Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
So many traps and scams – alone in town for the first time – horny as hell – one way for me to buy “insurance” is to befriend the Concierge or one of the bellboys. Chat them up when they bring the luggage to your room, when you wait for taxi, or just waiting in lobby for your host to come pick you up, etc. You will soon find one that you can “click” and share the same interests in MMs – find out when he knocks off and invite him for a dinner – and a real night out.
My “theory” is that these are employees of the hotels and will not mess around with you since they would like to keep their jobs – especially if you are staying in a 4 or 5 stars hotels on company’s account. I have done this on many occasions and so far no one has ever taken advantage of me – in fact, I usually have a great time and often going to places that only see locals - yep, no foreigner or tourist. If he did a good job – meaning I had a great time, I don’t usually tip him since he doesn’t expect any and I make sure I pay for everything. Indeed, most would be happy to have a good night out. But I will make sure to bring gifts from Singapore for him on my next visit. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you will be surprised how you become “friend for life” just being considerate. Most likely he will tell you the new places that he came to know about since your last visit. For me, this is preferred to getting a taxi driver to take me around mainly because I don’t have any recourse if the taxi driver decides to play game with me. But for the employee of the hotel, I can always complain to the hotel if need to – and lucky for me, never had to despite all these years of traveling. And I have even commented to the hotel’s GM how the specific employee goes beyond the call of his duty to make my stay more “comfortable” (for my Lao Er lah!) – yeah, lagi score more brownie points. In fact, one of the best experiences I had was when the Marketing Director of one hotel in Beijing took me out one night – well, that’s another story. ![]() |

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
Experience of my PRC wife-to-be about 2 years ago. She visited her brother who is working in Shenzhen and stayed at his place. His brother's place is a condo with security guards. On the 2nd day, she woke up at about 12noon and discovered her brother's PC, her sister-in-law's watch and her own HP missing. She suspected she was drugged because she seldom wake up this late.
Due to some miscommunication, her brother didn't lock the door before he went out to work. So what we deduced is that this burglar went about every apartment and checked if the door was locked. Or maybe the security system is able to detect which door isn't locked and some crooked security guard tipped off the burglar. Then the burglar blow in some drug smoke to drug my gf and stole the valuables. Luckily she wasn't raped. Moral of the story: Never trust the security guards who may be lowly paid and need some extra cash. Never totally trust the security systems of the building. |

Just for bro info, if you are able to, choose a house with gate that is fully concealed meaning no one can slot any flyers / name cards /or even drug smoke into your house. If not, every god damn day you have to clear advertisments flyers/card at your door and imagine with all the access card and guards, still so many salesmen can go up to your place. |

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
it happens everywhere, ppl trying to put up stories. Sometimes when it happens, and if i see there is not many ppl around for help. I will just give some money and quickly walk away to prevent getting hurt phycially. Nowadays, my policy is just ignore whoever talks to u in China if he or she is a stranger from nowhere. Walk away and pretend i never hear them. Sounds cold? but the best way to protect myself i tink since i used it and it works.
As for locking up doors, u definitely should check wif the locals, cuz some places are said to be safer, than others. Also, being in singapore for too long, we tend to think, the world is a safe place! but the truth is : It's not!! Singapore is...

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
For the locals, they,
1. Try to use small / exact change for Taxi / bus or buy things from mom and pop shops. Tendency of getting fake changes reduced. 2. When driving, never stop to help others in distress (ie car accident, breakdown etc...) no matter how serious it is. 3. When you board the public bus, if suddenly 3 or more people pushing you from behind, you can be sure that a gang of snatch thieves or pickpockets at work, you shd turn around and take the next bus. Someone will block you for chasing the 'thief' when your valuable is gone. 4. Never wear your bag and put your wallet behind you / your pocket. 5. Wear minimum valuables, i do not wear watch, chain and don't even bring my wallet or credit card out. Put everything at home / hotel and just take enough cash. 6. Never draw cash from ATM with a couple of people loitering around. 7. Always exchange your currency from the bank. Not even Spore money changers as they are reports of fake notes. Trust no one and if you still happens to be picked or robbed, just take it as you lost it to 4-D as no mother fxxKer there will help you but a lot of them will crowd around. |

ANOTHER FAMILIAR STORY – MEN CAUGHT USING MMs AS BAITS FOR ROBBERIES IN SHENZHEN
Another story as a friendly reminder to those who prefer the FLs – just be vely2 careful hor. IMHO, best not to try FL unless someone introduces her directly or at least indirectly. But if die-die must want, take the MM back to your hotel and try not to go to her apartment. And never open your hotel room door if a stranger is knocking – if necessary, call the hotel’s management/security to assist. Too many similar stories before this one: http://www.southcn.com/news/gdnews/n...0611090423.htm Sorry – it is in Chinese. BTW, there have been too many nasty stories coming out of LuoHu train station area – so be on guard and must avoid at any cost to use your little brain for decision makings. Been back in SillyBore for too long, so plenty of time to catch up SF to amuse myself – especially it is raining like crazy out there right now. ![]() |

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
basically, 1 of the main issues is cos many, if not most SGPean brudders here grow up / stay in SGP for too long liao.
The sillypore gahmen policy & law, makes the whole city such tat u'll likely take safety for granted. there are cheats / robbers / thieves / conmen in every city, every country. Even shopping or buying anything, in SGP, u dun usually bargain, most things & shops are fixed price, merchandise have fixed market price. u buy from this shop or tat shop, will be same price, if not, not much difference. Outside SGP, the situation is totally different. Looking from another point of view, yes, SGP is a safe place, but so safe until u're like living in an artificial world!!! Of course, if u can't get used to the "real" world (outside SGP), then lan-lan "pay the price" of such a "nice world" & stay in SGP lor. why do so many brudders still wanna go China? main reason cos of the booming economy, everyone wants to make the $$$ there, compared to the kinda working environment & returns in SGP, yet the expenses (of course, the MMs are prettier, more gentle & much more affordable too) is so much lower!!! people in other countries oso do get conned / cheated / robbed etc, but it's not so uncommon to them, u dun see / hear them complain as much as sillyporeans. Cos many, if not most sillyporeans, are simply not used to this kinda environment / situations. The other thing is, China is juz so huge, with the largest population in the world. Any group or category of people, they juz count by the millions! so everything is plentiful, including petty or violent or commercial crime. I am actually amazed by the creativity & tricks of those criminals / syndicates. It's not easy to think of those tricks / scams either. I kinda find them creative / innovative! Of course, if they put it to good use, to help other people, contribute to society, the world would've been a much better place to live in. Probably the world would be crime-free liao. Dun talk about them, even sillyporeans oso not so noble, juz tat sillyporeans aren't so violent / dishonest. But again, even I am no saint. Will post some more of my experience / opinion when I have more time. |

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…
My personal experience in Shanghai and Beijing:
In Shanghai as I was window shopping near the Bund, a pretty lady came up to me and said she would like to be friends with me and as it was her weekend off she can accompany me around. She then suggested that we go to a cafe for a chat. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt but at the same time I was wary of tricksters, so I suggested we go to HK Cafe nearby (as I was familiar with the place and thus, safer), that is when she continue insisting that we go to this particular cafe. That confirmed to me that she was up to no good so I told her no way. I remember my China friends' advice that some of these ladies would get you to order some drinks and food at the cafe and later you will receive a huge bill, a typical basic con. In Beijing, while taking photos at tiananmen, I was approached by a young lady with a old granny and she tells me that she and her mother are visiting as tourist and she has lost her handbag, and she asks me for some money so that she and her mother can have some food and take a bus back. Out of pity, I gave them 50rmb so that they can at least have lunch. As I continued on my way, about an hour later, another lady with another old granny came up to me with the same sob story !!! This time, I walked away; but somehow, I felt bad about ignoring their plea as it is hard to tell whether it is genuine or not ??? |

Yes, there are so many scams that we tend to ignore even those who genuinely need help. This posting tells a sad story – the flip side of the coin. Sorry, it is also in Chinese: http://bbs.cri.cn/read.php?tid=21244...toread=&page=1
