I am not a prayer whisperer but this is like a Doctor and Patient relationship.

When we are sick, we cannot ask someone to consult the doctor on our behalf cos the doctor treating the patient must know what the sickness is, and what's the fundamental cause of the sickness. If there is a cause, then there must be a way to cure and remove the cause. Once the cause is removed, the sickness will automatically be removed.

1st scenario: A doctor gives a prescription for medicine to a patient. The patient goes home, and out of great faith in her doctor, she recites the prescription every day without taking the medicine.

2nd scenario: Not satisfied with that, the patient returns to the doctor, and demands and receives an explanation of the prescription, why it is necessary and how it will work. Again, she recites the prescription every day without taking the medicine

3rd scenario: Finally the patient takes the medicine; only then is her disease eradicated.

The benefit comes only from the 3rd scenario (at the experience level) cos we cannot expect great reward without having sincere focus in prayer. There are some things we can do outside of prayer to raise our good karma I/R:

1) Control or limit outside disturbances

2) As advised by Bro georgemagnum below: Increase your good deeds and decrease your bad deeds.
