“Breakfast Network” cannot operate on other Internet platforms: MDA
An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:
Looks like PAP is really damn pissed off with netizens. The Media Development Authority (MDA) says socio-political commentary website “Breakfast Network”, which has gone offline over non-registration, cannot operate on other Internet platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. SINGAPORE: The Media Development Authority (MDA) says socio-political commentary website “Breakfast Network”, which has gone offline over non-registration, cannot operate on other Internet platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. In comments issued on Friday afternoon, an MDA spokesperson said doing so would contravene its registration requirements. MDA said it had required www.breakfastnetwork.sg, operated by Breakfast Network Pte Ltd, to register under the Broadcasting (Class Licence) Notification, as it had assessed that as a corporate entity providing political commentary and news, it could be susceptible to foreign funding. On December 10, it said it would require that the website cease its online service as its owners had decided not to submit its registration form. MDA also refuted the claim and reports that it required the website’s volunteer contributors to be named. Its spokesperson said: "Bertha Henson's 10 December Facebook post indicated that MDA required the site's volunteer contributors to be named. This was picked up in various news reports. This is false." "MDA had replied to Ms Henson on 6 December that pro-bono editorial team members should be listed in the form if they are responsible for and/or involved in the provision, management and/or operation of the website. At no point did MDA state that volunteer contributors need to be listed.” MDA reiterated that the content of “Breakfast Network” is not the issue. Rather, it is the mode of operation, which could mean a greater possibility for foreign influence. It said the registration requirement seeks to uphold the principle that politics must remain a matter for Singapore and Singaporeans alone. The principle is a long-standing one, and there is no departure from its Internet regulatory framework, said MDA. - CNA/nd Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
