KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14:

Malaysia’s first car-sharing scheme will start in the Klang Valley next month, allowing those who don’t own cars to drive.

Car park operator Godell Park Sdn Bhd has put its KAR Club on a trial run, eyeing office and expatriate workers as members.

"It will complement the public transport network. Public transport doesn’t go the last mile in certain parts of the Klang Valley," said operations manager Rosmin Wan Mohamed.

It’s also cheaper than owning a second or third car, he said.

Car-sharing is ideal for people who need a car occasionally. Instead of buying a car, members of a car-sharing club pay only when they drive.

Such schemes first took off in Europe in the 1990s, and are spreading even in car- crazed American cities.

Several exist in Singapore, the largest being run by the NTUC Income Car Co-operative. The co-op, which started in 1997 and now has 5,600 members, is working with Godell to set up the scheme here.

Godell runs the street Park & Display facilities in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and three other Selangor municipalities under a concession until 2023.

The KAR Club will start with 10 Toyota Vios parked at five locations in the city, including the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and KL Sentral.

It will cost RM15 an hour to take a car. Members must pay a RM200 one-off fee, a RM100 refundable deposit, and a RM30 monthly fee, and are issued with a smartcard.
