its true the first thing that Singaporeans do when coming to BKK (or anywhere in Thailand) is to compare prices of cars, property, food, entertainment etc. But once the honeymoon period is over some people will begin to ask if giving up the standard of living back home is worth the cheaper car or condo.

Political uncertainty, personal safety, administrative efficiency, corruption, the legal system, hygiene standards, environmental pollution, transportation system, quality education, immigration & land ownership policies, health care, employment opportunities, taxation and ease of setting up business are some of the issues, on top of the more obvious language, customs, food & attitudes, that one needs to weigh when considering retiring in Thailand.

World Cup matches are broadcasted free but listening to a Thai commentary is not the same as Nigel Martin isn't it? Driving 2 hours daily in bumper-to-bumper traffic from your house in the suburbs to work and back makes u wish when those damn politicians can extend the MRT & BTS lines. There is NO DECENT char kway teow, chicken rice, roti prata, nasi melayu or brani in Bangkok!

Yes, very far from living comfortably in sgp. living comfortably means no need to bother about saving every cents from what i spend. eg. try to find the cheapest car park in orchard without thinking of the 1km walk, trying to escape ERP but got myself into a jam. trying to buy cheaper groceries in johor but was stuck on the causeway for hrs, thinking of bring my whole family to universal studios but end up bring them to somewhere cheaper.

Oh! you speak my mind. transportation system, hygiene standards, quality education and income taxation is my concern at this point of time. Maybe i will change my thinking again when it is time to retire. Yes, food in sgp is still better to me.

Bro Norice, yeah the medical care is cheap here. In Singapore we also get very good standards of basic healthcare at affordable rates. I've seen the doctors and dentists in Bangkok too and I feel the rates are just slightly cheaper than what I get back home. But you being from the States I totally agree with your point of view. If I was an American or European then I would do the same as you.

Bro Motoji, I gave up driving in Singapore years ago. The rate of depreciation is not worth it. Better put your money into property or invest. So many of my ex-colleagues 好吃不好看. Better save that money for your early retirement. Helped that I dun like driving in the city - too much traffic & inconsiderate drivers. If u have kids then Bangkok is not a place you would want to raise them. Take education, a good school here is even more expensive than Singapore. Speaking of safety. Last night was eating at Hway Kuang when a shot rang out. 2 young punks were arguing when one drew a gun and fired a shot. This happened about 50 meters from where I was. What if this idiot didn't point into the sky? Shot could have easily killed anyone unlucky enough.

Chocolate man... hahaha what Thais call black Africans. Those hanging around Pratunam are drug couriers. This is the Golden Triangle after all. Loitering around all day doing nothing but drinking beer. Couple of years back one such drug mule fell to his death trying to escape a police raid. Happened just opposite the hotel I was staying. Bugger tried to jump across to another building but missed.

Yes, medical and dental care is cheap compared to Singapore or USA! But diligently you have to check your doctor's or dentist's credientials and make sure they did additional training in USA! Especially medical doctors, all my personal physicians in Bangkok completed additional fellowships in USA Medical Centers!
