Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Understanding the language of self-respect
============================= Come holiday season and I receive plenty of congratulatory cards – written only in English – from companies, organizations and businesses. No Vietnamese, only English. Then it happens again with invitation cards to press conferences, opening ceremonies and formal parties. Yet again, I confront this phenomenon as I visit several restaurants and hotels to find menus and descriptions written only in English. But wait. Some cards do contain Vietnamese, but so often it’s written in small letters and put in a very modest, unassuming spot. What does this mean? That the organizers of the events feel embarrassed using Vietnamese? For those who subscribe to Viettel land phones, it might be frustrating to hear the “not so fluent” English speaking voices announcing the reasons why the users’ phones were cut. The story is the same with the dong, our national currency. Visit some language centers and international schools, clothing stores, or souvenir shops. The owners post prices only in US dollars. I’ve been to some duty-free shops in some countries and find that they only accept payment in their own currency. In Vietnam, some duty-free shops even ask that customers must pay them in American dollars. Here’s the lesson: if we don’t respect our national language, who else will? Some Vietnamese even find that it’s an honor to receive messages and cards in English. Throughout our history, Vietnam has always been able to keep its own, distinctive culture and there’s no reason why we should not be proud of using our national language. I am not saying that a card written in English would lead to losing the authenticity of this country. But just think: if even the educated class of this country feels “more honored” using English, what can we ask from those girls who line up hoping to get married to foreigners? It’s a matter of self-respect. By Huynh Ngoc Chenh
