This is really quite a no-brainer. First and foremost, you have to understand how guys think and not look at the entire thing from a female prospective.

You say you 2 are really good friends already who can talk about anything under the sun. That is already a good start. And you further add that you have been dropping hints which I assume there was no resistance or rejection from him else you wont be asking this question here.

The way I see it, it doesnt really matter which method you use, if you want him as a FB, then take the initiative. There is no need to be verbally express about it. All you need to do is to take your hintings up another notch and then take things from there. Whether it is alchohol or having a slow dance leaning in really close snug hug press your cheek against his slowly moving into a kiss or whatever.... just keep uping the hints so long as he doesnt reject.

I do not know what kind of character your guy is since you didnt elaborate on that but regardless, no matter what his character, so long as the guy doesnt push away or reject your hints whether directly or indirectly, I'd say you have a very good chance. Embarrassing? Not sure how your guy's character is, but most guys won't embarrasses a gal even after she proposes to be his FB...

Tell-tale signs would depends...e.g. in a pub or lounge or starbucks do the 2 of you sit very very close together? Do you feel any invisible barrier between you and him?

If the answers are yes and no, then more or less your chance is good.

One thing you didn't mention (apart from 'embarrassment') is why you are so reluctant to be more aggressive. I think the major challenge of moving from platonic to physical if fear of 'losing' a good friend. Sounds like you have a good platonic b/c can speak about everything. But are you afraid of losing that friendship? Many women I've known over the years do really enjoy purely platonic friendships and would shy away if they learn the guy is actually interested in sex (they feel tricked). But I suspect that's not your issue since you talk about having FB. My humble contribution.

I second SGDreamchaser's recommendation about initiating "accidental" contact with the guy. The problem, as some bros have pointed out, is that the guy may be so insensitive that he doesn't realize you're giving him an encouraging signal. Typical male problem!
