SINGAPORE: Two suspects involved in a shooting incident near Shangri-La Hotel on Sunday (May 31) were charged in court on Monday (Jun 1). Each faces one count of heroin trafficking.

Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin, 26, is accused of possessing three packets of powdery substances believed to contain heroin for the purpose of trafficking. They weighed about nine grammes.

Muhammad Syahid told the court he wished to engage a lawyer. He was remanded for a week and could be taken out for investigations. The prosecution said he might be charged with other offences.

Mohamed Ismail, 31, faces the same charge. As he was injured in the incident, he was charged in the Singapore General Hospital via video link. He, too, will be remanded for a week.

He was ordered to be remanded in the hospital, and on discharge in the Police Cantonment Complex.

The two men were arrested at about 4.30am on Sunday. They were in a car with 34-year-old Mohamed Taufik Zahar when they were stopped at a police checkpoint near Shangri-La Hotel where a high-level security summit was taking place.

Mohamed Taufik, the driver, suddenly accelerated and crashed the car through police barricades, endangering the lives of the officers. Police opened fire at the vehicle, which stopped at the junction of Orange Grove Road and Anderson Road. Taufik was pronounced dead at the scene. A bag believed to contain drugs was found in the vehicle.

The Shangri-La Dialogue - which was attended by defence ministers and military chiefs from around the world - was not affected by the incident.

The next mention of the case will be on Jun 8. If convicted, Mohamed Ismail and Muhammad Syahid face up to 20 years' jail and 15 strokes of the cane.
