Thumbs up Fifth Estate : Dangers of govt secrecy...

An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:

When you give the man a mask, he will tell you the truth....

The level of democracy of a country can be measured by the number of anonymous critics you see online. In Finland and Denmark all most all the political bloggers are not anonymous. But in China and Singapore most of them are anonymous. Govt has great powers but does its power to hide the truth? Climate of fear tells you what kind of govt you're dealing with. Those that use secrecy and propaganda to protect its power so that a few elites can benefit from it ...and those who believe power really belongs to the people.

Come 5 Nov 2013, the cyber security the PAP govt invested over the years will be put to the test primarily because the PAP govt forced down Internet regulation that was opposed by majority of netizens and even major corporations.

Quote:
Called the Asian Internet Coalition (AIC), the group — consisting of eBay, Facebook, Google, Salesforce and Yahoo! — wrote a letter to Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim in mid-June expressing their views on the new licensing framework, which so far affects a news site operated by Yahoo! Singapore.

"The (AIC) strongly believes in the potential of Internet-enabled communications to benefit society, the economy and citizens," the coalition's executive director John Ure wrote. "However, this new regulation — and the regulatory trend that this may be indicative of — could unintentionally hamper Singapore's ability to continue to drive innovation, develop key industries in the technology space and attract investment in this key sector."

Because the PAP govt shows that it is willing to hamper Singapore's ability and harm the interest of the people in order to maintain its power and dominance over the people, many do not see the actions of Anon as a "war on Singapore" but rather a "war on Singapore government" which is the semi authoritarian PAP government.

While unthinking, sometimes mindless, supporters of the regime easily succumb to propaganda on state controlled media that this is an "attack on the people of Singapore" or "attack on Singapore", well informed Singaporeans will know that the actions of the Anon Group is caused by unpopular actions of the PAP that has potentially harmed the interest of Singaporeans. Taking down govt websites is a last resort as the PAP govt has refused to listen to the voice of reason and alter its course for the good of Singaporeans. Singaporeans who have spent so much time and effort to appeal to the govt to come to its senses on Internet regulation do not wish for this outcome. But unfortunately the PAP govt has ignored the voice of reason on this issue.

Whether people stand with or against the govt depends on whether the govt is standing with them or against them. Very often, the PAP govt, with its close links to big govt linked businesses (GLCs), appears to downgrade the people's interests to a lower priority. It has to be constantly reminded to do what is right for the people and not always to depend on propaganda, unfair elections with unlevel playing fields and a climate of fear to hold power. Except for the badly brainwashed diehard regime supporters, everyone will eventually have the eyes to see and understand what is going on ....and the truth will eventually prevail.
