14 blinded in India in botched cataract surgery

MUMBAI: At least 14 people in western India have lost sight in one eye after botched cataract surgeries, doctors and officials said, the latest example of poor medical care in the country.

Authorities in the state of Maharashtra blamed hospital staff for failing to sterilise equipment properly and causing the blindness, following what is generally considered to be a low-risk operation.

“We have suspended three doctors and some supporting staff. If found guilty, they will be removed from the health services,” state Health Minis*ter Deepak Sawant said. — AFP
