these seem like a good bargain...cost at least 50% less than regular hotel. a few questions, if you don't mind. -do you get a free 2/3 hr massage for each night of stay? -do these places have in-room safes (to secure passport, plane tickets, extra $, etc)? -other places (e.g. dongguan) have these sort of accomodations? thanks alot. ![]() |

When you mention Europe, there's a reason why they have problems with ballooning taxes, cost of living, uncompetitive industries etc. Once you hire a person, its very difficult to cut them lose and regardless of the performance they do, you have to pay through the nose to keep those employees. That's why companies are much more relunctant to hire and you have new graduates having such a tough time finding decent employment. Europe is not something we in Singapore should ever aspire to, given our lack of resources and our reliance as a trading/financial center. Lastly, its your choice. Not to say wrong, and in fact I find it admirable that you have a good balance between family and work, but bro, very hard to find sympathy when you say 10hrs a day is alot of work. I work anything from 70-100hrs per week, and when I work 60hr weeks, it feels like heaven. I'm relatively well compensated for the effort and am willing to put as much as needed as I'm at the age when career triumphs all other concerns. True, will be very difficult to do this when I have kids or family, but it all boils down to how you want to balance work and leisure. Also as you climb up the seniority ladder, more work can be delegated. I think Sing gov has done a great job in making sure that as much of the population has a stable wage and decent lifestyle. Not great by any means but at least comfortable. Its our desire to own private apts, country clubs, maintain mistresses, multiple vehicles etc that usually drives alot of our complaints about pay levels. While there are people struggling (as in any country/economy), its significantly less than our neighbors. There's a reason why Singaporeans are going to Indo, Malaysia, Phillippines to party rather than the other way round... |

![]() Glad to share your perspective but I guess each individual think and act differently for their career. Do what is best for oneself. There's no doubt that Singaporeans have better advantage if compared to our regional neighbours. However we must compare apples to apples. Maybe comparing to Hong Kong could be a better example. By the way Hong Kong does not have GST. Food is a little more expensive than Singapore. Only downside is their property prices are very expensive. There're still cheap places to stay in Hong Kong. Can even move to Shenzhen and reside. I've to give credit to the government when Singapore just gained independence. All policies are really geared at helping out Singaporeans. Just look at these days the policies are milking us low income earners. I may not have high education level but at least I know something is really wrong when staples like rice, flour and cooking oil are getting more expensive. Just look at the public transport. In other countries it's about serving the public regardless of profits. But SMRT talks money only. Public transport and food are getting more expensive but our salaries are shrinking. Lastly I fully agree to your statement, "True, you are disadvantaged when it comes to costing, but think about the advantages you have had in education and upbringing." That's why we need to travel even more to source for better deals in regards to work and entertainment. Don't be a sucker on this tiny island. ![]() |

Re: Cheonging Adjustments During Recession
Agreeded. Just as Singapore is more economically advanced that Malaysia, Hk is ahead of Singapore (although not as big a difference). Some of it is location, you can't beat just being a 30 minute drive away from China.
But wholeheartedly agree with your statement of traveling for entertainment ![]() That's why I'll be in China in June and hope to meet up with some of you guys. Already arranged to meet a few SBFers and hoping to meet more. Cheers! |
