MERS virus didn’t spread in the US thankfully. But it was not the only virus to search for targets in the US. Another and deadlier virus is set to attack United States in the coming weeks.

Experts are of the opinion that the instances of pig virus will skyrocket in the coming months. They are of the opinion that the number of pigs lost to the virus will not be in thousands or hundreds of thousands but in million.

They peg the number of pigs expected to be lost due to the raging pig virus at upwards of 2.5 million in the next one year alone.

This has created sort of panic among veterinary specialists. Iowa-based company Harrisvaccines has come out with a vaccine that was approved by USDA earlier this week. But a fellow official of the company Joel Harris said that there were questions about its effectiveness during winter. While talking about the vaccine’s impact in winters he said, “There could be situations where the virus could overwhelm the immunity of the herd”.

Experts say that the reason PEDv spread has slowed in recent weeks is due to the fact that it is summer time. It thrives in cold and damp conditions.

But the good thing about the virus is the fact that it does not threaten humans or food safety, according to the USDA. “There is still plenty of disease out there and it will be back with a vengeance in the fall” says, Eric Neumann, a renowned veterinarian.
