Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews - Dull Life in Shanghai

Dear all bros,
Wondering anyone of u here in Shanghai ever felt before, maybe at least once the routine life u r facing, going thru is getting to u, making u feel real shitty? I mean as in 'bites' into u, making u feeling lousy, agitated even the minute u open your eyes in the morning? Have been having this lousy feeling for the past 1 year+. Keep asking myself many atimes how long will I last here......but there again, with the economy still in pretty bad shape back home, got nowhere else to explore further other than the 'Great Orient Dragon Land', filled with 'opportunities....sigh...
How I really wish to able to go somewhere as prosperous as China.....
I guessed staying in a place too long really makes one feel very sick....

Nowadays, really lost all drive & motivation in most routine, usual life activities.....just wondering how long do I have to stay here......sigh....

Dear Bro SGP,

Granted that opportunities are abound, but in this competitive world, you need to search and go for them. I think we will do ourselves a deservice if we stay un-motivated in our own small dreamland.

I remember when I was first in Shanghai, tried to start somethings, but I hit my head against so many walls. Was I de-moralised? Of course not! Or I would not be able to stay in China for the past more than 10 years. I never take failures as fades! I would face them with the strongest determination if I feel that there are opportunities. There were a few times, I stayed in some places in China for more than a month achieving really nothing. I told myself that I have learnt a great deal in the process. The situation ahs proven me right, some of the knowledge gained is useful to what I am doing now!

It is not wrong to feel demoralised or lose motivation after staying in a place for too long. I have different thinking. To do something concrete, it takes time, and we must know there are phases. Please allow me to share with you my humble view:

Phase I: Feasibility studies and Opportunity Seeking.
Phase II: Identification of target and works towards it.
Phase III: Work on your target and sail wisely with plan modification if necessary.
Phase IV: After a while, this is where we should all do - Consolidation
Phase V: Future Plan

I am assuming that your project on the target works fine of course. What I want to emphasize is Phase IV - Consolidation. It is the stage of reflection, take stock, further planning. I find that many people find life bored after having spent too much time in a place. If you feel this way now, then go on to Phase IV. You will see the difference.

My 2 cent worth.

The above works fine with me, and I cannot assure you that it works for you. Nevertheless, if you go along the same line of though, I think you will feel different, at least.

With best regards and Good Luck!

PTR

Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews

Greetings to all survivors of the Shanghai jungle. I would like to seek some advice from all of you as I might be going to Shanghai to start a new job. I will also be doing my own research but would like for the samsters here to give me some highlights.

Where is a good location for an expatriate to stay - up market? Is condo or villa better? What are the things to look out for in looking for housing? How much is a housemaid, driver and a language teacher as I am not very strong in Mandarin?

Thanking in advance all that help.

Hi there greatnyc,
Before anyone could assist you (and to avoid being on the receiving end of fireballs or replies like "please read the posts" etc.. hehhehe), I suppose you'll need to be more specific in your requests.. For example, while you're looking for Condos or Villas in a more up market area, it would help if you could give a rough estimate of your housing budget. Only then can the ever so helpful bros point you in the right direction.

As for housemaids, I would suggest you also list down your requirements.. like part-time or full-time, just cleaning or includes cooking, young or old etc.. this will enable bros to recommend known housemaids that can be trusted and fit your requirements..

Drivers, well, again, it depends on whether you need drivers with cars or just a driver to drive you around in your company car. Also, just working hours or 24/7?

For the language teacher.. well.. this will be entirely up to you.. depends on whether you want just language exchange or anything else.. hahahaha..

Do let the veterans know more so that they can help you with whatever information they have..

Cheerio~!

Hi Bro greatnyc,

As I heard , they are going to start the next survivor TV series in Shanghai...Called Survivor Shanghai... competitor will out bid, out last each other in KTV session, setup camp next to the Huang pu river ( dining at Paulaner) , dress in bikinis and walk about the bund and try their best to out scheme the local Shanghinese....

Suggest you stay in a service apartment or hotel first before choosing where you want to setup house. Sometimes what you see in photos just does not show the dumpsite next to it....

Also one suggestion on the housemaid/driver and language teacher......try to get a 3 n 1 solution...a person who cooks and does house keeping work , drives you to work and teaches you Mandarin along the way.... and as bro Shanghaitan .... hints.... maybe other services as well.....

On a more serious note, a budget and location where you work will be a helpful piece of information to have before we can dispense any worthwhile suggestion, are you alone or with your family? schooling for kids should then be considered. Most employers will also provide some basic guidelines of where to stay for new employees ( unless you the boss...then) , so ask HR first for assistance.

anyways...welcome to Shanghai

cheers

shanghian

Smile Re: Shanghai "In Conversation" Views, News & Reviews

Thank you all for the advice.

I will definitely surf asiaxpat.com for more info.

I believe I will be staying at a service apartment first before sourcing out a permanent place. Things are still at a blur - I apologize as this opportunity to move to Shanghai just came up. It has not even sink in yet but I would like to do as much research as I possibly can before jumping ship.

As for more details - Housing budget ~ US$6.5k a mth; I will be provided with a company car, not so sure abt driver yet but yes, I do need a driver 24/7, a housemaid to cook and clean the place, and a mandarin language teacher to improve my mandarin standard. I will not be bringing my wife and daugther at all as it is a regional job and I will be travelling more than 50% of the time across Asia.

I do hope to see all of you there when I'm there. Again, thanks for your help.

Dear Bro greatnyc,
For starters, at US$6.5K, you can probably get a very big house.. but since your wife and daughter will not be here plus you'll not be around most of the time due to your business travel.. do you really want to get that? It's up to you entirely.. if not, you can always stay long-term in a serviced apartment that provides house keeping services anyway.. all you need to settle would be your food..

As for the driver, it will not be too difficult to find.. at the right price, you should be able to get a very experienced one..

Lauguage teacher, I would agree with the veterans here that you should be able to find in AsiaXpat..

Hope you have a good stay in Shanghai..

Cheerio~!
