GOVT'S CPF ADVISORY PANEL TO TAKE CREDIT FOR THE CHANGES PUSHED FOR BY ROY NGERNG

After the CPF issue was thrust into the mainstream by blogger Roy Ngerng, it has been a hot topic of discussion and the government has finally recognised that it is an issue which will affect the results of the next election.

To respond to the growing public awareness and frustration with the system, the government set up a CPF Advisory Panel which has been going around taking feedback on the CPF issue and it is set to submit its recommendations by February this year.

Chairing the panel is Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, the President of NUS.

Some of the concerns that Prof Tan highlighted that Singaporeans have with the CPF is that there is a lack of flexibility and insufficient funds.

Interestingly, the Mainstream media has covered this "discovery" as if it was brought up solely through the focus group discussions help by the CPF Panel.

In fact, Blogger Roy Ngerng and many other Singaporeans at numerous CPF protests brought up such concerns and made them very clear in their social media postings and protest speeches.

It seems that the government simply doesn't listed to such individuals who have gone out of their way to make their views clear.

Instead, they must spend taxpayer money to form a panel, organise feedback sessions and make it look like they are reaching out the people when in fact, they could have just listened to those spoke up.

While it was blogger Roy Ngerng who helped to make the CPF issue a mainstream topic of discussion, the govt refuses to acknowledge his part and the PM is pushing ahead with pursuing Mr Ngerng in court for speaking up.

Indeed, it does seem like a big wayang on the part of the government as even after 3 months, the advisory panel has just consulted 350 residents

Neverheless, the chairman of the panel has said that the group discussions are important and they help the panel plan possible tweaks to the CPF system.
Some of the other suggestions made include having an option for lower monthly payouts and a larger lump sum withdrawal at 55.

Another concern raised was the slight discrimination that hte CPF system had against women as typically, women spend less time in their life in formal work with CPF contributions. This results in them having fewer savings in CPF.

While it is good that the government wants to change the CPF, the big show and dance that they are putting on makes you wonder they are wasting time and money to find out what the vocal citizens have been telling them all along.

What do you think?
