Qatar on 14 May 2014 announced about its decision to abolish it controversial sponsorship system for foreign workers. The sponsorship system (Kafala system) will be replaced with a system based on employment contracts as part of a package of labour reforms.
Under the new system, the foreign workers will not have to obtain their employer’s consent before leaving the country as is prevalent at present.
Now this process will be replaced with an automated system through the ministry of interior. Under this automated system, the exit permit will be granted to an employee after a 72-hour grace period prior to departure.
Background
The sponsor system for the foreign workers practiced by Qatar has been under international criticism by the human rights activists on account of its unfair treatment to the foreign workers.
