To begin with, the primary aim of bodybuilding was never to attract the opposite sex. Don’t mix up “training to look good and healthy” (the category most men fall into) and “bodybuilding”. IMHO, like any other sport, passion is the underlying reason. Roger Federer plays tennis not because he wants to attract the ladies but because he’s really passionate about it. I do not deny narcissism can be a reason for a person’s passion for bodybuilding. You played basketball for the first time, and you realised you love this sport. Similarly, your cousin took you to the gym for the first time, and somewhat just fell in love with pumping iron. Seriously, passion is unexplainable.

Nonetheless, whatever the reason for this passion is of secondary importance. The thing to note is the amount of time and dedication those elite bodybuilders are willing to sacrifice for their passion. At least these people have something which they are truly passionate about, and they are prepared to devote their lives to it. In other fields, we witness athletes, martial art practitioners, musicians, political activists and so forth dedicate their lives to something which they are highly passionate about. Seriously, I really take my hat off such people and at times envy them. Life becomes truly meaningful only when you are truly passionate about something. How many people living on this earth have found something they are really passionate about, and are pursuing it? Most people are just passing their lives day by day, without knowing what they really want in life.

Beyond those “gleaming ripped muscles” I see years of dedication, hard work, and discipline in the weight room which is something for me to learn from. “Throwing light insults their [bodybuilders’] way that suggests even the slightest imperfections in them” to unravel a “a hideous orc-like creature who will stoop to anything, insults, coercion what-have-you in an attempt beat u into submission” – why would you want to do that? To make yourself feel better by putting others down? C’mon...

i do agree with you with regards to bro mysterious bashing of what seems like the whole bodybuilding community. i'm am quite sure that he is directing those insults at one particular individual, and in the process of doing so, lead to a generalization of bodybuilders from his personal perception from the people around him.

harsh words from bro mysterious with regards to defining the reasons behind what drives the bodybuilders to do what they do. but in reality, there is always some form of narcissism or self adoration factor involved. which was the main driving force, we will never know.

let's just take a few examples, say swarchenegger who came from a humble background, touched weights, knew he was good at it, pursued it, and made it big. we can safely say he was driven by the desire to lead a better life through bodybuilding. but think about it, who doesn't want to look and feel good about themselves? we are all subjected to this. for him, he got the best out of both worlds.

tiger woods is a great golf player. was exposed to golf at a very young age, got good at it, made it big. now, is his 'passion' for golf purely for the game itself or was it because he knew he was good at it? frankly speaking, we will never know.

like you said, the passion that athletes, martial art practitioners, musicians and political activists are definitely admirable. that act itself is, but what's the reason behind it is equally important. just like that war, was it an act of making the world a safer place or was there some other agenda? sad thing is now we know what really happened.
