Re: Chiangmai

The reason why they don't serve thais...
This is what my girl in Foxy Lady told me: thais usually won't go for ST or LT.
This is what I observed in Star 6: a group of 3 thai guys were sitting next to me. They were just there to drink and watch. No ladies sit with them. And this is not the 1st time I observed this. Previous times I've been there I observed the same thing. I have seen some thais (who look older and richer) who do sit with ladies. But they're quite rare. So, if u were the girls, u would rather not waste time on a small fish, right?

H-suru: u must have looked quite young?

Re: Chiangmai

Hi Bros KatoeyLover & Jazzem, thx for the answers! Yeah, maybe I looked quite young in that outfit. hahaha...

Actually I was quite amazed at this phenomenon because what I have been through in Japan was exactly the opposite--you would not be served if you look foreign! Some entertainment places are even out-of-bounds to foreigners, no matter how much you are willing to spend.

Anyway, I won't make the same mistake again.

Cold weather sets in over most of country

Report from The Nation dated Monday 18 December 2006 :-

Cold weather sets in over most of country

Despite arriving late, cold weather has started to hit northern provinces.

The Meteorological Department warned that an intense high pressure ridge had extended to cover upper Thailand. Cold weather and winds are expected in the North, Northeast, Central and East regions until Wednes
day.

Sixteen districts and two sub-districts of Chiang Rai and some districts in Chiang Mai have been declared as disaster areas after a third day of temperatures below 15 degrees centigrade.

In upland areas such as Mae Sai, Mae Chan, Phan, Thoeng, Wiang Pa Pao, Mae Fa Luang and Wiang Kaen, temperatures below 5 degrees have been recorded at night.

More than 146,700 people, mostly living on the top of mountains, have been facing cold conditions. Chiang Rai's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office estimates that 140,000 people lack suitable clothing to cope with the cold. The province approved a budget of Bt300,000 for the distribution of clothes and medicines to affected people. Centres have been established in several districts to receive donations of warm clothing and blankets.

Santhanee Chaichiangpin, Chiang Mai's Meteorological Officer, said a mass of cold air covering the upper North had caused temperatures keep dropping.

Muang district was covered by fog yesterday while the temperature dropped to only 14-15C.

Frost has occurred on Doi Inthanon, the country's highest peak, where the temperature has been under 5C. Frost is regarded as a phenomenon by people living in the sub-tropical lowlands.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department also warned about the El Nino phenomenon, which has caused surface temperatures in the middle and eastern parts of the Pacific Ocean to increase by more than 1-2 degrees in the past month.

It said El Nino would cause unusually high temperatures in Thailand during winter and summer as well as a little rainfall.

Chiang Rai declared a disaster area as temperatures plummet

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 19 December 2006 :-

Chiang Rai declared a disaster area as temperatures plummet

Plunging temperatures have prompted local authorities in Chiang Rai to declare the province a disaster area.

They also appealed for relief aid from relevant agencies and the public.

Kittirat Sornsue, chief of the Chiang Rai provincial office of disaster prevention and mitigation, said hundreds of thousands of Chiang Rai residents are in need of blankets and warm clothes.

Up to 150,000 blankets and 800,000 items of warm clothing are needed.

"The Chiang Rai governor has also sought an additional budget in order to help those residents in need of assistance," said Mr Kittirat.

Temperatures in Chiang Rai have dropped and will continue to do so until Jan 20, he said.

Yesterday morning, the temperature was measured at 12.7 degrees Celsius in the town of Chiang Rai and 9 degrees at Doi Tung mountain, said Mr Kittirat.

With a low pressure ridge moving down from China, the Meteorological Department has warned residents in the northern region to be prepared for lower temperatures of between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius this week. There will also be a wind chill factor in the region.

Besides the North, the temperature is expected to drop by between one and three degrees Celsius in every region except the South from Dec 18 to 22.

Down south, the northeastern monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea is still strong, causing between two- and four-metre waves in the Gulf and between two- and three-metre waves in the Andaman. Small boats should not sail in the Gulf of Thailand, the department warned.

Northern mountaintop temperatures drop to 0-3 degrees

Report from The Nation dated Sunday 24 December 2006 :-

Northern mountaintop temperatures drop to 0-3 degrees

The Meteorological Department announced that the temperatures at the mountaintops in northern provinces dropped to between 0 to 3 Celsius degrees Saturday morning.

It said in a press release that the mercury dropped to about 0 to 3 degrees over the mountains in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan and Prae.

The temperatures in the lowland areas of the northern provinces were measured about 7 to 8 degrees, the statement said.

The department said the low temperature was influenced by a high pressure ridge, which is passing over the northern and northeastern regions.

All roads lead North

Report from The Nation dated Sunday 24 December 2006 :-

All roads lead North

Tourists heading for the (almost) frozen North this month may well face a crush

Are you thinking of spending the New Year's holidays and celebrating the countdown in the cold climate of the North? Better plan well in advance, as you will be joined by millions more visitors than in previous years.

The Flora Expo and chillier weather will induce people to head north more than the previous year, especially during the 10-day period from December 27to January 5, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Over-crowded conditions are expected in the most popular destinations, especially the highland attractions of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son. Tourism officials of the three provinces confirmed that tourist figures would be much higher this year.

In Chiang Mai alone, arrivals will reach a record 4.5 million, said Junnapong Saranak, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Region 1.

In Chiang Rai, the figure is estimated at 1.3 million, around 10 per cent up from last year, TAT official Tanyapa Nikrothanont said.

Mae Hong Son expects to draw 6 per cent more visitors than last year, local tourist official Wisut Buachum said.

"There should be no problem if tourists are spread among sites. The problem is at popular destinations that many want to visit at the same time," Junnapong said.

Doi Inthanon is the best example.

"Everyone needs to reach the highest peak in Thailand, the summit of Doi Inthanon. Many of them plan to get a glimpse of the frost. Last year saw heavy traffic, but this year will be a lot worse," said Anan Sorn-ngai, superintendent of Doi Inthanon National Park.

"From November up to this week, visitor counts have already doubled since last year, so we plan to ban parking at the peak. All cars must stop at the staging centre," he said.

"That is already exceeding our capacity. Normally the park can accommodate 5,000 tourists per day, and 12,000 have shown up on New Year's Eve before now. This year we forecast 18,000 a day," he said.

The increasing influx of tourists has led the park to launch a special management system for visitors on New Year's Eve. Besides banning parking at its summit the measures include inducing tourists to spend their time viewing waterfalls, hiking natural trails, visiting tribal villages, observing royal projects and trying other nearby destinations while waiting for a place in the queue to experience the pinnacle of Thailand.

"Our officials will advise all motorists entering the park how to drive and where to stop or park," Anan said.

The best way to check the turnout at Doi Inthanon is to click on www.doiinthanon.com for online reports on the latest conditions, Anan said.

"We have officials stationed at popular sites in the park, and we will report real time both traffic and other necessary information like weather and alternative stops. Everything will be available 24 hours a day," said Issara Sirisaiyas of the Thailand Research Fund (TRF), who developed the website for the park.

"Visitors can also check the light version of this website on their mobile phones," he said.

"We hope it will help tourists to plan better before deciding to visit Doi Inthanon. In previous years, most visitors just drove up without advance planning. It should be different this year. We also asked over 200 tour-operators in Chiang Mai to check our website before submitting group bookings here," Anan added.

Tanyapa said such problems should not arise in Chiang Rai as tourists generally fanned out over various destinations in the northernmost province.

"We have also convinced tourists to not flock to particular sites at the same time by promoting different routes like the three mountain trails and the tulip road to Doi Pha Moen in Thoeng district," she said.

The mountain trails go to Cheefah, Kha and Langka in Chiang Rai, Nan and Phayao.

In Mae Hong Son, this year's top destinations will be Pai, Muang and Khun Yuam districts, Wisut said.

Pai is expected to face overcrowding in its small area, but local authorities will hopefully be able to handle it, he said.

"Booking hotels in advance is my recommendation, except if you plan to camp. Check the latest situation in each destination in Mae Hong Son at www.travelmaehongson.org before planning your long holiday," he said.

According to the Thai Hotel Association, only 11 of 36 major hotels in Chiang Mai still had vacancies yesterday while in Chiang Rai only one out of nine hotels was still taking bookings.

"If you have friends or relatives, I recommend that you stay with them. Over 90 per cent of hotels in Chiang Mai are booked. For those who plan to visit the Flora Expo and don't have tickets yet, only 5,000 tickets will be available at booths each morning in front of the expo. and most of them will be sold out in several hours," Junnapong said.

For the countdown, most northern provinces have prepared special events at popular locations. Mae Hong Son is ushering in the New Year at Norng Jongkham in Muang district, Chiang Rai's countdown is at the Thai-Burmese border in Mae Sai, and Chiang Mai is partying till dawn at Tha Phae Gate.

"Chiang Mai's countdown will be televised nationwide via a global network from 10pm to 10 minutes past midnight. There will be a giant screen at the gate showing the countdown atmosphere in major provinces for those who attend the event," Junnapong said.

The cold snap in the North which started this week will last until the middle of February, the Meteorological Department said.

"This will be a major magnet for tourists apart from the Flora Expo, which welcomed its two-millionth visitor last Friday," Junnapong said.

Hi,

Would like to go to chiangmai in a few months for a few days holiday, intend to stay at the riverside. I know theres quite a bit of action at night in the form of bar girls and freelancers. I realize in the day theres not much recommendations except for body massage at Sayuri. Any experienced guys have anything else to reccomend as alternative. Like bangkok style massage parlours with body massage or lotion massage(with extras). Thanks in advance for any info from the regulars.

Hi Bro,

I have been to CM for a few times, i was there to embrace the new year 2007. A good & relatively reasonable price Thai & Chinese food eaty just opposite the CM plaza hotel exist or just a row of shop houses away facing a Fuji Film development shop. It situated on the extreme right of the same row of shops if you are standing infront of Jia Tong Heng. The owner of the shop is a Thai Teo Chew madam whom can speak Teo Chew, & of course her son & daughter can speak English. A lot of CM residents & other provines thai visit this eaty joint. In my opinion, their fried egg & mango rice are superb however, the available of mango rice is only after the haverst of mango season. The kway teow, fried rice ,ice dessert & noodle not bad either.

If you intend to experience something unique by having hot porridge & pig organ soup at the dawn hour during winter. You should try this mobile hawker just exactly outside the night bazzar place hotel located at the Changklan rd, the popular street of CM night bazzar. The price is cheap, for a bowl of meat porridge is 30Bath & for the same price for soup as well. At the same time, you can also try the tradition thai coffee & sweet bread (Both are sweet after prepared by the stall owner) It's delicious & cheap as well.

If you are paying the similar hotel rate, I would advise to stay ay Central Doudatwang (under hotel plaza group). In comparsion, the later is better interm of facilities, delicious breakfast, ideal location, with disco(Horizon), & of course if you have happening,it's more easy to bring your partner back to the room compare with CM plaza. The only down side is the hotel lift is rather slow.

Hope it helps all brothers who wish to visit CM. It's still winter now, travel there before the 2nd week of Feb, you still can enjoy the cooling weather & the price is definitely cheaper for air fare & hotel. Cheers.
