Secondary school students arrested for illegal betting activities

Monday, Jun 10, 2013

SINGAPORE - An 18-year-old teen and four secondary school students, aged between 14 and 18, have been arrested in connection with illegal betting and illegal bookmaking.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the teen and one of the students, aged 17, were involved as bookmakers by accepting bets through an illegal football betting website.

The remaining three suspects were involved in placing bets with illegal bookmakers. Investigations are ongoing.

Under the Betting Act, any person who bets or wagers with a bookmaker can be fined up to $5,000 or sentenced to prison for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.

Anybody who acts as a bookmaker can be fined up to $200,000, and can also be sentenced to prison for a term not exceeding five years.

The police said that they take a serious view of illegal bookmakers who target youths, due to the dangers and addictive nature of gambling.

They also stressed that anyone who engages in illegal gambling activities will have to face serious consequences regardless of their age and reminded parents to monitor their children's activities during the school holidays.
