TOMS RIVER — You’re minding your own business, sitting at your home computer.

Suddenly, a pop-up appears – with the logo of the FBI – warning that you’re guilty of illegal music downloads, or even trafficking in child pornography. Your computer locks up.

The message also instructs you to pay a fine with a gift card of money order – or risk being arrested. In return, your computer will be unlocked, the message says.

You’re the victim of a viral new scourge, called “Ransomware,” according to authorities.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has fielded a handful of calls about the locked computers, said Al Della Fave, the prosecutor’s spokesman.

“Ransomware” creates a pop-up window or webpage – and completely locks up the computer, Della Fave said. And hackers who create the bugs are often a step ahead of anti-virus programmers, he added.

“Although anti-virus companies are working to prevent this type of activity, unfortunately computer criminals are always updating their tactics and inventing ways to circumvent the computer industry’s anti-virus programs,” Della Fave said.

The malware is sophisticated enough that most consumers would have to bring their infected computer to a repair store, authorities said.

Jason Disbrow, owner of the Bayville-based J.R.D. Tech, said he repairs a handful of computers each week with the FBI-themed scam software. Most of the bugs function similarly to viruses that have appeared for years - but the official-looking presentation and message is a new method to scam people, he said. There's even one variant that activates your webcam, takes your picture and places it next to the extortion threat, he added.

"We've seen quite a bit of it lately," Disbrow said. "It's just trying to scare you - to get your money."

Several waves of the scam have popped up regionally around the world. Symantec, an anti-virus software company, has called the malware the “new Nigerian email scam,” due to how widespread it is – and said the viruses have spread from Eastern Europe to Western Europe, and then the U.S. and Canada, over the last year. The Reveton variety of the virus was detected in 500,000 computers last year – and the estimate is that 2.9 percent of victims have been extorted of an estimated $5 million, the company said last year.

Last July, the Newark office of the FBI warned that the Reveton virus was popping up in the region, asking victims to pay $100 to the U.S. Department of Justice using a prepaid gift cards. Last September, the agency’s Knoxville office warned computer users in eastern Tennessee that the Reveton variety of the malware had appeared there.

Just a few key precautions will help decrease the chances of being a victim, Disbrow said.

"Keep all your software up to date," the computer expert said. "And don't give anybody money."
