FIFA's big two beasts have been banned from football, sending the world game into an unprecedented crisis.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini were suspended for 90 days, which effectively ends their tenures as the two most powerful figures in football.

The decision by FIFA's ethics committee — who also banned secretary general Jerome Valcke for the same period and South Korean Chung Mong-joon for six years — apparently means that Platini can no longer stand for the FIFA presidency despite his insistence that he will clear his name.

There looks no way back for either Blatter or Platini despite them both planning to make strong representations to the FIFA appeals committee in the two-day window allowed.

FIFA ethics judge, Hans-Joachim Eckert, has found enough evidence around the unexplained murky £1.35million payment to Platini in 2011 — for consultancy work completed nine years earlier — and over Blatter's sale of TV rights to fellow FIFA rogue Jack Warner for a knockdown price that later netted the Trinidadian an £11m profit.

The bans come into force immediately and mean those suspended can have no involvement in any football activity. They can also be extended for a further 45 days taking them up until just six days before the next FIFA presidential election on February 26.

An official statement from FIFA made Blatter's humiliating situation clear. It said: 'Joseph S. Blatter, for the duration of the 90-day ban, is not allowed to represent FIFA in any capacity, act on the organisation's behalf, or communicate to media or other stakeholders as a FIFA representative.'

African football chief Issa Hayatou will take temporary charge of FIFA saying: 'Amid extraordinary circumstances, I have assumed the office of FIFA president.'

But to add yet more confusion to this mess, UEFA see no need to ratify Spain's Angel Maria Villar Llona as a temporary stand-in for Platini because their executive remain supportive of their president, who, like Blatter, was still behind his desk on Thursday.

UEFA have already convened an emergency meeting of the 54 European territories in Nyon next Thursday to discuss their next move. England's David Gill and Germany's Wolfgang Niersbach are also urging FIFA's executive committee, on which they both sit, to hold a similar crisis summit, as are the Asian Football Confederation.

But the FA failed to distance themselves from Platini after his suspension, having backed him on the recommendation of chairman Greg Dyke and vice-chairman Gill before knowing the other candidates or Platini's manifesto for FIFA reform.

Bizarrely they are still effectively supporting him for the FIFA presidency in an election which the ballot regulator sources say he is no longer eligible to contest. All candidates must pass election integrity checks by the October 26 deadline and Platini's suspension rules him out of any involvement by that date.

An FA statement said: 'The FA committed this summer to supporting Mr Platini in his bid to become the next president of FIFA.

'At the FA board meeting last week we decided that remained our position while inquiries into certain allegations were being investigated. We now await the results of the ethics committee inquiry and the investigation of the Swiss attorney general. We note that Mr Platini has issued a strong statement protesting his innocence.'

Olympic president Thomas Bach certainly showed up the FA with a statesman-like response to the FIFA bans. 'Enough is enough,' he said. 'We hope that now finally, everyone at FIFA has at last understood that they cannot continue to remain passive. They must act swiftly to regain credibility because you cannot forever dissociate the credibility of FIFA from the credibility of football.'

Later Dyke added: 'If the ethics committee reaches a conclusion that Mr Platini has not behaved properly or has behaved dishonestly then of course the FA will not support him. We need to see the evidence.'

Despite the bans and the Swiss attorney general's office also investigating them, Blatter and Platini continue to deny all accusations.

Blatter's busy lawyers, American Richard Cullen and Swiss Lorenz Erni, said in a statement: 'President Blatter was disappointed the ethics committee did not follow the code of ethics and disciplinary code, both of which provide for an opportunity to be heard. Further, the ethics committee based its decision on a misunderstanding of the actions of the attorney general in Switzerland, which has opened an investigation but brought no charges against the president.

'In fact, the prosecutors will be obliged by law to dismiss the case if their investigation, barely two weeks old, does not establish sufficient evidence. He looks forward to the opportunity to present evidence that will demonstrate that he did not engage in any misconduct, criminal or otherwise.'

Platini said: 'I will stop at nothing to ensure the truth is known.

'Nobody should be in any doubt as to my determination to achieve that objective. I reject all the allegations that have been made against me, which are based on mere semblances and are astonishingly vague.'

Chung's six-year ban follows inducements made during the 2022 World Cup bid and Valcke was already suspended following his alleged involvement in a World Cup ticket scheme which brought huge personal profits.
