For the Visa..I got the letter from shanghai side and got double entry visa for 90days valid and each is 60 days stay..it all depend on the paper you submit..
best if you can get a company in shanghai to provide detail that you are needed there for certain work...

Here's my China Visa application by travel agents research FR.
An An Travel (People's Park Center Basement) $45 <--Semi Rip Off Five Star Travel (People's Park Center Basement) $60 <--Rip Off Formosa (People's Park Center Basement) $55 <--Rip Off Sing Travel (People's Park Center 3rd Floor) $70 <--Rip Off People's Park Center travel agents really suck. Pity those unsuspecting uncles and aunties going on China tour during this period and let these travel agents rip them off. Please spread the word! Market rate is only $35 if you book air tickets with the travel agent. $40 if you book your own air tickets. Finally got my double entry visa done at another building near PPC. $55 only. Single entry is $40. $5 less if you book air tickets with them. Takes 4 working days to receive your visa excluding the day you submitted your documents to travel agent. Special thanks to bro bonk88 and unfit.

Since you guys traveled frequently to China, simply get an address of your friends' address with a return air ticket and you are almost there. I was able to get double entry valid for 3 months with each entry lasting 90 days and it happened just last week.
Just be sure that your chinese friend has a valid address and a contactable number. They might or might not call, do try to give them a real contact. As for ABTC, you won't be in time if you apply now as China has a backlog of applications waiting to be cleared, by the time you're cleared you would be better off applying for the visa yourself. But in long terms, you might want a ABTC as it is really useful with each stay lasting 60 days in China. Getting this card is not difficult nor easy, you just need the right documents. After two months, I am still waiting to be cleared by China  For busy people, call up the travel agencies, they would be glad to help you.

For those who want to apply visa yourself if u want to save some money. Here is how.....
Take bus No 111 or 132 bus stop in front of British Embassy before 830am. weekday only up till 1130 am ( If car park at Tanglin Shopping) Follow the queue along the bending stair as you enter. Be prepare to print application form in addvance from the China Embassy Website, fill up form together with photo, your air ticket confirmation and your hotel also. When u reach the reception u will have a queue no. Took me less than I hour to process. Normal process $25 single entry. I paid $35 for double entry because I go to Shenzhen first then to Hongkong and back to Shenzhen. So 2 shots just like booking a Fl 4 days later (normal) collection same time but do not follow the same Q as the first. Go right up to the level there is another Q . Collection takes longer time than apply. When your turn pay up your fees, then another Q emerge, u join this Q for your passport back. Took me about 1 and half hr. If u have the time, its a piece of cake
