for transportation, try asking friends around for a deal which is kinda cost saving. i've got a friend's friend who owe finance company some monies and mortgage the honda civic there. i've settle for him the owe amount and driving his car for free till he pay me off the money. simple calculation, the amount settling for him is 150k, and he pay me in 15 monthly installments. i get to drive the car for free and he save up onto the 15% interest every month. is a win win situation.

Chiangmai, Korak, Hua Hin etc etc... will be a better alternative for a "retirement" lifestyle......

- Relax - fresher air
- Nice natural surrounding - cheap golfs, fishing ground, many greens, cycle around wif comfort etc...
- more reasonable cost of living

We dont need the lime light n convenient of big shopping complexes, bath houses, go go bars, discos, pubs etc.......

We need to focus on our objectives n priorities correctly....Bangkok may be our first place of visit in LOS but certainly that NOT the ideal city for a real retirement.....

Unless the retirement objectives in to jump into a more exciting life than Hawaii ?????
Agreed, I rather consider Lampang, Korat, Trang, Mai Sai, Ubon Thani, etc... and keep BKK as the place to visit.....

....and sometime, Danok, Hatyai for old time cock stand reasons.....

Legally the car doesn't belong to you right? I heard some people do this kind of arrangements before but dunno if anyone got scammed or not.

Indianmagicoil,

Scam or not, I don't know how people can drive in Bangkok? Not only the traffic is congested, but the stress level will be morbidly high due to cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles and mopeds cutting you off and going into your lanes without signals! If I drove in Bangkok, I would get into fights everyday, because I hate when someone cut me off and then drive slow! Worst of all, no one obeys traffic signals or lane markers! Also, as a foreigner, if you get into accidents, most likely it's your fault and police targets foreigners for traffic fines to supplement their incomes! So BTS, MRT, Taxis and waliking for me!

so far i've been driving that for the past 4months and everything's still alright. payments were prompt and i also did confirm insurance able to claim if the car was theft.

i dunno how's traffic in the states, but as compare to bkk and sgp, the road user are much more friendly there. boys, ever heard cars hones non stop in bkk??? once the front of yr car out on next lane, they'll giving way unlike cars in sgp. they'll hone you non-stop or even pointing the center finger at u. everything there is fine despite the jam....

Driving in Thailand is not that bad, as I thought many many moons ago. Then I sweared that I would not, dare not drive in BKK.

After having driven in various parts of Thailand, really not so bad after all. Sure there will be some bad hats here and there. In general, one MUST understand the other drivers' conditions, also the road conditions. Just be considerate that we drive a much more manoeuvrable vehicle. The Thais really uses their vehicle to the maximum, carrying lots of goods stacked 10 feet high on their pick up. They need a living, so just go around them on the left them to overtake.... don't bother waiting for him to move to the left for you.... and you will be fine driving in Thailand

choke dee mak mak....

so far have not seen any center finger in LOS, during my drives....

555... u r one hot tempered dude! You remind me of me! Several times nearly got into fights here in Sinkieland. But now mellow with age, driving in the middle lane. When I drive in BKK I've hardwired myself to the fact that no point getting all hot & flustered under the collar when there is not a darn thing u can do when stuck in Krungthep's infamous jams. Jai yen yen is the way to go there.

Well good for yah tat your friend's friend is trustworthy. Sad to say that drivers in Bangkok are slowly becoming like Sinkieland i.e. not giving way when signal. It was the same in KL maybe 10 years ago (KLites plz confirm) that traffic though chaotic people still gave way.

Hello (etct88, indianmagicoil and ass-cargot),

I agree with you folks, drivers in Bangkok seldom gets mad at the drivers who cut into their lanes abruptly, they don't honk their horns or give them the Finger! But in US, especially cities like Los Angeles, Houston or New York, road rage is common and people do get killed or injured. In Honolulu, road rage is common but no one gets killed but you'll see lots of fists fights on the road! Also, in Bangkok, they drive on the wrong side of the road compared to US. So, if I drove in Bangkok, I'll get into accidents and gets beaten up by Thai drivers! In Honolulu, I had old ladies, cute girls and old farts giving me the finger because of my obnoxious driving habit.

I hope next year we can meet over dinner, my treat!

Its a fact not theory... off-duty policemen, armed forces dudes, rich brats and the Thai mafia all tote guns. Thai's "mai bpen rai" and "greng jai" attitudes also helps diffuse tensions in an otherwise mad city!

Wah... bro u drive all the way north? 555... furthest I drove was from Penang to Spore. Just curious how long it takes for u?

No problem, if all goes well, I should have a trip to BKK in Dec.

Ooop, facts not theory Think I remember some cases of rich brat shooting like cowboys.......

Singapore to Penang, 7 hours. Was with boss, a bit stressful, so dove a little faster than usual. Between 120 -150 kph.

Penang to Hatyai - no big deal

Hatyai to BKK -

1st trip with T ruk - left at 5.30am arrive BKK 6pm, reached hotel 9pm..... knn traffic jam. Speed was 110-130 kph. Many stops and very relaxed

Then BKK to Lampang - left at 10pm arrive at 5pm........

Lampang to Chonburi (return) left at 11am, arrive 6pm had time to do some marketing for dinner with friends.

Chonburi to Hatyai - this was was a bit stressful, left at 9am, made a mistake stop by at Hua Hin, some sightseeing. Had to drive thru the night and arrived Hatyai at 11pm.... shouldn't have drive in the night, lucky no stones thrown at me.......

2nd trip, alone. Left Hatyai at 7am, arrive Rangsit 6pm, met a friend, had dinner and in bed by 10pm...... room was a bit scary, alone... tui!

return trip was in broad daylight all the way.

Arrived Hatyai, T ruk jealous like .... ha ha ha. (for nothing, I went on a soul searching trip, see monk, zero cheong, zero acohol, super dry trip, didi very good boy)

In my opinion, there must be more than just BKK for retirement. The pace is so acceptable. Maybe for now the grass look greener....... and fresh too

ps, seems like something may brew up in the next 2 weeks. The PM better watch out!

I can remember rich brat shot cop at disco happen like 3 years ago? Speaking of brats... watched local news just after Songkrang this year and shows drunk youths in the provinces beating up people in broad daylight. Understand that it happens in most places every year when old scores are settled between rival groups.

Yeah its true about thieves who will throw stones at your windscreen when driving on deserted highways at night (those planning to drive in Thailand take note!) Reading your road trip is making me car sick man! You must love driving and guessing you have a nice comfortable car?

ps, seems like something may brew up in the next 2 weeks. The PM better watch out!
Alamak! Me going back in 2 weeks! Hope dun hijack airport b4 I clear immigration & into the arms of my tilak! God I miss her bad...

My car is 5 years old and clocked 270,000km liao.... so as the car sale man said..... scrap scrap scrap!

Try to get in before he leaves for an official trip to usa.... hee hee....

Then you can do a Tony Stark....... choke dee.

If U think Thai driving are atrocious wait till go China. The Chinese drivers r much worse....they drove as if it the road is their country side farm land..... But yet, accidents or fist fights like the Thai r rare. They r veri skillful drivers but most of all similar to Thai they r veri forgiving. Many give n takes which u ll never find in the West....

No rules r right all the times, similarly no wrongs all the time if they do not follow the rules either.Everyone bent it someday. Just hv to accept each other faults to avoid an accident....That's Asia bro.....U hv to adopt that attitute if u r here for long haul.....Esp traffic rules can be bent to suit the situation......
