What you have said should be the exact way when you are in China, the People, Relationshop and Cash. If you don't know anyone, you should build up the relationship on your own to get thing done in a faster way, otherwise just have to pay more.
Let's face it, when the population is big, it is very difficult to govern. Their tradition and culture values varies. Sometimes, I try to put myself into their shoes. Just like asking for directions if you are at somewhere near to the Famous Nanjing Road Walkway, can you tell me how many people are there over the weekends. If 1% of the people is asking the convenience stall owner, how many he is going to answer? If I were him, I don think I will be very happy as well. But if the person is very polite, there is not point for him to show face to him/her.
Talking about taxi, it is very diifcult to get a taxi these days. Abt a month ago, I accidentally dropped my phone inside a taxi without taking the invoice, worst of all, my friend and I thought that it was a navy blue Nong Gong Shan Taxi. I called up the NGS taxi service station to help but not prevail. At the end, it was the metallic gold Qiang Sheng Taxi that I left my phone. The driver some how didn't know how to answer the call, also he had an argument with the subsequent passenger over the phone. Luckily before the battery gone flat he saw the caller ID, he returned a call and sent the phone back to me. I must say, the quality of people here has increased greatly overs the years.
You are right, it's all about tolerance & acceptance. If we keep on tekan people here, it also shows that our character is not much better than them. Let's behave ourselves and show them what we really are.
