Need Advice - Acting as Guarantor

hi bros, one of my close PRC friend ask me to act as her guarantor for her older sister (30s) to come to Singapore on a travel visa for like 30 days.

Need some advice if this is safe to proceed. She is willing to fork out the deposit amount (is it $1k ?), if there is a need for a deposit.

I'm just concerned if there are any legal/criminal complications to myself if the sister decided to overstay etc
also, the other concern if she is caught doing something she is not supposed to do (besides travel and holidays), any legal complication for the guarantor ?

Should anything happen..the most for her is being send back & start new life in her motherland.. where you will have problem starting new life as you are stuck in singapore.

hi style.whist,irregardless on whether a deposit is needed or wat r the legal complications involved if she was caught doing something illegal, why do u need 2 help her be a guarantor ?

Ask me to get her to come here by apply visa for her ( just $20 needed ) my thinking $20 where such good thing ? If really true I think half of prc Mei Mei will rush here

Whenever any "friend" asks you for a favour which involves putting your money, your reputation, or both, on the line, ask yourself a simple question..."why are they asking me to do this?".

Then ask yourself another question if you feel you should oblige and help and that is... "why do I feel like helping?".

To be a guarantor means u are willing to take over all the liablities and responsibiles if the debtor defaults.

2 simple things to ask:

1. What is the likelyhood the person defaults?
2. Are u financially capable to take over all the liabilites?

If yes, then go ahead.

Isn't guarantor only liability will be forfeit of the deposit just as domestic maid?

You have to weigh the consequence
If she just an acquaintance, why bother,
If not, and she really into pure tourism, then no harm...
But the fact is she is using TS as a passport to gain entry to FL...

I understand most of the replies are basically saying 'use common sense, don't do it', but I'm really curious to do some fact finding as to what actually happened to people in the past - any past precedent on people who got harmed/screwed up because he or she was acting as a guarantor ? What happened ?

If the only liability involves just a forfeiture of the deposit, then it is a non-issue because the deposit is paid up-front. The issue then becomes other legal/criminal liability, which I would like to pose the same question : what happened in the past ?

Again, asking these questions does not mean I am not heeding any warnings here, or that I was inclining to do it, or that I am neglecting that something did happen to people in the past, but again the same question : what had happened in the past ?

Personally, it's equally important for me to understand the reasons why I don't do something as much as the reasons why I do something.

If you do agree, is it an emotional decision or a rational one?

If you don't agree what do you have to lose?.... a good friend who you think will stand by your side through thick and thin or a pussy that's nice and juicy?

I'm also assuming that you know pretty much nothing about the person you're contemplating guaranteeing whereas in her case, it's a simple matter of "blood is thicker than water". She's risking your good name and your $$$ for the sake of her sister. I wouldn't want to put that burden on any of my friends. It would be most unfair to them.

I would NEVER act as guarantor for someone I did not know. It's a crazy and idiotic thing to do.

having a gurantor endorsed on the papers would greatly help their route/ticket 2 tis great small red dot.
the existence of a gurantor would eliminate additional time wasting & any deposit @ their country.
