Uncle Sino,

When I was travelling with my LT on the bus from NKS enroute to HM, the bus that we were on was playing a video to warn passengers of such scams. I thought by now alot of the buses would have played that video 1000 times, but I guess still not enough air time. In addition to that, another more ridiculous trick is a green pencil change to red pencil trick. I simply cannot imagine anybody can fall for that. Also, those who travel with laptop and put it at the overhead compartment beware that sometimes when the bus is full and there are lots of people standing, some of them might just swap your laptop away.

While in HM, LT's TW friend got a counterfeit and didn't realise it. After when he tried to pay for dinner that the stall we ate at returned the note then he realise it was a fake. We passed it round to check, it looks so real, only that the texture of the paper is too smooth to be true. After that, I check on my RMB notes as well, and realise that the new notes those ones that do not have the serial number at the side, the texture is almost too smooth to be real. The colour tone is also slightly different if you look carefully.

While I was in CN last month, in the news in GZO, whoever who blow the whistle on pick pockets usually end up with serious physical harm, one guy who tried to stop a pickpocket got stab in the back by the pickpocket counterpart, near the kidney, luckily he never die, but I not sure if there is any serious permanent damage even after he recover.

I must have mention it before, no matter how much we try to dress down, we still stick out like a sore thumb, especially when we are in a group, that's why sometimes I feel very uncomfortable with large crowds. The local will know and assume we must be the rich from TW or HK ripe for picking. I guess the trick is minimisation of losses if something ever happens. I bring a separate wallet which only carries my CC and other important ID. The RMB 100 notes I use a clip and put it in my front jeans pocket, any lose change I then put it in the rear pocket or anywhere easy depending on what I wear, sometimes gotta pay motorbike, transport, tips or snacks and meal, easier than fishing out a bunch of RMB100 notes. Or keep the tissue wrapper which some of the wrappers are quite nice and can use it as a temp wallet, just that don't mistaken it as tissue paper and throw it away or use it to wipe... heheh...
The worse thing is some of the notes are so fragile that you have to handle with care, some looks like they are pre-Warring States relic parchments dug out from Xian that anytime the note will disintegrate when it is exposed to air.

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…

Let me share my encounter on the PRC's scams in Suzhou.

It was on a weekend afternoon as I was busy preparing for some shipment of goods to singapore. Suddenly my HP rangs

PRC : XXX (my surname and name to the exact word) zai ma??? Is Mr so-and-so in?

I : wo shi!!! I am

PRC : qing wen ni you mei you kong shou shou hua(in a seductively tone)??? Are you free to have some conversation???

I : wo mei kong!!! Ni you shen me shi??? I'm not free!!! What do you want???

PRC : qi shi wo you shi qing xiang yao ni ban mang???: Actually I got some favour from you....

I : Ni xiang gan ma??? What do you want???

PRC : wo you yi ge xiao jie mei...gang gang zhong lao jia guo lai...mei you qian...xi wang ni neng ban ban ta??? I have a young friend whom just came here from her hometown and she is in need of $$$ now....hope that you can help her.......

I : Yao wo zhe me ban mang??? How you want me to help???

PRC : ta hai shi ge huang hua gui nu...xi wang ni neng ban ta kai le.... She is still a yellow flower girl (i.e virgin lah)...hope that you can help me "open"....

I : shen jing bing !!! mad.... Put down my phone straight away

Hope you guys can understand the conversation...

Anyway...i think this will certainly be a scam....Either that the so called "virgin" is another pro that serve many other man b4 and the virginity is actually referring to that day as I might be her first customer for the day .... Or while you are happily bonking away...suddenly you realise that there are a group of camera man...director... special effect man standing ard you....recording a "live" AV in actions..before fining it way to SB....

Hope this is suffice to caution some of our bros over here.....

.....

When we related this incident to the MM we met in CP, our MMs told us that's this trick is so common in Its comes in different form but basically the geese is the same... Captalised on human "greed"...

Like that "stopid China lady" wanting to cheat and save on a 40rmb bus ticket and ending losing out 1500rmb...hehe.... She really deserved it...
Thanks bro sinoview for sharing ... but this lady damn stoopid lahh either tat or she damn greedy ... this whole thing smells like rat shit rite from the beginning ...

Anyway ... when I was in China previously I heard from a fren who is managing a factory there ... one of his admin staff got stabbed when on office errands .. end up died of excessive blood lost...

the poor guy dun hav any insurance, so the company on grounds of compassion offered to give compensation ... a relative came to office to collect it complete with a flower stand tat praises the company for its compassion towards worker etc etc... so after receiving the $$$ ... the person in charge asked wats the guy's relationship to the dead guy ... he cheekily said .. "Ohh nothing much ... I m juz a distant relative ..."

got several others scary stories abt china scams ... will share them once I hav the time ... hehe ... maybe bros like banana can contribute some oso ...

Bro j4f,
I have experienced twice, similar calls.
"PRC" is too big to quote.
Well, it goes like this.....

Him: Are you Mr XYZ?
Me: Yes, what can I do for you?

Him: Is it convenienve for you to talk?
Me: Yes, please...

He sounded very quiet and secretive saying that he is from so & so constrcution company in Suzhou, he is the site manager, he fellow workers just dig out some antique underground. He heard some background noise (mid of meeting) from my phone, he said if I am busy he will call back later or may be I can go some quiet place, so that no one can get to listen to our conversation.

To find out what he is up to I continue with the conversation, basically, he said, as the anqitue are histrorical relic, cannot be traded in China, he hoped that I can help to transport them to Singapore. And would like to meet up with me.

Well, I don't know how they found out my nos, I just ended saying that I cannot help, sorry.

Yours isnt't too bad, may be you can check with him on the vital statistic before you hang out the phone.....

Lastly, if you have seen the news on TV (Shanghai News and Leisure Channel)
last nite, they have shown how the swinders cheated on people but I think many of them not targeted at us. I am amased by the ideas they have.

After all, I think pickpocket should be our main worry, I have seen a few, either they walked/cycled in group, very common these days, I am sure many bros knew these as well. Just be careful if they are muslim or those from Xinjiang, they can carry sword/knife legally with them.

So you are staying for your CNY? Re-union dinner with your future-in-laws...

Cheers!
SG

There's a Henan movie, actors speak in the native Henan slang, it's about mine workers and how this 2 workers murdered a "lao xiang" fellow townfolk in a disguise as work accident to get worker's comp. They then tried to hatch another plot on another guy to get money, and out of conscience, as the target is a virgin, they tried to get him one last wish before they execute their plot. The movie depicts the intricate relationship in how existing employee in a firm get so called "fellow townfolk" to work in the same company, or from another point of view the lack of formal HR policies.

This is a NO WIN situation, even if it is a real relic. Infact, it is much safer if the relic is fake, because you only get cheated of your money. If it is a real relic, you are in serious shit because I think the punishment for smuggling relic is the urban legend of paying 75cents for the bullet... :P

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…

me too encountered many scams and thieves.. especially when travelling to African continent.

Well recent encounter was a little diff and i wish to share with bros here. I was at Don Muang, BKK just touched down on SQ and was queing for taxi.. soon it was the turn of the lady in front of me and when she approached the taxi counter she had diff speaking thai/english. She spoke in Mandarin and looked really worried and lost. She's in early 20's and alone with only 1 hand luggage, dunno why she target me, she turned to me and ask if I can speak Mandarin, and I replied "Of cos".. she was delighted and relieved to hear that and she explained that she just landed from HK and her tour guide didn't turn up as promised to pick her up and she's lost and do not know what to do. She explained that a friend had arranged on her behalf for the tour guide to take her around and she couldn't contact her friends cos her mobile is not roaming. She ask if she could tag with me for a night while she igure out how to contact her friends or travel agent. I smell fish.. but well, I lied to her ..sorry I can't take her in my room cios I'm staying with my boss who has an apartment here.. I can let her ride in my cab and I can arrange a hotel for her.. she agreed and hop in.

I asked driver to take us to Siam Beverly Hotel.. along the way, we chatted and found that she is actually from Shenzhen not HK, she said she's selling some clothes/etc at Shenzhen, her name is Zhang Fxxx as per passport aged 24 and pettite little gal with a big sweet smile, nice body and typical SYT. We reached the hotel and I helped her checked in and chatted in room. I checked her ticket and confirmed she's returning to HK by Gulfair 2 days later, she had about 4000+ HK dollars that's about S$900 with her, more than enough to visit for a couple of days. My suspicious was she's here on transit to stamp visa?? I dun know..
we bid goodbye and she promised to see me again tomorrow. Tomorrow I called her at hotel and we arrange to meet about 10 pm at night as I was having dinner with business assoiciates. When I reached the hotel, she was half asleep in her oversized t-shirt, she invited me in and started to hug me and getting touchy, I could have bonk her right then but dunno why I still feels abit fishy although she didn't had any further request except to ask me to bring her around town for sight-seeing.

I left without any action and unfortunately, I lost my Thai hp and she could not contact me anymore.. she checked out and left bangkok on her own.. but I guess either her plans foiled or it was a genuine case

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…

Just to highlight those small time cheat in China. Actually even PRC themselves kena con.

On 24.12.2005 @evening time I was at Harbin with my PRC girl. Coming out from the hotel, there was those illegal hawker selling their stuff along the road. My girl approach one hawker and ask the price of 'song zi' (one kind of nut/ kuay chee), consider quite popular & expensive in china. He reply RMB$8/ jin..... he even pick some from the basket and ask her to try... my girl taste already say not bad and buy some, cost @RMB$25.... cos she say normally sell for @RMB$20+/jin.......... Then we make a turn back to hotel to put the thing as we are going out to see 'Bing Teng'...... The hotel staff saw us and ask where we buy it,,, we say along the road.... They say we are cheated.... open up and check..... KNN inside really all empty shell... haha

Rush out to check whether that man still around..... haha already MIA.

Moral : Dont buy from illegal hawker

Re: China – Traps & Scams – real life experience…

After reading all these scams, i feel i'd better add this story i heard last night while on flight back....

I was on plane when i bumped into a good sg buddy also coming back from Sha....

He had a rather interesting encounter in BEIJING...

It goes something like this: He was all alone walking on the streets when a very attractive MM invited him to go to a KTV nearby....

Feeling bored and lonely, he tagged along and upon seeing a rather decent 3-storey establishment, decided that it should be safe.

Well, he was quoted the normal beer rates and the chicks were quoted at RMB 100....

However, as the night continued on....the girls ordered brandy and that's where the problem starts....

He was quoted RMB 300 for the brandy (One full glass of pure brandy) BUT the scam was that it was actually RMB 300 for 1 shot (or something along that line)...

Well, long story short, the bill came up to RMB 15k plus!!!

He disputed and after announcing some govt officials name that he had just had meeting with earlier in the day.....and also telling them he didn;t have enough money anyway...

they settled for RMB 1100 for the total bill.....

He was lucky that he had announced the official's name or else.....it would have been disastrous.....

SO....advice to bros who are new to China.....stick to your schedule and do not follow any strangers...... only go out with locals that you can trust...

Cheers

Suzhou, used to be ancient city of Gu Su which is the capital of Wu. You'd probably find Sun Zi's relics there rather than terracotta which is a Qin relic, post Warring States somemore.

Well, I have encountered about the relics 2-3 times, and they actually called my SG phone...

When I was in China, I saw on news, a lady was called up by a "bank security officer", stating that her account has been compromised, so she need to setup another account...and so on. At the end, she lost a few hundred thousand rmb after shifting the money into the new account....

Guess if you try enough, you will find someone who will fall for such tricks.

Such “Hei Dian (黑店)” is not uncommon and even locals are not immune to it. I remember three local friends and me got into a taxi one evening after dinner in Qingdao, intending to go to a KTV that they are familiar with. However, the taxi driver “introduced” us to a brand new KTV that has just opened behind the Equatorial Hotel, in the basement of a modern office building. My local friends decided to check the place out – they did the right thing: asked to look at the room and confirmed the prices. Seem reasonable and the hardware brand new, and MMs quality good and acceptable at RMB100 – so we went in.

However, when we decided to call the bill after a couple of hours total amount just did not jive since we were all drinking beer. I can’t remember exactly how much, but it was something like RMB5000. It then turned out the MMs have been “ordering” all the “special drinks” without asking us – in fact, based on the amount - we were quite sure the waitress probably just kept bringing the drinks as per instructions of the management.

Needless to say, my friend disputed the bill and let them know that we are locals. That’s when the “manager” came and decided to give 50% discount. However, my friends insisted on getting the official receipt (发票) – that’s when some “muscular” goons appeared. But my friends being locals, kept their cool and told them we have no problem paying the amount but just need an official receipt, which is a reasonable request if the joint has proper license. The manager, for whatever reason did ultimately agreed to a much smaller amount (I remember it was something like 10% of the original amount at RMB500) to let us go without the official receipt. He was either street-smart or lucky because one of my friend’s brother-in-law was the GA chief responsible for the area – that’s why he was insisting on the official receipt that could be used as evidence.

So, even locals are not immune to such “Hei Dian黑店” – but as a rule, I would not go to any KTV outside the hotels unless I’m with a friend who has been there before, or at least recommended by someone who has been there. Otherwise, I will stick to the KTV within the hotel – although they usually cost more, but at least relatively safer. Then again, I have heard of cases where customers have been “over-charged” by drinking joints inside the hotel, but these are usually ones that have been “sub-contracted” out to independent operators.

Maybe we should start a new thread, or even within this thread, to name and give the full details of such “Hei Dians黑店” whether they are KTVs, BBSs, SNs, or shops selling merchandise… or anyone who has a habit of ripping customers off – so that fellow cheongsters can avoid the named establishments. Yeah, we can always say it happened to a friend’s friend, or neighbor… to protect the innocence. After all, this is a forum to share useful information.
