Sex diseases up in S'pore
More young Singaporeans in their 20s or 30s are being infected.
The number has risen from about 11,000 in 2006 to 12,300 in 2008, with gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and syphilis being the three main STIs. CASES of Sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) are rising in Singapore, with more young Singaporeans being infected, said Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan. The number has risen from about 11,000 in 2006 to 12,300 in 2008, with gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and syphilis being the three main STIs. Mr Khaw said Singapore citizens accounted for about 62 per cent of the number of infections, one-third of which were new cases, with two-thirds as follow-up cases. And 70 per cent of the cases were young adults, in their twenties or thirties. For cases below 20, two-thirds were female, while for those older than 20, two-thirds were male. In his reply to questions from MP Ellen Lee (Sembawang GRC) in Parliament, Mr Khaw said in his written response that the overall rate of notifications per 100,000 population has remained quite stable, increasing only marginally from 250 in 2006 to 254 in 2008. 'However, while the rates have been relatively stable over the past three years, they are at a higher level than before,' he said. 'The overall rate of notifications per 100,000 population has increased about one and a half times from 155 in 2000 to 254 in 2008.' 'Those aged between 10 and 39 years accounted for the largest increases in STI notification rates. For those in their twenties and thirties, the rate per 100,000 population has increased by 67 per cent, from 270 in 2000 to 451 in 2008. For those below 20, the rate is especially alarming, having more than doubled from 61 per 100,000 population in 2000 to 133 in 2008.' Mr Khaw said the Ministry of Health has worked with several organisations to put in place programmes to address the rising trend of STIs among youths. The topic on STIs is included in the science syllabus and MOE has made it mandatory for schools to implement sexuality education. The Health Promotion Board also conducts regular programmes for parents in work places, schools and community venues offering them information and tips on how to broach and discuss sexuality issues, including STIs, with their children. The safe sex messages in HPB's educational campaigns for HIV also apply to the prevention of STIs in general. |

Re: Sex diseases up in S'pore
Maybe gov should legalize some of those "Health Center" and make the girl go for regular check up. With more legalize choices, the rate of guys getting sex diseases might drop oso. At least it's more safe compare to those illegal trade although not 100% la.

That is difficulty, and almost impossible for gov to stop all the illegal sex trades. I think they should put more fund for education on the safe sex part, and teach the proper way of protection.

Re: Sex diseases up in S'pore
I read the news in Shin Min Daily on 14 Jan 2010 about a 23 yo S'porean guy who's application to study overseas at a world-renowed University was rejected because he was tested HIV+ during the required medical test.
He mentioned that he had started cheonging at the age of 16yrs old and has all along engaged in protected sex with his various sex partners and that is why he thought he would NEVER be tested positive for HIV and is also puzzled on how he get it. |

Also condoms are safer sex...NOT perfectly safe. There is still risk, albeit very minimal but still exists a risk. Good health to everyone. Cheers, BM

Perhaps, if there is self regulation, they might just close one eye. For example, OKT and independent FL can volunteer to do regular screening. It is good for everyone. |

I think the gov should allow any girl to be a WL as long as she follows certain rules, eg : o No soliciting in public o No working near schools or near children areas o Regular healthchecks o No underaged sex o Registered with MOH/MOM, and perhaps, a member of a Leisure Workers Union where they can seek help and protection. The unions can arrange and subsidise health checks, as well as provide training ( BJ lessons, anyone ? ). o Recognized as a valid occupation and pay income taxes just like the the rest of us. Girls who wanna FL will do so anyway, except that they are doing it outside the system that is designed to keep them and their customers safer. It's better that they be part of the system.

Maybe they should start providing live action on how to have safer sex which allow the youngster to have a clearer picture on what is going on. Action speak louder than words. |

Re: Sex diseases up in S'pore
Bro, GL is fine, but GL is too small, and too restricted. Like you said, many bros who are married and attached will find it very malu if they were to bump into someone they know in GL.
What I have suggested would be something like the HK system, in which the girls can operate almost everywhere. So its not physically in one place, but due to regulation, the girls will still turn up for any checkups and appts and the gov can keep taps on them. You could be walking around in a posh shopping district or a pasar malam place, and just a few steps away is a discreet fuck shop with a handful of girls. No worries if you bump into friends or relatives on the way : just say your are window shopping. Of course the HK system also has silly aspects, such as requiring girls to be in a single unit, so its also not perfect. A blend of both systems (HK and SG) would be better. FLs can then be regulated. In exchange for registration, they might get better protection and medical benefits, and they won't have to be illegal anymore. Quote:
