Thumbs up High Caste Professor Jailed For Smacking Rude Sinkie Cabbie! Happy?

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

SINGAPORE: For assaulting a taxi driver while drunk on Christmas Day in 2013, an assistant law professor from the National University of Singapore (NUS) was sentenced to four months in jail on Friday (Jun 26).

Sundram Peter Soosay, 43, was also ordered to pay the cabby, Mr Sun Chuan Hua, compensation of S$1,500.

Soosay was convicted last month after a trial and in sentencing him this afternoon, District Judge Victor Yeo said violence against public transport workers should not be tolerated.

The judge called the defence’s arguments “fanciful and contrived” and said he found the Soosay’s testimony to be “riddled with hindsight reasoning, convenient conjecture and hypothesis”.

“The accused has shown no sign of remorse,” he added.

He said an aggravating factor was Soosay’s state of intoxication on the day of the attack.

The judge also noted the offender’s “lackadaisical attitude towards compensation”. Defence lawyer Amarjit Singh told the court his client wanted to make compensation, but not on Friday. The judge said there has been “ample time since judgment” to make compensation.

Mr Singh said his client would be appealing against the decision. Soosay’s bail has been increased from S$15,000 to S$20,000.

The attack in the early hours of Dec 25, 2013, left Mr Sun bloodied and in need of multiple stitches. Soosay had vomitted in the taxi and tried to walk away without paying the fare after alighting near King Albert Park. Mr Sun chased after him and the passenger handed over a S$50 note, but attacked the cabby when he returned to his taxi to get change.

Mr Sun suffered laceration wounds on his eyebrow and forehead, as well as bruises and abrasions to the elbow, forearm and knees.

He needed 17 days of medical leave and incurred medical costs of S$226.20 after subsidies.

Mr Sun is no longer willing to take intoxicated passengers, the court heard.

Dressed in a blue shirt and suit, Soosay looked dejected as his sentence was read out.
