The Ministry of Health explained today a new initiative that is expected to help free up some extra beds in acute care hospitals.

MOH explained that there will be patient discharge lounges whereby patients waiting to be discharged will be moved from their beds and into a lounge room with couches and chairs so that their beds can be used for someone else.

The move is supposed to help ease the bed crunch especially as Singapore's ageing population puts more stress on the healthcare system.

The lounge rooms are designed for patients to wait in while their documents or medication is prepared. They can also stay there while waiting for family to pick them up.
The new facilities are already being used in NUH, Changi General and Khoo Teck Puat hospitals.

While it may not seem like much of a change, for example, NUH sees over 150 new admissions and discharges everyday and while on average the process takes 1.5 hours per patient, the time can be quite long if family members delay or are unable to pick up their relatives straight away.

If these patients are all moved to a discharge lounge, their beds can start to be used sooner for the next patients.

The lounges will also be set up in other public hospitals over the rest of the year to help free up more beds.
