Sorry to say but you sound like newbie. There scams every where when it comes to mongering. But the grift you ran into is something a mongerers with more experience can easily avoid or navigate.

As long you check in together and she is not a local citizen is fine or the hotel is guest friendly if she did not check in together

One of the hotels I stayed got put a notice at the counter (i got take a photo of it but too big to upload, lazy to adjust)
