TITLE: Two homes raided for selling e-cigarettes POSTED: 12 Dec 2014 09:59 URL: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/...r/1525794.html Seized transaction records reveal that the sellers had engaged in e-cigarette sales totalling more than S$90,000, according to the Health Sciences Authority. SINGAPORE: Two homes were raided by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) after two men were found selling electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) from the residences, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on Friday (Dec 12). The two residences, at Yishun Street 81 and Seletar Hills Estate, were raided in an operation on Thursday. Transaction records seized revealed that the sellers had engaged in e-cigarette sales totalling more than S$90,000, HSA said. The two suspects - Singaporean males aged 33 and 38 - were business partners who had purchased the prohibited products from overseas suppliers to sell via an e-commerce website, which has been shut down by HSA. The suspects are currently assisting with investigations, HSA said. Since 2011, eight people have been prosecuted for selling e-cigarettes. The stiffest penalty meted out so far was S$64,500 for the illegal sales of e-cigarettes. The raid is part of ongoing efforts by HSA to deter the illegal peddling of e-cigarettes in Singapore. In a public advisory issued on Friday, HSA said it is an offence under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sales) Act to import, distribute or sell e-cigarettes, e-pipes, and e-cigars. The penalty is a fine of up to S$5,000 for the first offence and a fine of up to S$10,000 for a second or subsequent offence. Members of the public who have information on the illegal importation, distribution or sales of e-cigarettes are encouraged to call HSA’s Tobacco Regulation Branch at 6684-2036 or 6684-2037 during office hours (9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday). - CNA/cy Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
