Petchaburi Soi 5 (เพชรบุรี ซอย 5)

How to get there: Take the BTS skytrain to Ratchathewi station, exit #3, then cross over Petchaburi Road, make a left on Petchaburi, and walk until you get to Soi 5, and then turn right.

Open hours: Throughout the daytime some stalls and restaurants are open, but especially in the evening starting at around 5 pm

Hidden in-between the modern shopping area of Siam and Victory Monument, and hidden in the Phaya Thai neighborhood, is Pectchaburi Soi 5.

This soi especially comes alive in the evening, when you’ll find dozens of street food carts and restaurants with their doors open, catering to many people coming home from work. Since it’s a neighborhood, much of the street food in the evening is for takeaway, but there are still some places to sit down and enjoy a meal.

You’ll find all sorts of noodle vendors, salad vendors, fruit stalls, and infinite snacks. It’s a very local Thai market street, yet it’s so close to the center of Bangkok.

Another great reason to go to Petchaburi Soi 5 is to dine at P’Aor for a delicious bowl of tom yum goong noodles. The rice noodles swim in a thick and creamy broth that sweet and sour and milky from the shrimp head oils. It’s amazing.

Talat Phlu (ตลาดพลู)

How to get there: You can take the BTS to Talat Phlu station, and from there, the market and street food area is about a 10 minute walk away.

Open hours: Day and night

Talat Phlu (ตลาดพลู) is an old-school street food garden of Eden in Bangkok that straddles the train track coming from Wang Wian Yai.

The area is blessed with high concentration of skilled street food personnel that pride themselves on serving some of the best things to eat in Bangkok. A number of street food stalls have received local Thai awards for their dishes, including an ancient street cart serving a snack (kanom buang yuan ขนมเบื้องญวน) that is so famous it has been decorated with plaques and winning awards that dangle from the pole of the street light.

Around Talat Phlu (ตลาดพลู) there’s a there’s a great place for some of the best some of the best sticky rice and durian in Bangkok, and Lan Thung Khao Tom Hua Pla that serves among my favorite versions of steamed sea bass with lime sauce (pla kahpung neung manao, ปลากะพงนึ่งมะนาว).

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand

Rangnam (รางน้ำ)

How to get there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Victory Monument station, exit #2, walk straight and make a left on Rangnam.
Open hours: Lunch and dinner

Perpendicular to Victory Monument BTS station is the fashionable street, popular with both locals and expats, known as Rangnam.

There are a slew of trendy bars, international restaurants, hotels, massages, some fancier sit down restaurants (like Tida Esarn), and a worthy mass of street food stalls that sprout up especially in the evening time.

At the far end of Rangnam (next to Ratchaprarop Rd.) is Kuang Seafood, among my favorite Thai seafood restaurants in Bangkok.

Directly opposite Kuang Seafood, just outside the Esso petrol station is a fantastic Isan street food stall that sets up for dinner, and where you can eat just about all thing Isan.

Rangnam road also has a rib noodles stall that will have you licking your lips for days. Also, you can also occasionally find Thailand’s notorious dancing shrimp from a vendor in the afternoon.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand

Nang Loeng (นางเลิ้ง)
How to get there: The easiest way to get to Nang Loeng (นางเลิ้ง) is to hop in a taxi and go directly to the market. It’s pretty close to Democracy Monument.
Open hours: Lunchtime from about 10 am – 1 pm daily (but weekdays are best)

A leisurely stroll through Nang Loeng (นางเลิ้ง) market is both an enjoyable experience and a feasting opportunity for you.

The market itself is a throwback in time, along with Ratchawat and Sriyan, it’s one of the few remaining traditional neighborhood markets in Bangkok.

The market consists of picturesque ancient wooden buildings and grannies that have made the same home-made snacks and Thai desserts for the entirety of their lives. The Thai recipes of dishes at Nang Loeng are proven.

The market is especially a great weekday morning and lunch street food spot in Bangkok. Nang Loeng (นางเลิ้ง) is sort of in a square shape, with some restaurants and street stalls on the outside, and a full lunchtime food court in the middle. At lunch, the market is packed with hungry office workers.

As traffic roars outside, strolling around inside Nang Loeng (นางเลิ้ง) you might think you’ve escaped Bangkok for a while. The food is always worth a visit.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand

The Sixth – 6th

Address: 6 Soi Tha Tien, Maharaj Road. Khet Phra Nakhon area near Wat Pho (reclining Buddha)
How to get there: Take the sky train to Saphan Taksin station, and take the river ferry to pier no. 8 Tha Thien, and walk from there (only a short walk)
Opening hours: 10:30 – 17:15. Closed on Sundays.

The Sixth is a cool and hip little place with excellent authentic Thai food! With only five tables, run and owned by a young couple, the place has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

We particularly love their red curry with prawns, chicken cashew nuts, and Tom Yam Koong. So tasty!

Do try their awesomely yummy chocolate lava cake with mango or Mango sticky rice for dessert. The menu is in English, and the couple speaks excellent English.

They serve great Thai Ice Tea (our favorite!), Ice Lemon Tea, and other drinks like different coffee, White Tea, Matcha Tea, and different kinds of homemade sodas.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand

Sukhumvit Soi 38 Street

Address: Sukhumvit Soi 38 street
How to get there: Taxi or BTS Skytrain to Thong Lo station, and you are right by the street food area.
Opening hours: Afternoon around 17:00 until late

We used to love the food market along the street Sukhumvit Soi 38, but after serving delicious street food for decades, it has now sadly reduced the number of stalls due to a new huge building.

Sukhumvit Soi 38 is now more like an indoor food court but still serves excellent authentic Thai street food. It still is one of our favorite places to head for cheap, delicious, and fresh street food in Bangkok.

Re: Food glorious food! Thailand

Yaowarat Street (Chinatown)

Address: Yaowarat Street
How to get there: Taxi or MRT to Hua Lamphong station then walk 15 minutes.
Opening hours: All day, but best in the evenings

Bangkok’s Chinatown, known locally as Yaowarat, is a great place to sample some street food and is arguably Bangkok’s street food center. All along Yaowarat road, street stalls and small restaurants serve up some delicious treats.

The mix of Thai and Chinese dishes on offer is staggering, and the smells are heavenly. A good strategy is usually just to try what looks and, perhaps most importantly, smells best to you.

Barbecued seafood is seriously popular here, as is flat noodles in pepper broth, dim sum, and all sort of fruit desserts. Walking around, you can find all kinds of Thai food, from Satay, pad Thai, barbecue spears with peanut butter, chicken in different variations, fried rice, noodles, and different soups, crispy duck, and curries of all kinds.

Make sure to sample small portions, and do not fill up all in one place. While you can find food here all day, it comes alive in the evening when people come out to eat.

Prachak – Bangkok`s Best Roasted Duck

Address: 1415, Charoen Krung Road, Silom, opposite Robinson’s department store
How to get there: Take the sky train to Saphan Taksin sky train station, and walk from there.
Opening hours: 08:00 – 20:30

There are simply too many food gems along this road to mention them all, but here lies Prachak Pet Jang, famous for its Chinese-style roasted duck with a dark, spicy sauce over rice. It is delicious! The skin is perfectly crispy, while the duck meat is super juicy. The rice is cooked perfectly, and the Chinese sausage is delicious slightly sweet. Mmmmmm!Prachak is an institution and has served roasted duck to hungry Thais since 1909!

Charoen Saeng Silom – Bangkok’s Best Braised Pork Knuckle

Address: 492/6 Soi Charoen Krung 49
How to get there: Take the sky train to BTS Saphan Taksin Station, and walk from there (an 8 min walk).
Opening hours: 07:30 – 13:30

Charoen Saeng Silom has been serving their famous and delicious braised pork (Khao Kha Moo) in Bangkok since 1959, and they sure know how to cook the perfect braised pork knuckle! It is served with steamed rice and tasty, rich soy and vinegar-based sauce with many Chinese spices and herbs that go hand in hand with the tender and soft pork meat. The meat is so soft that it melts in the mouth.

In December 2017, they were even mentioned in the Michelin Guide for 2018!

This is not a fancy place. It is basic and about as authentic as you can get when it comes to a Bangkok street food restaurant. Everyone from school girls to posh business people in suits driving fancy cars eats here.

You can choose to sit outside at a table on the street or inside (no aircon). The place is super popular, but the queue is elegantly handled by the old cheerful guy that owns the place, so there is not much waiting. Due to its popularity, you might have to share a table with other people, but hey, that is a great opportunity to chat with some Thais and get some more local tips about places to eat and things to see.

Tealicious

Address: 492 Trok To, Soi Charoen Krung 49
How to get there: Take the BTS sky train to Saphan Taksin sky train station, and walk from there. It is located in the same street as Charoen Saeng Silom (further up in this article).
Opening hours: 12:00 – 23:00. Closed on Wednesdays.

This family-run Thai restaurant is a real gem in a small alley (the same alley as Charoen Saeng Silom that we have written about further up in this post). It is a rather small restaurant, but you can sit inside (aircon) or outside.

Their food is delicious, and you find authentic classic Thai dishes on the menu, all made from scratch. You can choose the spiciness, so if you can´t handle Thai spicy (I sure cannot! 🙂 ) then they make it to your liking.

They are famous for their Pad Thai, but unfortunately, we have not tried it yet and went for the Massaman Curry, Red Curry chicken (yep, we sure L-O-V-E red curry chicken 🙂 ) and of course the mandatory Thai Ice Tea. Everything was perfectly delicious!

To sum up, Tealicious: Super friendly staff, awesome food, great location next to the Sky bar from The Hangover movie if you want to have a drink with an amazing view after your meal at Tealicious.

Blue Elephant

Address: 233 South Sathorn Road
How to get there: Take the BTS Skytrain to Surasak station and walk from there (short walk)
Opening hours: 11:30 – 21:30 every day.

Blue Elephant is an upscale Thai restaurant housed in a beautiful old Thai Chinese building constructed in 1903. This is one seriously charming Thai restaurant; the decor, the atmosphere, the cutlery, the service, and of course the delicious authentic Thai food.

There are actually nine Blue Elephant restaurants across Europe, the Middle East, and Bangkok. The owner and Master Chef Nooror Somany-Steppe is world-famous for her Royal Thai cooking.

Be aware that men have to wear pants for dinner in the evening, but shorts at lunch is ok (if you show up in shorts in the evening, you can borrow pants at the restaurant).

The prices are a bit higher here than at the more common Thai cafes/ restaurants in Bangkok, but you come here for the total package and experience. This is the place for special occasions. However, it is a bit touristy so it can be crowded, especially when big tour groups visit the restaurant. And yep, Blue Elephant even has a gift shop.

Blue Elephant also has a famous Thai cooking school and a small shop where they sell ingredients and do-it-yourself packages so that you can make their delicious Thai dishes at home. These packages are sold all over the world, even back home in Norway. We have made their Red curry, Green Curry, and Pad Thai at home, and it is almost as good as in the restaurant!

Blue Elephant also has restaurants in Phuket in Southern Thailand, Malta, and Copenhagen in Denmark.
