Drastic Causeway toll hike will hurt businesses, say S'pore and Malaysia chambers

Two business chambers representing companies in Malaysia and Singapore have issued a joint statement warning that "drastic increases" in Causeway charges will have a detrimental economic impact.
Although the increase in the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee and toll charges will increase Government revenue, reduce vehicular flow and traffic congestion, these drastic increases could deal a big blow to businesses of both countries, especially the transportation industry, tourism, restaurants, hotels, retail business, manufacturing etc. It would also affect the industrial and business development. At the same time, these drastic increases will have a domino effect on the prices of consumer goods, add to the burden of people, and have a definite impact on their consumption ability.
Actually all these are excuses to persuade the msia govt not to increase the toll and VEP too high. All these business people are selfish, only think for their own interest but never consider the rakyat as a whole. Some people commented that some of the business like hotel operators, transport operators, shop owners, restaurants, shops, etc only know how to take advantage of increasing the price of goods and services when sporean came in to spend money and this also affected the lives of the local people (johorian)

Take for example, some taxi driver refused to use the metre when they picked up passenger in JB regardless of sporean or msian because they could have been overtip by sporean before and this could have made them to become more greedy by quoting high taxi fare than normal.

Therefore if less sporean comes in and their business affected is also teaching them a good lesson so that they don't anyhow raised market price of goods and services in the future.

Imagine if toll charges are not increased and the VEP not implemented, where to get the funds to maintain the CIQ facilities & roads as well as the Eastern Dispersal Link Highway ???

It is impossible for the msia govt to impose toll charge at the EDL highway and make johorian pay for it rite ?

Remember msia foreign reserve is already in deficit and if the govt do not have sufficient revenue, then how to upkeep the infracstructure in the country ?

Also don't forget msia will be implementing the Goods & Services Tax (GST) 6% in April 2015, by then everything will become more costly.

If johor cost of living keep rising because of too much investment by sporean/foreigner, then with the GST comes in, the rakyat will suffer very badly financially.

Therefore increasing the Toll and VEP for both countries is one good way to reduce investment by sporean/foreigner to achieve a low cost of living in JB for the benefit of the rakyat and the future generation.

I know because a few of my neighbours' houses are rented to outstation Malaysians ( from Batu Pahat, Segamat, Muar, Malacca, KL, PJ, Ipoh, Alor Star, Penang, etc, etc, .... ) who travel to work by motorbikes but have Proton or Toyota cars parked in the garages ...
In my opinion, in general, the msian car owner driving spore car may be cash rich but asset poor, as they may have spent lots of cash maintaining the spore car (more costly to maintain a wife) For example coe, road tax, insurance, parking, petrol, maintenance, servicing, monthly instalment, toll fee, vep fee, summons, washing fees, etc

On the other hand, the msian motorcyclists may be cash poor but asset rich that is why they only uses the motorcycle as majority of their savings may have gone to purchase landed properties or plantations (tanah) in their kampung.

Re: No more cheonging in JB

When lesser singaporeans go to jb to spend money the businesses in jb will experience a drop in profit. They will then either increase the prices in order to recover the difference or lower the prices in order to win more businesses.

If they increase the prices then consumers suffer again. If they lower the prices and indeed businesses pick up then it will be the best for everyone but if it doesnt then a number of them might go out of business rendering lesser choices hence a drop in the quality of life for johoreans and also the risk of a monopolistic cartel forming in various sectors. The economy might shrink and deflation might set in too.

And if they do not adjust the prices, singaporeans will not have the incentive to make the frequent trips in to spend money thus businesses might go bust and the above scenario might come true.

Possible?

Don't forget due to the "mysterious disappearance" of MH 370 and the "shooting down" of MH 17 the Malaysian Govt has to pay millions of $$$ to the victims .... also the ongoing search for MH 370 in the Southern Indian Ocean is costing the Malaysian Govt millions of SSS

Where to get the $$$ to pay ?

Someone came up with a "brilliant idea" !

Increase the Causeway toll charges and impose RM 50 VEP on SillyPoreans cars

S'porean attacked with hammer at JB petrol station

Report from The New Paper (Singapore) dated 16 August 2014 :-

S'porean attacked with hammer at JB petrol station

They were filling their car with petrol in Johor Baru when two armed robbers attacked them at around 2.45am on Tuesday.

Wedding photographer Muhammad Afiq Mohd Asmuni, 25, and his stepfather - both Singaporeans living in JB - were targeted at a Shell petrol station at Kampung Melayu Majidee.

The stepfather, who declined to be named, was hurt when one of the robbers attacked him with a hammer.

Located about a five-minute drive away from the Causeway, it is popular with Singaporean motorists.

Malay language daily, Berita Harian reported that the pair lost items including three mobile phones and about $900 in cash.

Re: No more cheonging in JB

Tonight came back from JB to spore, the traffic at causeway is super smooth, totally no jam. The number of spore cars entering and leaving jb had indeed reduced quite substantially.

Believe that sporean are now more cost conscious, and not wanting to spend more money than is necessary.

Hopefully spore side could quickly increase the spore toll to match johor side to rm16.50 or $6.40, then we will see a stronger effect of less sporean going to JB and resulting a drop in business which is good because a low cost of living in JB can then be attained.

Last year Spore and Msia have officially agreed to build a high-speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Spore by 2020 and the cost of construction is 40 billion ringgit. RM40,000,000,000.00.

Do you think msia side can afford if it doesn't have sufficient revenue.

Now is toll increase, year end is VEP spore car and by next year april is 6% GST.

Think more tax will be imposed in the near future to overcome the high expenses for infrastruture and to reduce deficit in foreign reserve. Not to forget about the hugh loss of money caused by mh370 and mh17.

Therefore unlikely the msia govt will reduce the toll fee at the custom.

The raising of the toll fee is not a retaliation to its neighbour but itself really needed the funds for its hugh expenses.

Many of those cars are owned by PRs working in S'pore and living in JB.... these are the people that contribute to the traffic congestion.

Cheongsters are not bothered by the increase as they do not enter JB daily and the amount is so insignificant to them compared to what they spend..... increase or no increase they will still go to cheong.

The bulk of the construction costs is to be bourned by Singapore.

Rm 16.5 is neglectable ! Only 6.5. Must wait till SG increase the toll to 6.5 and the VEP imposed by jb to b capped at 50 then they will feel the pinch?
