Re: S'poreans in JB
In fact the EDL (eastern dispersal link) highway is designed for vehicles to travel from JB custom to the north south highway with many exits along the way.
If you drive in JB you will notice that the starting point of the EDL highway is at the JB custom, even from the city area is not able to access directly to the EDL. Therefore the EDL highway is built for the convenience of the vehicle at the custom to other parts of JB. So it is fair to charge the toll fee at the JB custom and not along the EDL highway. (although vehicle can use the EDL highway midway free of charge) There is no free lunch in this world, if the 8km-long EDL can really shorten travelling time, it is reasonable to impose toll charges on users. Hopefully the msia govt maintain the rm16.50 toll charge so that spore side can follow suit. Lagi better if both side can increase somemore. There is also another thing which both side need to consider is that motorcycles who enter and leave JB are free presently. Imagine if there are ten to twenty thousand of motorcycle crossing the causeway during the peak hours, for sure it will cause jam. Therefore both side should consider implementing toll fee for motorcycles too to control the traffic condition at the causeway. Lagi better if msia side can implement VEP fee for spore motorcycles at the end of year too... |

Malaysia to study toll hikes impact
Report from The STAR dated 7 August 2014 :-
Malaysia to study toll hikes impact PUTRAJAYA - The Works Ministry is expected to look into the concerns raised by those affected by the new toll rates. "They (the Works Ministry) are also gathering more information from other (Johor) wakil rakyat over the hue and cry of the local people. "It is up to the minister in charge to announce these," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong. MCA had also voiced concerns over the impact of the new toll on small and medium enterprises and Malaysians who commute daily to Singapore via the expressway. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has raised this matter in the Cabinet meeting yesterday alongside Dr Wee. Dr Wee said the concerns were discussed at the meeting and that the Works Ministry was expected to conduct a study on the matter. "The Works Minister (Datuk Fadillah Yusof) has explained that it is too costly to take over this highway without any charge. That is why they have to impose the toll," Dr Wee said in his office after the Cabinet meeting yesterday. Last Friday, a group of factory bus drivers staged a blockade at the entrance to the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in protest of the new toll. The toll, which came into effect on Aug 1,2014 is collected within the CIQ for the maintenance and building cost of the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) and other CIQ-related facilities. The EDL is an 8.1km expressway that connects the end of the North-South Expressway (NSE) at the Pandan Interchange to the CIQ complex in Bangunan Sultan Iskandar. ------ KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Malaysian VEP unlikely to affect foreign investments in Iskandar Malaysia
Report from The New Straits Times (Malaysia) dated 7 August 2014 :-
Malaysian VEP unlikely to affect foreign investments in Iskandar Malaysia NUSAJAYA: The decision to impose a vehicle entry permit (VEP) fee on Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia via Johor Baharu will not likely affect foreign investments in Iskandar Malaysia, said Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) chief executive Datuk Ismail Ibrahim. He said as Singapore, being one of the largest investors in Iskandar Malaysia with a total investment of RM11 billion, had also imposed the VEP, it would understand its rationale. “We have not receive any negative statements or opinions from investors on VEP. We are looking at long-term efforts to develop Iskandar Malaysia with an influx of foreign investors. “Foreign investors are undeterred by VEP. We do not expect any investors to withdraw over VEP, instead they are here for the long haul. They have not said VEP is detrimental (to investment),” he told reporters at an Aidilfitri open house hosted by IRDA at Pinewood Studios here today. Ismail said only those, who ventured into short-term investments, might feel that that the VEP would pose a problem to them. The VEP is said to be implemented by the year end, although the details are still under discussion. On July 1, Singapore’s Land Transport Authority announced that it would raise the VEP and goods vehicle permit fees for foreign-registered vehicles coming into Singapore. From last Friday, drivers of foreign-registered cars will have to pay $35 for a daily permit, up from $20. Drivers of goods vehicles will pay $40 for a monthly permit, four times more than $10 now. – BERNAMA ------ KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Re: S'poreans in JB
Many Sporeans own property, businesses, and factories in JB. Since Iskandar authority has commented that Malaysian VEP unlikely to affect foreign investments, the work ministry will most likely stick to the formal plan of rm50 VEP and rm16.50 Toll charges.
There are some investors of iskandar are less concerned about the toll and VEP since most of them only buy properties (residential, commercial or industrial) and rented them out and hardly commute to johor bahru. In fact rite now there are a sizable minority group of sporean investors who buy JB residential property for their own stay. They are sporean who decided to rent out their hdb flat or condo in spore and stay in JB iskandar homes, travel to singapore for work, and then back to JB after work on a daily basis. This group of sporean will suffer alot similiar to the msian who drive msia cars to spore to work as they need to pay for Toll and VEP charges on both sides. With the implementation of the year end VEP rm50 charges, sporean who initially have intention to buy iskandar property to stay and commute daily to spore to work will make them to re-consider or think twice about their plan. And for those sporean retiree who initially plan to invest in msia and apply for "Msia My Second Home" MM2H program may also change their mind as the frequent travelling across the causeway will add more financial burden to them. But one thing for sure is that iskandar homes are in fact oversupply. Johor bahru is a city of merely about 1.4 million population and not all of them are johorian. Some are from other states who reside in jb for work. Thererfore not all of them wanted to buy property in JB. You will notice that during a festive season like cny or hari raya, most people in jb return to their hometown or balik kampung. JB town will be like less lively and very little traffic on JB's road. With so many iskandar properties being built, where to get so many local people to stay ? In fact a large majority of msian are not able to afford the iskandar home as the minimum price is about 600k ringgit or above, to an average income msian who work in JB are unlikely to buy them. Therefore the majority of the iskandar home owners must be sporean or foreigner and definitely NOT msian. And if sporean or foreigner do not invest in JB properties, then there will be a substantial number of units unable to be sold resulting in low demand high supply situation and eventually the property price in JB will very likely to fall very badly in the near future and the investor suffer.(Not to forget about the exchange rate loss too as the ringgit is constantly depreciating) Sporean property investors will also have to pay a higher interest rate from the bank loan since BLR rate in msia is higher than spore and have to pay high levy and stamp duty for the purchase of msia property. |

Drastic Causeway toll hike will hurt businesses, say S'pore and Malaysia chambers
Report from The Straits Times (Singapore) dated 15 August 2014 :-
Drastic Causeway toll hike will hurt businesses, say S'pore and Malaysia chambers Two business chambers representing companies in Malaysia and Singapore have issued a joint statement warning that "drastic increases" in Causeway charges will have a detrimental economic impact. Here is the joint press statement released today by Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) and the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM): Singapore and Malaysia Chinese Chambers urge governments of both countries to work closely to resolve hike in Causeway transport charges The two recent measures imposed by the Malaysia and Singapore Governments to significantly increase toll charges and Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fees have sparked an outcry among the public. These measures also had great impact to business, tourism, logistics and transportation, amongst others. In view of the seriousness of the situation, Dato' Lim Kok Cheong, President of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) and Mr Thomas Chua, President of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI) convened a joint meeting today at Batu Pahat, Johor to solicit inputs and feedback from members so that both Chambers could then submit the relevant views and feedback for consideration of their respective Governments in the hope that this issue could be resolved quickly. Both ACCCIM and SCCCI understand the rationale that the governments of Malaysia and Singapore impose Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fees and toll charges in the interests of road maintenance, as well as traffic conditions and safety. However, the hikes in charges should not be made too drastically or hastily. It should be made with coordination among relevant authorities, and after an extensive study has been made on the likely impact to alleviate the burden on various parties. Although the increase in the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee and toll charges will increase Government revenue, reduce vehicular flow and traffic congestion, these drastic increases could deal a big blow to businesses of both countries, especially the transportation industry, tourism, restaurants, hotels, retail business, manufacturing etc. It would also affect the industrial and business development. At the same time, these drastic increases will have a domino effect on the prices of consumer goods, add to the burden of people, and have a definite impact on their consumption ability. From our understanding, there are currently many Malaysians working in Singapore with Permanent Resident status who live in Johor Bahru area and commute to and from Singapore and Johor Bahru to work. Malaysians working in Singapore would be badly hit since they now need to pay increased two-way toll charges to the Malaysian government. This increases their burden as well as the manpower cost for Singapore companies if transportation costs are factored in. Both Chambers are of the view that while an adjustment in toll charges and the imposition of Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee is acceptable, the charges levied have to be reasonable. Prior to implementing any new measures, we urge both Governments to consult the business community to solicit relevant views and feedback, understand and consider the difficulties encountered by the business community and the general public, and conduct a comprehensive study on the issues concerned before implementing the policies so as to mitigate the overall impact on various sectors. On the issue of increases in toll charges and Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) fee, both Chambers earnestly urge their respective Governments to enter into a comprehensive study and explore a workable solution for long-term cooperation and mutual benefits so as to create a win-win situation. ------ KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Re: S'poreans in JB
Lol.. looks like this whole thread is jammed with the toll charges rather then sharing..
Ok, maybe I can start sharing abit here, if you guys are interested in what I shared, then I can provide more info. I used to chiong in SG, and I have changed my routine from spa to FL services as I find that the chances of meeting ppl I know is lesser. I go for Thai and once in a while PRC FL (if u r active in Thai scene last time, u would have notice my nick b4, my previous nick is "Sometimes"). Though as a chinese, I still prefer chinese rather then Thai, but just that in SG, most Thai provide better services and cost effective as compare to PRC. However all these chionging in SG has been put to a stop after my findings in MY. In MY, I still go for FL services as it is different practice compare to SG. In MY, I can go to the place and see the girls to make sure she is what I want before I decide. In SG, it is not possible. Though the website have all the pictures, but I'm sure everyone know that not all pic is accurate. Not only that, of cos the price is cheaper and the PRC girls' services are definitely better as compared to SG. (of cos once in a while, I will still get 1 or 2 not so up to standard, but overall, I would say 85% of the girls that I went to, satisfied my thirst). The only bad part is to find the location initially, which I would say is a challenge to me. But after several visit, I already know my way. There are some which I had tried and these stables are the ones I frequent now; a) Zhu Ge Liang Escorts (They have 3 locations, Johor, Johor Jaya, Nusa Bestari, which actually spread different parts of JB, so it is easy for me if I'm around that area) b)Huashan Wechat Escorts (Used to be wolf, currently their website has changed to 808abc. They have 2 locations and their girls are featured in Johor 新山坡地酒店 and Nusa Bestari. I have tried Thai & Vietnams for other stables but eventually sticked to PRC here as their services are way better then those in SG. Not to mention the value for $$ again. There is also this thread that is titled : Top 10 Escort service & agencies in JB. that featured more than 10 OKTs there. But none of their website have photos of the FL. So I have never try them before. Any bro like to share on this? Hope this sharing is interesting to all SG bro |

Some people feel that it is more fair if the toll charge is applied to all vehicles including motorbike instead of car/bus/lorry/taxi only. Imagine if those msia car owner (regardless of spore or msia car) who are financially burden by the toll and vep fee may change to using motorbike instead. And if there is no control, then the result is that the causeway will get more jam thus affecting everybody. There is also about the safety issue as the motorcycle lane can only accommodate a certain number of motorcycles. If it gets over crowded, it may endangered the life of the motorcyclist too. Furthermore, too many motorcycle will cause extreme air pollution at the causeway and it also bad for the health of the motorcyclist and other road users. Therefore please spare a thought for all road-user and not just on the motorcyclist only. |
