despite its reputation as a straight-laced society, prostitution is legal in Singapore, where licensed brothels operate in designated areas such as Geylang. Pimping and public solicitation are illegal.

Foreign women working voluntarily in the sex trade cannot be arrested unless they are caught offering their services out in the street or violate immigration and other laws.

Wong, who is also a deputy prime minister, said installation of closed-circuit television cameras in Geylang has helped deter solicitation.

He said daily police operations to target gambling in the back alleys of Geylang led to 280 arrests last year and an improvement in the situation.

"Illegal gambling in Geylang is not rampant," Wong said.

"But I should add that it is not realistic to expect vice to be totally eliminated," he said, particularly as the city-state seeks to promote tourism.

"Among those who come, there will be a very small number who enter under the pretext of social visits but engage in vice activities. This is the reality which Singaporeans should face up to."

Somehow I feel this is a hint of more to come on policies in dealing with vice. Seems like they are smoothing and preparing the ground for further action and this is a major initial show of force that the government is trying to do something. Anyone has the same sentiments?

I think the govt is reacting or being reactive only. Geylang is a place with its own rules, and has its own masters. Reason why so many are caught, i believe is that the 'illegal' sex industry is getting bigger too fast. If it is allowed to continue, the sex workers will go into a much wider scope of trade. For example, last time they stay around Chinatown. Slowly the okt accepts them into geylang and now, look how many of them along the roads, back streets, coffeeshops, TNs, massage palours, KTVs.

Sure must curb once a while la. At least WKS said singaporeans must also deal with their continual presence now.

I dont think the garment is interested in totally eradicating vice ... there will be more social problems ... namely rape and molestation

dun think prostitution would help to lower rape and molest.

Most of the time, rapes and molests happen for very different reason; the rapists are normally mentally disturbed or have other problems. Same for the molesters.

But by regulating it instead of suppressing it, it would help to reduce related problems like STDs, triads and drug offences.

Just my 2 cents. Btw, I not AV hor ... Dun get the wrong idea .. akekeke.

I don agree with ur comment bro. The reason that prostitution is kept one eye closed in all countries is mainly to prevent the increase in rape or molest cases.

Well, everyone is allowed his/her opinions here.

Just in my own opinions, it is hard to link the legalization of prostitution to drop in rape and molest cases. Remains to be proven but I welcome any sbf bros to prove me wrong here with valid research or studies.

Even in Singapore, the drop in rape and molest cases; is it because of legalization of prostitution or better law enforcement ?

easier for us to go "shoppin".. plus i believe its nw an iconic area in sg..

I think though there are no research done .. the legalisation of prostitution and also not catching all the illegal ones is to have at least a supply of gals for those who need it. Else those cannot tahan will either pcc, molest or rape ... I think this is the belief, whether in reality it will be or not ...

didn't know that this thrend be so political. Anyway this can be view in many ways.

1) No demand, No Supply. Higher demand, Higher supply.

2) Rapist normally has different view when raping another person, that i cannot tell you as im not a doctor. But most raping case involve with friends/relative closer to the victim. Police just mentioned that rapes has a increase although the crime rate has drop.

3) By setting up geylang do has its impact on society, from the years of operation. I believe it do keep the number of rapist down. Imaging with porno so easily availability outside or on the net, with no proper channel from us guys to discharge, the number of "predator" will only increases rather than maintaining. - personal view
