Take for example, some taxi driver refused to use the metre when they picked up passenger in JB regardless of sporean or msian because they could have been overtip by sporean before and this could have made them to become more greedy by quoting high taxi fare than normal. Therefore if less sporean comes in and their business affected is also teaching them a good lesson so that they don't anyhow raised market price of goods and services in the future. Imagine if toll charges are not increased and the VEP not implemented, where to get the funds to maintain the CIQ facilities & roads as well as the Eastern Dispersal Link Highway ??? It is impossible for the msia govt to impose toll charge at the EDL highway and make johorian pay for it rite ? Remember msia foreign reserve is already in deficit and if the govt do not have sufficient revenue, then how to upkeep the infracstructure in the country ? Also don't forget msia will be implementing the Goods & Services Tax (GST) 6% in April 2015, by then everything will become more costly. If johor cost of living keep rising because of too much investment by sporean/foreigner, then with the GST comes in, the rakyat will suffer very badly financially. Therefore increasing the Toll and VEP for both countries is one good way to reduce investment by sporean/foreigner to achieve a low cost of living in JB for the benefit of the rakyat and the future generation. |

Re: No more cheonging in JB
When lesser singaporeans go to jb to spend money the businesses in jb will experience a drop in profit. They will then either increase the prices in order to recover the difference or lower the prices in order to win more businesses.
If they increase the prices then consumers suffer again. If they lower the prices and indeed businesses pick up then it will be the best for everyone but if it doesnt then a number of them might go out of business rendering lesser choices hence a drop in the quality of life for johoreans and also the risk of a monopolistic cartel forming in various sectors. The economy might shrink and deflation might set in too. And if they do not adjust the prices, singaporeans will not have the incentive to make the frequent trips in to spend money thus businesses might go bust and the above scenario might come true. Possible?

Re: No more cheonging in JB
Tonight came back from JB to spore, the traffic at causeway is super smooth, totally no jam. The number of spore cars entering and leaving jb had indeed reduced quite substantially.
Believe that sporean are now more cost conscious, and not wanting to spend more money than is necessary. Hopefully spore side could quickly increase the spore toll to match johor side to rm16.50 or $6.40, then we will see a stronger effect of less sporean going to JB and resulting a drop in business which is good because a low cost of living in JB can then be attained. |

Do you think msia side can afford if it doesn't have sufficient revenue. Now is toll increase, year end is VEP spore car and by next year april is 6% GST. Think more tax will be imposed in the near future to overcome the high expenses for infrastruture and to reduce deficit in foreign reserve. Not to forget about the hugh loss of money caused by mh370 and mh17. Therefore unlikely the msia govt will reduce the toll fee at the custom. The raising of the toll fee is not a retaliation to its neighbour but itself really needed the funds for its hugh expenses. |

Re: No more cheonging in JB
Rm 16.5 is neglectable ! Only 6.5. Must wait till SG increase the toll to 6.5 and the VEP imposed by jb to b capped at 50 then they will feel the pinch?
