Part 3 of trip report (posted on ezboard on 22 May 2004)

TOUR AGENCIES (TA)
===================
As you walk around the Hatyai town, you will inevitable notice the many tour agencies lining the street. The tourism sector is competitive and hence, price differential between companies is usually small (say + / - 20 baht). In most cases, it does not matter much if you were to book from TA 1 or TA 2. Nevertheless, it is still important for you to roughly know the going rate so as not to get ‘chop chop’.

I like the following tour agency best because I can click with the lady boss and her female employee. The said shop is located opposite Novotel (not at the direction of Lee Garden).

South Travel Hatyai – 13 Prachathiphat Road (074-350298, 01-8962241)

THE FISH FARMS
===============
Having visited the various well known RLD, I observed that See Kim Yong (SKY) seems to lose out in both quantity and quality of fishes available. I see more fishes of acceptable level at both Thong Sao (TS) and Channivet (pronounced as Changi Vet, CV) when compared to SKY. Btw, all my visits are during weekdays.

Thong Sao (TS)
-------------------
When compared to SKY and CV, the farms at TS are located further apart from one another. For newbies, just ask the tuk tuk to drop you at Thong Sao indicating to him that you want to have snake meat. Having alighted at the snake shop, spend some time walking around and you will see a few shops here and a few shops there.

Booked my first fish (19 year-old, 1.5K baht) here and was reminded of a very important lesson. Brothers, when you book a fish, look at the fish and smile. If she does not return the smile or is faking it, do not book the fish; an age-old wisdom. My first fish was literally a dead fish, cannot do this, do not want to go there, etc etc. Dismissed her in the morning (woke her up though she still wanted to sleep) and did not tip her. She did not bother to ask for it either.

Btw, some brothers may ask why I did not bother to complain to the OKT and ask for a change. While, I am there to have merry and did not pay much to book the fish. If I meet a bad one, I will just take it as bad luck rather than create a hoo-ha out of it.

Channivet (CV)
--------------------
Among the big 3 RLD, this is most out of the way, as it is quite far from Hatyai Town Center. I have come across a posting stating that CV is near Daichi Hotel. Guess the brother who posted that must have confused CV with SKY.

CV is located near Florida Hotel. One sure way of getting there is to hop onto a tuk tuk and ask him to bring you to CV. Upon arrival, pay him, locate a coffeeshop (may not be easy, as not many around there) and sit there until the tuk tuk leaves, so as to avoid paying extra when booking fishes. For brothers who want to try exploring from Florida, good luck to you because I got lost doing this, no great sense of direction on my part, I must admit.

My personal observation is that CV has the highest concentration of fish farms among the 3 RLD and the quality and quantity of fishes are better (usually) from the other 2 places. To reiterate though, it is MY PERSONAL observation and other brothers may have different views.

Booked two fishes here, one 22-year-old and the other, 19-year-old, from the following karaoke.

Hello Karaoke
62 Channivet 2
(Ah Pran, 09-7357670, Ah Ta, 01-9570571, 074-225426)
- more than 10 girls when I visited in the late morning
- paid 1500 baht, as tuk tuk left before I went into the farm

Sumitra Karaoke
15 Cahnniwet 3
(074-244116, 01-5986361)
- has the most number of quality girls of the farms that I visited
- easily more than 15 girls, many acceptable, for your viewing in the early afternoon that I visited
- price a bit higher, as tuk tuk brought me here (2.5K baht, bargained from 4K)
- btw, the ‘display area’ is not at the typical shop front, rather, there is a shop behind the shop front and the place is a display area
- highly recommended for quantity and quality of fishes though I really do not like the OKT (meaning, I recommend that you guys visit this place but I will most likely give it a miss)

SKY
-------
This is the most convenient location among the 3 big RLD, as it is nearest to the town center. Take a tuk tuk and alight at Merlin Hotel; the farms are located within 30 meters of the said hotel. If you are staying at the town center, no problem finding your way here (by walking) in say 15 minutes time. Have to admit that I was rather disappointed with the selection of fishes. Most, if not all, have fewer than 10 fishes in the late morning that I visited.

Nevertheless, I booked the best fish during my trip at one of the farms here - how ironical. The fish is a 19-year-old Chiang Mai girl, who is unable to converse in mandarin or hokkien. Though she understands a bit of English, the two of us were having hell of a time communicating. It reached the point that we have to converse by drawing. Guess this added to the fun.

The shop that I booked the fish from is 323 Karaoke (4 See Kim Yong, Soi 3, 074-232823, note the signboard at the top of the shop is in thai while the shop name is printed on the doors). This is a new establishment and hence the selection is limited. The boss is one female Thai, Ah-Na, who told me that she is getting more girls from Chiang Mai / Rai. Ah Na is able to converse in mandarin and has apparently resided in Singapore before (for an extended period). She is actually quite pretty and I like her quick quick get down to resolve business character. Was tempted to ask if she is for booking, guess would save this question for my next trip.

Anyway, on the second day that I booked the fish from Na’s farm, spent the afternoon playing bowling with her, Na and one other female. An interesting episode occurred while renting the bowling shoes. There were 4 of us and Na asked me to pay for 2 coupons. Thereafter, I got my shoe and Na got hers. Asked Na are the other 2 girls playing, she replied yes but that they intended to share the shoes to save cost. Anyway, renting a pair of shoe is only 30 baht, gave them 60 baht and asked them to get another 2 pairs. How sweet ……. Along the way, Na asked me to introduce friends to her (match make) and commented that she sleeps alone. Also asked me to bring the 19-year-old fish to Singapore so that she does not need to work. To all these questions, I remained silent, what do you expect me to say?

Had dinner at Canton Suki and adjoined to Na’s farm to have karaoke. They have this karaoke system that plays 2 songs when you put in 10 baht (coin). Had the most wonderful time that night, cleared Na’s stock of beer (8 – 10 bottles with a couple of other smaller bottles, btw, at 35 baht per bottle), and had to buy more from 7-11. There were 6 to 7 girls in the shop at night and I was the only male ‘outsider’. Best experience I had at Hatyai. At about 9pm (Thai), I took a peak at SKY Soi 3 and realized that we are the only shop still opened. Fantastic time, brothers, best.

Anyway, although I do not know Na that well (hey, met her for 1 day only), I am confident of her capability and has little doubt that she would be able to secure a good stock of fishes in the near future. As such, brothers, please pay this place a visit to check it out. And if you’re there, appreciate if you could tell Na that someone has ‘advertised’ on the internet of her shop; promised her that. Thanks in advance.

PS – my next trip would probably be a year later. Hopefully Na can still remember me as I look forward to having another ‘exclusive’ karaoke session in the fish farm. Best.

Wonderful
-------------
This ‘infamous’ place is located near Chaopraya Massage, please note that it is Chaopraya and not Chapraya 4. As I did not go in to take a look, I am unable to comment on its selection of fishes.

Part 4 of trip report (posted on ezboard on 22 May 2004)

OTHER PLACES OF INTEREST
=========================
Rather than pa powing, I fancy drinking (to get drunk), dancing and listening to good songs, in that order.

Pink Lady Sky Lounge
----------------------------
Located at Pink Lady, did not enter just took a quick look. Girls appear to be the posh and elegant type. Did not try as the manager refused to tell me the average tips given to the girls. May try this place next time I visit Hatyai.

Pink Lady Sexy Comfort (rest) Lounge
-----------------------------------------------
Located at the second floor of PL (next to the fish-tank). Beer per mug at 150 baht while girl drink at 170 baht. A large number of girls are seated at near the bar counter and you can choose one that accompany you (need to tip, not sure if they work OT). One Chivas (or Black Label) costs 1900 baht mixers free. The wine can be kept if you cannot finish it and the mixers remain free the next time you visit. I observed, however, that the amount of wine left in the bottle is much lesser than I recalled. Live band that accepts song dedication. I like this place as there are not many customers during weekday.

Pink Lady Café
--------------------
Located at the first floor of PL with live performance (singing and dancing). Something like the Singapore style of nightclub as customers may buy flowers for singers that they like. Flowers at 300 baht, 500 baht, etc. The place is not for me.

Diana PS Bowling
----------------------------
Located at Diana shopping center, 50 baht per game while shoe rental at 30 baht per pairs. Drinks at 20 baht per bottle of coke and 10 baht per bottle of mineral water. Recommended.

The Plaza
-------------
A huge local market style of place. Many different types of products on sales (food, clothing, etc). Hot and humid, crowded. Not for me.

Hatyai Garden Home Hotel – Sometimes Restaurant
----------------------------------------------------------------
A very nice place which is quite quiet during the weekday. Live band that performs quite well. Recommended.

Hansa Restaurant
---------------------
Paid 350 baht for meal and the show. The meal comprises of 1 tomyam, 1 mixed vege dish and rice. The show is fantastic, and the ah-qua are quite pretty. The manager asked me if I want to book the ah-qua. Not my cup of tea so said no. For brothers who are into this, please note the possibility.

Hollywood Disco
---------------------
Located near pink lady. Still happening, 290 baht for a jug of beer.

Paragon Disco
------------------
The newest and purportedly most happening disco in Hatyai. Near Hansa restaurant.

Sexy show at Hotel Inter
------------------------------
Bought the ticket from tour agency at 250 baht (ticket stated 400 baht). Entrance to the place is outside Hotel Inter (side of the hotel). Show starts at 2 timing, one 8.30 pm and the other, 10.30 pm (Thai – pls check timing). For the show I watched, there were 4 female performers, 2 quite pretty 2 very normal looking. Not the auntie auntie type as stated in many past literature. The girls can be booked but I did not check the rate.

Live intercourse (quite disgusting to me) and other sexy dances. Brothers, do not sit too near the stage or walkway. They drag ‘volunteers’ to help in their performance.

Re: Haadyai websites & Field Reports (FRs)

Brothers,

Hope my trip report (divided in 4 parts due restriction set by forum) is of some use to brothers of this forum. I have also posted a trip report on ezboard last year and the information is still relevant. I therefore reproduce that earlier trip report especially for the benefit of brothers who are new to H land. Btw, my next trip should be next year and will update brothers then. Best of luck 'cheonging'.

Old trip report (posted on ezboard on 6 Jul last year), part 1

Hi guys, just returned from a 6-day 5-night trip (solo and first time - Jun 2003) from Hatyai and here's the promised trip report. I must first, however, apologies for the absence of field report and the little information contained here-in. Read on and you will understand why. For experienced brothers, pls skip else risk falling asleep.

Going there

Plane ticket - bought at one of the travel agencies in Goldenmile Complex at SGD 279 net (return ticket). Pls note that some shops charge SGD 300 while others charge lower. Good to ask around first. Anyway, there are not many agencies so you can check quite quickly. No need to feel shy buying the tickets, guess the staff there are already well acquainted with cheong brothers like you and me.

Flight to / from Hatyai is only available on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. For departure on other days, you would have to rely on other means of transport (e.g. tour bus). The flight duration is about 1hr 15min. Do make allowance, as I realize that Thai airline generally does not take off on time. The plane takes off in the afternoon at 1645hrs. Thai time is one hour backward from Singapore, hence, you would arrive at about 1720hrs (give and take).

When arrived, quickly head for the immigration counter and get yourself cleared. Else, be prepared to spend 20 - 30 minutes there. From airport, you can take the taxi service to Hatyai town. It costs 240 baht per car and takes about 30 minutes. As mentioned in earlier contributions by other brothers, go straight to the local tour agencies to buy hotel vouchers. You can arrange to have the taxi wait for you while you make purchases. Just give the guy another 20 or 40 baht as tips. Save you the hassle of having to unload / reload your luggage. For this trip, I went to the infamous 'Lovely Tour'. Just tell the driver Lovely Tour and he will send you there.

Hotel selection

My criteria is simple, the hotel must be free of 'ancles / aunties / others' there to shop. Do not want my families and girlfriend to know that I have spent some time there, do I? Hence, took Hatyai Palace (also because first trip - as the hotel is near fish farms). My other option was Hatyai Garden Home, but read from past reports that must tahan the unfriendly attitude of staff.

It costs 510 baht for a night stay. The hotel is okay lah, the room size is good (bed + 2 sofa + spacious bath room + bath tub). TV has about 30 channels to choose from, including one porno channel (Taiwan – 24hrs). There is a fridge, hot water in the bath room, but no in-room safe. A good budget hotel especially for first-timer and those who want to avoid shopping crowds.

I subsequently realize that this hotel is actually not far from places such as lovely tour, oden shopping centre, pink-lady complex, etc. Take some time to explore by walking around. Of course, the alternative is to jump onto a tuk tuk for 20 baht (b/4 midnight) or 40 baht (after midnight).

Activities - massage

As I was not feeling well on the first day (temperature at 38 degree - got medical check-up at airport before taking the flight), did not do much save for a 2-hrs thai massage from the said hotel. Walk-in rate at 240baht but bought at lovely tour for 180baht. Btw, do give this particular massage place at Hatyai Palace a BIG MISS. Lousy, is a kind word to use.

For massage, Lee Garden and Hatyai Central offer good skills and comfortable environment. For both hotels, walk-in rate is at 240 baht per 2 hour. I prefer Hatyai Central to Lee Garden, simply because for Lee Garden, you have to pass by some shopping areas / hotel lift lobbies where you may meet some uncles / aunties / shopping crowd. But true as it has been commented before, Lee Garden seems to offer more young and pretty staff.

Activities – fish farms

On the second day (Tues), feeling much better, took some time to walk around the various farms located near Hatyai Palace. The rate is usually at 1.5k or 2k baht, depending on the ‘freshness’ of the fish. Farms usually open at 1000hrs and after. Go too earlier nothing to see. Once at the karaoke, the mamasan / papasan would press a bell and the girls would assemble for your viewing pleasure.

Generally, I find the selection at SKY (see kim yong, actually called Chee Kim Yong) quite limited. There are often less than 10 girls per shops. Be patient and cruel (ignoring pleas of papasan / mamasan), you would probably still find a good one considering the many shops here (more than 10). For my 6-day trip, got 2 fishes (first one for 1 day, second one for 3 days).

The first fish was taken from J K Pub (074-357979). This pub is considered relatively big and the viewing place is at second floor. The co-owner is one Ah Soon (man using walking sticks), who is a Singaporean staying at Hougang. He says that the shop has more than 20 girls though I only saw slightly more than 10 that day. Took a 19-year-old girl, a mistake, as local disco only allows people aged 20 or above.

The second fish was taken from one karaoke along soi 3. This soi also has the highest concentration of pubs / karaoke at SKY. A 23-year-old fish who has apparently been in the business for quite some time. Finally got a chance to take a fish to disco. Enjoyed her company and hence, extended her for a total of 3 bookings.

To check soi numbering, just go to the start/end of a road and look at the lamppost. Either there is a signboard or there is a marked numbering.

Always be courteous and smily, even when rejecting them. Thais are known for their hospitality and would usually reciprocate. When booking a girl, just tell the person who you want, pay the necessary amount, tell them when you want the fish to arrive, at where, then leave. Always get a name-card though I have yet got the need to use them.

At the various fish farms, the lighting is designed to enhance the beauty of the fishes and hide their imperfects. You would want to take a really good and close look at the girls, else, be prepared for a surprise when she arrives.

One trick I tried in Hatyai was to book a girl (on foot at SKY) and then get the tuk tuk to send me to various other karaoke to see see look look. Doing this means that you would have the discipline not to book a girl at the subsequent karaokes and hence, avoid paying the additional 500 baht. Went to wonderful and also one place at Thong sao (snake farm place). Was quite disappointed at wonderful, selection limited and comparable to J K Pub that I just mentioned. Uneventful at the place in Thong sao.

Re: Haadyai websites & Field Reports (FRs)

Old trip report (posted on ezboard on 6 Jul last year), part 2

Activities – eating places

Tell your fish what you want to eat and she would be the best resource person to bring you around, I guess. Else, refer to earlier guides on eating places, they are still valid. For those staying at Hatyai palace, there is one eating place nearby, quite good.

Once out of the lobby, walk to the main road (about 30 to 40 meter), turn left and walk for another 30 / 40 meter and you would not miss it. Sell Chinese food. Also, from this trip, I realize that I eat to live but not live to eat. A self-discovery trip, not bad.

Activities – discos / pubs

Kiss Channel – quite okay. A 2-story eating and drinking place. Live band, quite good atmosphere, few fishes, quite pricy (6 drinks for 1100 baht).

The Pub (think also called sugar beat). Cosy place, live bands quite good. Drinks – JWB 1200 baht ++ (about 1500 baht) in the end. Not bad but place a bit small.

Inside Hollywood – disco at pink lady hotel. Drinks for a ‘jug’ of beer at 290 baht. But do give about 20 baht as tips. Music – very similar to Malaysia disco, techno. Live performance think after 11pm. Quite okay. A lot of people and a lot of fishes.

Activities – others

Went to Songkhla Samila Beach. Book a taxi and a driver for this trip for 500 baht. The beach is quite okay. Lucky us, there was a carnival on (we call fun fare). Then went to Ko-yo island for makan. Sorry, but cannot recall how long was the trip.

Also went to a place think call Krung. Book a taxi and a driver for 24 hour for about 2300 baht (petrol inclusive). Along the way, there was a temple in cave, at Krung, went to a place for boat ride into some caves. Quite fun, highly recommended. Please approach the local tour agencies for more information. As the fish arranged for these, I do not have much information. Be warned though, the trip to Krung is 2.5 hrs to and 2.5 hrs from.

One driver to recommend. A nice, courteous and patient person. He is one Ah Loh (01-2754047). Cannot speak Hokkien well, get your fish to talk to him instead. When I was on my way back to the airport, he wanted to charge only 150 baht while others charge 200 baht (standard).

As I am not really into pa-powing so many times, what I have wanted was a fish that can bring me around to these places. Luckily the second fish I booked was also quite into traveling.

Other comments

Very different from Geylang. You are booking a fish for one full day. I doubt you can do it so many times hence, must think of other meaningful activities.

Thai girls are really very charming. Chances are you would meet someone that you may truly adore. Be careful of this. I’m not saying that it is impossible for one to develop a relationship w them but I do not think the vast majority would turn out alright.

Be generous and kind to these girls, and other siam people please.

END

Btw - it is pretty inconvenient for me to assess this forum. Brothers, if there are brothers who have queries on H land, even if directed at me, appreciate if you could help to answer them. Thanks.

Re: Haadyai websites & Field Reports (FRs)

[QUOTE=sd38]Part 2 of report (posted on ezboard on 16 May 2004)

Novotel
----------
Bought the voucher at a supposedly discounted 1050 baht, as the normal rate is about 1450 baht – stayed at this hotel for a total of 3 nights.

The advantages of staying here is the convenient location (just next to Lee Garden), good selection of TV programmes (watched NBA game five b/w LA and Spurs, also watched league of extraordinary gentlemen, the hulk, just to name a few), service is very prompt (e.g. getting adaptor for handphone charger), good security (fish has to register), a very good bed (I love the bed cover).

The disadvantages here is the hotel serves business / executive types of people, the not-so convenient lift system (have to take to 6th floor, walk across the lobby and take another set of lift to hotel room), no in-room safe, and that they do not keep your passport (unless you keep at the safety box downstairs).

RTS – maybe (if again discounted)

Hatyai Palace
----------------
I actually did not stay at this hotel this trip. But anyway, the rate I checked is at 520 baht. Despite staying at the more expensive hotel, I still prefer this one for its more than ample room size, porno channel and huge bath tub.

RTS - definitely

In Hatyai Palace, there are few rooms who are much larger but at the same rate (if I remember correctly, the room no should be X01). If you like Hatyai Palace, you could check out Merlin Hotel too. Room is slightly smaller but room newly renovated with 25" flat TV. The rate is only 500b.

WHAT TO EAT
============
After transport and accommodation, the next dish I shall serve is where to eat. How appropriate.

UFM cafe
-----------
At level 1 of Odean shopping center about 3 to 4 stores from ‘Golden City Bird Nest’. Pretty decent American breakfast at tens of baths. Took 2 dishes (as portion is small) and spent less than 100 baht. Not strongly recommended, though.

Wanton Noodle
-------------------
Interestingly, I noticed that the wanton noodle served in Hatyai tastes better than that served in Singapore / Malaysia. Btw, I am referring specifically to the noodle itself. Their pork slices, wanton and vegetable still have much rooms for improvement. One good place to have the noddle is near SGV. Walk across the road from SGV, turn and face SGV, then turn left walk about 10 to 20 meters, turn left and you will see a shop in a small alley. The small alley is facing Porsche club (a nightspot, never been in there so don’t ask, hee hee). The shop starts later in the morning and does not apparently cater to breakfast crowd. Recommended.

Fuji Japanese Restaurant
------------------------------
This is a chain of jap food restaurant that is also available in Bangkok and would not be unfamiliar to some of you. Pretty decent jap food at a cheaper price than Singapore. Took 1 set, 1 ice-cream and 1 drink and paid less than 300 baht. However, I realize than the standard of food can be quite inconsistent and the food tasted so-so during my second visit. Forgot to state, said place is at B1 of Lee Garden. Recommended.

Westside Saloon
--------------------
This is a pub but it serves food bought from nearby eatery. Meaning, it would cost more to have your meal there than if you have it at the source. Anyway, unable to ascertain the source of food. Strongly recommended (for the taste and place, not the price).

The people there can speak a bit of English. Said pub is for people who likes blue and country type of music. Quite a good mix of farang, MY/SG, and local executive type of people. The food is good, fantastic in fact. Got a mixed seafood salad (x 2) and a basket of fried herbal chicken. Kind of expensive though as w/o drink the 3 dishes come up to 455 baht. The band is supposed to start at 2030hrs (Thai) but as all other bands in Thailand, give them an extra 20 minutes for preparation.

How to go there – get tuk tuk. Else, their location is clearly stated in the tourist map. This place is also near Zuru and Latin pub (pai say, both me also never go).

Thongsao Snake Food
----------------------------
Good to visit this place as it is near some fish farms. Anyway, the snake meat in herbal soup costs 150 baht. Whoever told me that snake taste much better than chicken and frog leg, I beg to differ. Return to eat, no way.

Did you tried the snake blood and penis? hehehe I always recommend to try this.

Diana Food Court
----------------------
At basement, reasonably priced working on coupon system (i.e. you change 100 baht to coupon, buy using coupon, unused coupon can be changed back into money). Took the Thai fried kwey teo (40 baht) and mineral water (10 baht). Recommended.

Bueng Thong
----------------
This is an eatery that surrounds a supposedly fish pond. It is quite out of way and tutu for 2 persons cost 40 baht (before midnight). This is not a very tourist place as I saw much more locals than foreigners here. Operation hours from 0900hrs to midnight (Thai), but suggest you avoid lunch time due to the heat. At night, there are mosquitoes so bear with it.

A word of warning, this place cooks like no tomorrow in terms of their usage of pepper. My god, cannot take it. Service is good and prompt. Ordered 4 dishes, 1 some Thai pork, 1 steamed fish, 1 mixed vege and 1 tong hu with prawns, plus 1 coke and 1 bottle of bear. Price => 635 baht. Return to eat, very unlikely.

To travel to this place, again take the tourism map and refer tutu to the advertisement. Recommended only if you have never been there before.

MK
----
Situated at Robinson shopping center. Need I say more about this steamboat place, which is also available here in Singapore. Cost about 400 baht to feed 2 persons. Strongly recommended.

Canton Suki
---------------
Another steamboat place but located at Diana 1st level. The soup base is much better than that in MK and I would rather eat here than there. Bill for 4 persons (with desserts) at 612 baht. Strongly recommended.

Hai Q
-------
I am not sure if I got the same place as stated in the dummy guard. The people seems to refer to this place as Hai Keong rather than Hai Q. Saw quite a number of cheong brothers hence assume is the same place. Spoke to the fish I booked and she told the tutu to come here. There is a display area of the seafood where you order the food before retuning to the table. I don’t like the food cause there are too much garlic used. About 400 bahts for 2 persons, including vege, prawns, some salad, big head, etc. Recommended (saw a lot of cheong brothers, hence, next time try other dishes and see if I like it).

KFC / Mac
--------------
If possible, do not go to these places as the cost is similar or even higher than that in Singapore. I went to try to see if there are differences between there and SG. Indeed, there are, but to each his own.

Bah Kut Teh Store (beside Lovely tour)
------------------------------------------------
This place opens very early (though unable to ascertain exact timing). Serves not only BKT but also wanton noodle and chicken rice. BKT – not my type as too bitter, the wanton noodle is okay as I still prefer the one near SGV.

The best is half boiled eggs, which are served in something like a ‘shot glass’. Costs about SG2 to SG4 for a good breakfast.

The half boil egg there is a must try item, from farm chicken. 2 good Bak Kut Teh is near Merlin Hotel.

Roti Prata
------------
Taste very different and served in cut pieces. I would stick to those in Singapore and Malaysia. A few places serving this dish, walk around and you will see (near the golden 3 – Lee Garden, etc).

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL TO HATYAI NOW
==================================
Guess this is the topmost question that brothers contemplating a trip are asking themselves. On my way there (via Penang), the cab driver warned me vehemently against going there and painted a very bleak picture. Some folks in Hatyai that I met during the trip also expressed fear of the unrest, though they are the minority (hey – most want business instead of scaring people off, so what do we expect them to say anyway).

My take – I think it is pretty safe at Hatyai now. I cannot guarantee that nothing will happen to anyone who goes there, who knows, right? But I do feel safe, travel within Hatyai as per my last trip (save for traveling out of Hatyai). You make the call. Anyway, the unrest did affect the business as several persons I met commented on the drop in customers. But I still see quite a lot of brothers and other tourists. If given a chance to travel there again tomorrow, I would still go. That’s my stand.

I just got back 2 days back too, Hdy is a bit more quiet now comparing to peaceful time. On supposely busy Sat evening, still pretty much quality stock left and more to be spotted hunting at both Paragon and Hollywood disco. Crowd in eatery places are also seems lesser.

Beside this, did not noticed much other difference. I still roam around Lee Garden and walk back to hotel at wee hours at disco and supper, feeling as safe as usual. Did not venture out of Hdy, so dunno the actual situation in Yala and Songkhla.

WAYS TO GO TO HATYAI
=====================
My latest trip is the second trip that I have made to Hatyai. I’ve tried the direct flight (TG), flight via Penang (Air Asia) and bus (grassland). My preferred choice is definitely the bus. Read on to know why:

Direct flight (TG)
---------------------
It’s about SG 300 for a direct flight on Thai air to Hatyai (include both airport taxes). For a one-week vacation, the most ideal is to fly on Monday (about 5pm SG time) and return on Sat (also about 5pm – timing will change, please check with your agent). The flight takes about an hour and it takes a further less than an hour to reach Hatyai town from the airport. I find the timing awkward and the cost not-value-for-money.

Flight via Penang (Air Asia)
----------------------------------
Flight to Penang via Air Asia is available everyday. From Johor to Senai airport is about 45 minutes, but do cater for a larger allowance if you are taking the flight on a weekday as Senai is located at Industrial estates (only of course, if your flight coincides with the rush hours). The flight from Johor to Penang is about an hour and 10 minutes, trip from Penang airport to Kayu Hitam (border b/w Thai and Malaysia) is about 2 hours (1.5 – 2) and the trip from Kayu Hitam to Hatyai is about an hour (give and take a quarter of an hour).

From JB to Senai airport – cab fare is about RM 30 – 35. Flight costs about RM 130. Airport limousine to Kayu Hitam is at RM 180 (note – you can choose to take mini-van at much cheaper rate) and from Kayu Hitam (actually from Chenglun) to Hatyai is about RM 54. All in all, a very troublesome way to travel unless you have friends in Penang traveling to Hatyai with you in a car. Else, a no no for me in future.

Btw, the flight was delayed for 1 and a half hour. I understand from the cab driver in Penang that it is pretty common for Air Asia flight to be delayed. That the situation is much better now (as delay less than 2 hours) than before. Unable to ascertain the accuracy of his statement, though.

[color=blue]This is almost like an amazing race where you got change different mode of transportation several times before reaching destination,

Bus (Grassland)
-------------------
Considering the hassle involved, I bought a Grassland ticket for the trip back to Singapore at 580 baht (single seat for me) and forfeited my return air asia ticket. The bus is scheduled to depart at 1330hrs (Thai time) and passengers are to report to Lovely Tour before that. Do not assemble there too early, though, as you’ll end up standing or squeezing with strangers on the seats available at that agency while waiting for the bus. I think the most ideal timing is to arrive at 1325hrs (Thai). You have to hand your passport to the so-called ‘tour guide’, who will ensure that all necessary embarkation cards are in order. Your passport will be returned to you when you board the bus. After you board the bus, get your ticket ready as someone will go around and collect them. You will be given a bottle of mineral water (btw, I got two, special treatment – yeh). The tour guide will accompany the trip and you can ask her questions if there are any. There are two drivers, there is no need to tip any of the 3 persons.

The bus I took departed at near 1400hrs (Thai) which is about 1500hrs (SG/MY). I departed from Woodland checkpoint at about 0300hrs (SG/MY) though the estimated arrival time at Goldenmile is supposed to be 0500hrs (SG/MY). Anyway, the point is, the bus trip took about 12 – 13 hours, instead of the widely believed 16 – 17 hours.

There are about 4 to 5 stops along the way, every 2 to 3 hours. You get to eat and do your business in about half an hour time per stop; more than sufficient time for me. Watched two movies on board the bus, the first – the eye 2 and the second – taking lives.

Before departing, you are asked if you want to alight at Woodland or Goldenmile. If you choose the former, after clearing the custom, just walk straight to Woodland center w/o returning to the bus.

One last thing, you can pay about 3 Baht to enter a toilet at the Thai checkpoint. Skip this as more toilet breaks coming up in the next half an hour. You can even skip the one at the Malaysian checkpoint as the first ‘makan’ break is just a couple of minutes (or 10s of minutes) later.

To sum up, this is cost effective and it took a shorter time than I thought it would. Furthermore, I am a bus person and the seat is very comfortable (24 seaters). If I were to travel to Hatyai again, this is my most preferred choice. It wins hands down.

Btw, for the uninitiated, bus from Singapore leaves in the evening time and I think you are to assemble at Goldenmile at 1800hrs. Please confirm with your agent though.

Also – Grassland should be the better choice among the many other buses from H to SG. I bought the ticket from another tour agency (not lovely tour) who told me that people did commented that the seats are better etc etc etc. I think they are not lying as they apparently earn less selling Grassland ticket than other types.

Taking coach on returning is a good way for you to recover where you could sleep all the way back to Spore, a good 12 hours rest. So, by the time you reach Spore, you should be pretty much recharged. But taking coach on your way to Hdy is a different story, especially those who cant sleep well in bus.

Traveling within Hatyai
-------------------
Tutu for one person during normal hours is 20 baht. For more than 1 person, 10 baht per person. After midnight costs double. Certain places, as quite out of way, would cost more. Always confirm the price before boarding one.

The motorcycle taxi also costs 20 baht per person (they can only take 1 person). Unlike Phuket, Hatyai has fewer bumps and ‘hill’s and hence, much safer when opting for this mode of transportation. I simply love the feeling of ‘freedom’. For bigger sized brothers, look for a rider who is also bigger sized. Safer.

Bike taxi travelling within city should be 10b, unless you are moving out of city.

WHERE TO STAY
===============
I actually set out to stay at different hotels throughout this trip. However, ended up only staying at 4 different hotels as I stayed in the last hotel for 3 nights. Btw, for this portion, RTS means retain to stay and the price does not include breakfast.

Sakura Grandview (SGV)
-------------------------------
The first hotel I stayed is SGV, a preferred choice apparently among many brothers of this forum. Paid 880 baht (higher than the 820 baht stated in the forum) and got a room at the highest floor (16), nice view.

The advantages are in-room safe, not many family / uncles / aunties type, good massage, bellboy with contact (for newer brothers), okay selection of TV programmes and big bed.

The disadvantages are only 2 lifts to serve the 16-storey building, bath tub is beyond small and soundproofing suspected. The last point deserves further elaboration, you see, I woke up at 0400hrs (Thai) due to interesting noises from my neighboring unit. Brothers, you want to do it, please ask your fish to keep the noise level down especially at such ungodly hours (just kidding). Should have continued to listen and maybe cheer them on but was too tired and went back to sleep.

RTS – maybe (unlikely as the hotel does not seems to click with me)

Diamond Hotel
-------------------
Paid 860 baht to stay at this pretty old hotel. The advantages include a most convenient location (near Lee Garden when compared to SGV), in-room safe and not many family / uncles / aunties types. The disadvantages are it is an old hotel, lousy restroom, no soundproofing when walking along the corridor and the bed is small.

RTS – you must be kidding

BP Grand Suite
-------------------
This is a 7-story building filled with junior suites and I paid 980 baht for a night stay. One lift serves all 7 storey, there is no in-room safe, remote controller (TV) is built into the side table, while the bath tub is small the restroom is well done.

RTS – maybe (very unlikely, not value for money)

Beware that the tuk tuk will ask for tips even though they earn commissions from the booking...

So dun ask a tuk-tuk to take you directly to any joint. Just ask them to take you to a general place, Thong Sao for instance, and walk around there. Even if they dun ask from you, the tips for them will be thrown into the charges for the puying by the mamasan.

I think the best place to walk around is near Ambassador hotel or phiphat pakdee road (the road in which is by the side of chamois member club)..
It is near S.K. Stardust hotel.. this 2 place had quite a chain of farms..

hehe.. but no point to me as I always tag along with by tirak.. always pass by this 2 place and saw quite a number fish there sitting outside chatting or trying to attract customers.. if you have a friend there, it 's better to ride a bike around to check out the place there..

Re: Haadyai websites & Field Reports (FRs)

Thumbs up to SD38 and MrDevil for their detailed insights into H city.

I also feel its pretty safe to stay over in H city.

I think my next trip, I will stay in Hatyai Palace. Sounds good. I stayed in Merlin Hotel in my previous trip which is about 3 weeks ago. Rooms in Merlin still looks a bit run down IMO.

I think I should be going again pretty soon, 4D3N this time round. Hmmm...., this time round, need to look for a seafood restaurant that is affordable, and having a good ambience.

One question though...., I think its a silly one but I need to ask. Over in H City, where can I eat roast pig? I do not seem to see it around...
