Teen girls seek popularity by selling nude photos

VietNamNet Bridge – It is no longer strange to see small Internet ads by young girls who offer their own nude photos for sale.


A girl advertised herself on many online forums as a teen girl named Thao, living on Dinh Tien Hoang road, District 3, HCM City saying she would like to sell her nude body through the webcam. To watch a 30-minute show, “customers” have to pay 50,000 dong ($2.5).

“Customers” will have to pay the fees by sending the code of pre-paid phone cards worth 50,000 dong to her via Yahoo Messenger. The more they pay, the longer they can watch the show.

Viewers can become VIP clients after watching the show five times. VIP clients can go out with the girl or spend a night with her.

Through Yahoo Messenger, the girl told the reporter who played the role of a client she is 18 years old and she has been selling her nude pictures for five years. Her clients are mainly young boys.

After the reporter sent her the code of a 50,000 dong phone card, she turned on the webcam and the show began. This was a young girl with a lovely face.

Another girl with nickname TieuthuPN offered her nude pictures for sale. Clients have to contact her viamobile phone. The price for a photo is 100,000 dong ($5). Customers will get one free for each five pictures.

This form of “business” has appeared recently and it is opposed by many members of the online community. Many say this was a way for some people to become popular or famous.

Some girls cheat their “customers”. After receiving the code of phone cards, they simply turn off the webcam and sign out from YM.

Chair of Hoang Anh Gia Lai group Doan Nguyen Duc said he was not surprised. “I think there are many people who have the same name as mine. I don’t care about this because this is a virtual name,” Duc said.

Experts said that this is the start for a new service that “sells the names of famous people” in Vietnam.

The director of an IT firm in Hanoi said that speculation of domain names has appeared in Vietnam several years ago but buyers are few. “Trading domain names after the names of celebrities is not new in the world but it is new in Vietnam because e-commerce isn’t yet developed,” he said.

He said not many organizations are interested in launching their own websites so they would not pay several hundreds or thousands of US dollars to buy domain names after their names.

However, he said that this business will grow in the future when e-commerce really develops in Vietnam.

HCM City does well in combating HIV ‘but more effort needed'

VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City has achieved great success in combating HIV/AIDS in the two decades since it reported the country's first case, but more efforts are needed, a health official said.

Speaking at the opening of a photo exhibition depicting the fight against HIV at the Youth Cultural House on Saturday, Dr Le Truong Giang, deputy head of the HCM City AIDS Committee, hailed the efforts to protect people from the disease.

Giang, who is also deputy head of the city Department of Health, said that in 1995 WHO had warned there would be 200,000 people with HIV in HCM City in 2000. "But now, a decade later, the city only has around 40,000 patients and around 8,000 people have died since 2000," Giang said.

"After 20 years of combating the disease non-stop, we have achieved great success in preventing its spread in the wider community," he said.

The city has a programme to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to their unborn children. "In Viet Nam only in HCM City is it successful, with 150 children saved each year," he said.

The free anti-retroviral treatment offered to every HIV/AIDS patient has also been very successful, helping save an estimated 10,000 patients from possible death, according to Giang.

In the early days of the epidemic, the fatality rate was pretty high, with 2,000 people dying as recently as five years ago. But the number has now fallen to 600 a year.

Though the rate of infection among drug users and sex workers peaked in 2001 and 2002 at 80 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, Giang admitted that drug use and prostitution remained a problem, with drug users appearing to get younger.

HIV transmission between men who have sex with men was becoming a great concern and this group would be the focus of the city's upcoming campaign, he said.

The Ministry of Health's HIV/AIDS Prevention Department announced recently that more than 9,000 new cases were detected in the first nine months this year.

Men, mostly aged between 20 and 39, accounted for 70 per cent of the patients. HCM City had the largest number with 1,345.

Football betting now legal in Vietnam

According to Phuong, while rich people in urban areas pawned their valuable assets such as laptops or cars, poor people in rural areas pawned their land plots which they inherited from parents or grandparents. The people were so fond of gambling that they even bet all their assets. Therefore, the people would become penniless once they lost the bet.

Meanwhile, officials from the Ministry of Finance believe that if football betting is put under control, this will help prevent social evils, and no farmer will lose land, their most important asset. The ministry has decided that the minimal bet is 10,000 dong ($0.5) and the maximal bet is 1 million dong ($50) a day.

Once football betting legalized, money will go to the state budget

It is clear that the demand for football betting in Vietnam is very high. That explains why Vietnamese people not only join domestic betting activities, but also access international betting websites which they can easily find by searching on Google. The well-known websites sbobet, ibet888.net, asianbookie have the advertisement banners in Vietnamese to attract Vietnamese bettors.

It is not by chance that a lot of foreign bankers want to set up businesses in Vietnam. At this moment, they are trying to exploit the Vietnamese market which they believe to be very lucrative.

According to the Ministry of Public Security, for the last 60 football matches in the 2010 World Cup, it is estimated that 50,000-70,000 visitors who accessed foreign betting websites, were from Vietnam. The value of their betting activities might reach tens million dollar.

It is clear that by prohibiting football betting, the state fails to collect a huge sum of money in tax. Though the state cannot collect the money, it still has to spend money to settle the social problems caused by football betting.

Football betting will develop at reasonable level

According to Nguyen Thanh Dam, a senior official from the Ministry of Finance, who is in charge of compiling the legal document regulating football betting, said that it will be designed in a way that allows the betting to develop only to a reasonable level.

According to the draft decree, betting business will be strictly controlled by the State. Only firms that meet certain conditions will be licensed to provide the service.
