Re: Liverpool Fc @ Anfield - Reds Supporters Gatherings

From Soccernet.

Gillett: Liverpool in "outstanding" financial shape

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has claimed that the Premier League club has "never been stronger" from an economic perspective, while underlining that he has a long-term view of his association with the Reds.

Questions were raised regarding Liverpool's financial muscle during the summer transfer window but Gillett, who purchased the club along with Tom Hicks, is adamant that the economic situation at Liverpool is very much robust.

Having purchased the club for £435m in 2007, with money borrowed from both Wachovia and the Royal Bank of Scotland, he and co-owner Hicks were forced to refinance their debts in July. Doing so, says Gillett, has put the club on solid financial ground.

"The club is in outstanding shape," he told The Fan 590 - a Toronto radio station. "Economically, it's never been stronger. We just paid down our debt very substantially. We have less debt per dollar than any club in the league."

To make the payments, Gillett sold his interest in the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey club, valued at £200m ($334m) by Forbes magazine. Worth an estimated £660m ($1.1bn) in November 2007, a full year before the economic downturn, he was forced to sell one of his sports properties to fulfil what he termed "family commitments". The Canadiens, he admitted, were simply more sellable than Liverpool.

As for the tenure of his Liverpool ownership, Gillett stated that an assumption that he was in it for the long haul was "probably the correct conclusion". But, he added, "If someone gets beamed in who's got bags of money, things may change."

Gillett also confirmed that Liverpool will unveil a new shirt sponsor on September 18, stating: "I think people will be pleased and surprised. It will be one of the great, worldwide corporations. And I think it will be a sponsor people will be pleased and surprised to be [associated with] Liverpool."

Addressing the club's demand for tickets - which he estimated at 75,000 - he said both he and Hicks would revisit their plans for a new stadium "as the world economy gets better - if and when it gets better."

"We were going to build an iconic stadium previously," he said. "The world economy has certainly suggested that that would be a good suggestion. But in the normal world, building a stadium in the 65,000 to 75,000 seat range - we would look forward to that."

Stupid yankee. Changing shirt sponsor before 1 quarter of the season is up. It will leave all those who bought the black jersey with an outdated sponsor before 1/4 of the season is up. Why can't such things be done before the jersey gets released? I'll be fedup to spend SGD$90 on a new jersey that's outdated by Sept 18. Our season started in mid-august right?

u can t expect him to stop everything, but when the cross came over the other defenders have to do thier job as well, the issue of gj not able to defend is jus media hype.believe me he will become a better defender at pool.

In short.. these 2 clowns felt the Liverpool has been undervalued. Going to try to meddle around and then go with a huge profit margin. Just like they did with canadian team... us team...

I think he was never fast at all. Even when he was paired up with Henchoz, Sammi relies more on his reading over the game rather than his speed. I think what was apparent in the last few years is that he can't play back to back 90 mins. So if we have 3 games in a week, he can no longer play all 3 matches anymore like he used to. I don't think he slowed down at all. He was always slow but good. I miss watching him score at corners though. His headers are powerfully accurate. I don't wish to see him in SLeague. I do wish to see him as a TV pundit. I think Sammi is a level headed bloke who's comments would make sense.

So glad we scored 2 in the first half against Burnley. Was worried that it might be a match where our dominance wasn't reflected in the scoreline.

a good performance by the team.
half-time 2-0 and full-time 4-0 with Bennayoun getting an hat-trick.
this will prepare us well for this coming Thursday's morning match in the CL against Debrecen
can sleep soundly liao,it will be more sweet if only Stoke could hold-on for a bit longer.

'sleep soundly'? ... haha .. whthr we win or lose, it's important we sleep soundly everyday else nt very healthy. tt means this season u had oredi slept not soundly for 2 nites cos we lost twice! ... LOL .. juz joking bro. But it was a good all-round performance fr Pool again ... at least we redeemed ourselves at home after tt sad result agt AV. Ben sent a strong signal to Rafa y he deserved to b in d 1st team. 3 goals, 1 assist .. that spoke volumes of his capabilities! N it's gd to see GJ continuing his outstanding form as an exciting attacking defender! Nxt wk, anthr tough away game to West Ham ... tricky one ... esp after our mid-wk ECL tyrst!

juz nw i was watchin d stoke-chels match @ SPools. Once Dog equalised, many expected Chels to win d game after attacking waves after waves. wat more, they r d masters of late goals so it was nt surprising they grabbed d winner in inj time. too bad for us, i guess they probly deserved d 3 pts. i thk they really showed us what we had been sorely lacking last season - ability to break down tough defences n taking crucial pts off d weak teams.

went home n caught d spurs-scum match. was dam happy Defoe scored within a min game started. somehow Spurs juz cracked ... Giggs got d equaliser ... Anderson d 2nd ... even whn Scholes was red-carded n with ample time to search for d equaliser, Spurs was impotent ... n let Shrek score d 3rd. Same old story which Spurs LOVE to throw away their leads agt Scums. Well, I think Modric's absence n Lennon's jaded-ness could hv made d diff but credit to d scums for displaying a championship performance to kill off Spurs at home.

Soooo ... with above results + d irresistable form of Man C, our good old Pool will have to work very very hard this season if we wanna win that title!

well, it's 4am n im dead tired ... 1 thing's for sure ... I will definitely sleep soundly!
