If your friend enjoys jazz & blues I would not recommend Real Love or Rojam. Music there is more dance/techno with quite young crowd.
Cotton club used to be the best jazz club in town. You could try it:

Adress: 淮海中路1416号 (huai hai zhong rd/Fuxing Xi rd).
