Kong, FLC, Vingroup to change Quang Binh’s look

VietNamNet Bridge - Quang Binh, the land in Vietnam’s central region, is expected to have a new life as it has become the homeland of Kong and the area where many big real estate groups have landed.

In 1997, Vietnam refused the ‘James Bond – Tomorrow Never Dies’ film crew. The event then caused a shock to the Asian film industry because Vietnam was the only country in the world which rejected such a large-scale film project.

However, things will be different with Kong: Skull Island. Quang Binh provincial authorities understand that the filming in the province is a golden opportunity for them to attract more travelers.

Therefore, they have been following a professional plan to promote tourism.

It has launched an ad clip about Quang Binh with introductions by Jordan Vogt-Roberts. The local authorities also negotiated with the film crew about the putting up of statues of Kong’s arms in three filming spots – Yen Phu Lake, Cha Noi Valley and Chuot Cave in Minh Hoa district.

Quang Binh has also signed a contract with TripAdvisor to promote tourism.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has chosen Jordan Vogt-Roberts as Vietnam’s Tourism Ambassador.

Located on the "Central Heritage Road", Quang Binh is a province with great potential for tourism development, with 116 kilometers of unspoiled seashore with beautiful beaches, suitable to resorts, high-end entertainment

complexes. Phong Nha Grotto, 50 kilometers northwest of Dong Hoi town, is one of the most beautiful grottoes in Vietnam.

The New York Times ranks Quang Binh eighth out of 52 most attractive destination points in the world and the first out of 12 most attractive destination points in Asia.

Vietnamese real estate developers, recently having realized the great potential of Quang Binh, have begun pouring capital into infrastructure and resorts projects there.

Truong Thinh became the pioneer in exploiting the great potential in Quang Binh when it built the first high-end resort in the locality. Sun Spa Resort, with 234 5-star rooms, 10 bungalows and 12 villas on Bao Ninh Peninsula, was put into operation in 2004.

Truong Thinh is also the owner of Dong Thien Duong (Paradise Cave), an ecotourism complex put into operation in 2002.

Quang Binh has many other mid-end real estate resort projects, including the 6.3 hectare 3-star Bao Ninh Beach Resort in Dong Hoi City, built in 2012, Sunrise Quang Binh, Riverside Quang Binh and Sai Gon Quang Binh.

However, Quang Binh is expecting huge projects to be developed by the ‘big guys’ such as FLC, Muong Thanh and Vingroup.

FLC kicked off a super project on resort, villas and high-end entertainment facilities in Hai Ninh and Hong Thuy communes in April 2016, the largest infrastructure tourism project in the northern and central regions of Vietnam.

Vietnamese spend billions of VND on imported cosmetics

VietNamNet Bridge - Reports from the Trade Map of ITC (International Trade Center) and the World Bank show that Vietnam imported $500 million worth of cosmetics in 2011 and $1.1 billion in 2016, while the figure is expected to double by 2020 to $2.2 billion.

Within one hour, Ha, the owner of a cosmetics shop on Xa Dan street in Hanoi, had vast sales of VND10 million.

Ha has been running the shop for the last three years and has had an annual growth rate of no less than 20 percent.

Thuy, an office worker, came to the shop during the lunchtime, looking for new lipstick product with the advertised sale price of VND1 million.

Thuy could not estimate how much money she spends on cosmetics every year, but she said she bought 4-5 lipstick products in the last three months.

A Euromonitor International report showed that the value of Vietnam’s cosmetics market, 90 percent of which are imports, two years ago exceeded the $1 billion threshold ago and has witnessed two-digit growth rates.

Meanwhile, the budget that consumers will reserve for cosmetics is expected to increase to 1.2 percent after three years, from 0.4 percent at the end of 2011.

According to ITC, Singapore, the EU, Thailand and South Korea are the biggest cosmetics exporters to Vietnam.

Regarding European exporters, while the imports from France and Italy have decreased recently by 16 percent and 3 percent, respectively, imports from Spain, Germany and Ireland have increased by 2-16 percent.

According to the General Department of Customs (GDC), in the first two months of the year, the import value of fragrances, cosmetics and toiletries from Singapore alone reached $30 million, while imports from Italy, France, South Korea and Thailand were between $2 million and 7 million.

The EU-Vietnam Business Network (EVBN) commented in a report that the growth rate is the result of urbanization, connection with international mass media and increase in demand.

Perfume tops the list of biggest cosmetics items which accounts for 55 percent of total imports, followed by make-up products, which account for 21 percent.

Perfume and make-up products saw the sharpest price increases, by 27 percent and 10 percent, respectively.

Ha said her business has been prosperous. Office workers like Thuy are her loyal clients. They don’t regret spending several hundreds of thousands of dong or several millions of dong on one cosmetic product if they like the products.

Surveys show that imported cosmetics in Vietnam have average selling prices of between hundred thousands and several million dong, while high-end products are priced at tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dong.

Vietnam's PM orders investigation into latest Chinese tour scams

By VnExpress March 29, 2017 | 08:21 pm GMT+7

The return of '$0 tours' has once again revealed the shady business behind commission-based, Chinese-only stores.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ordered the northern province of Quang Ninh to investigate reports of Chinese tour scams following a sudden jump in the number of Chinese visitors in March.

Quang Ninh authorities are also instructed to deal with any violations seriously, a government statement said Wednesday.

The government order was issued after Mong Cai Border Gate, the main entrance from China into Quang Ninh, recently reported that the number of Chinese arrivals via the gate has increased to 5,000 per day, and even 10,000-15,000 over the weekends, which is two to three times higher than usual.

But according to local media reports, Vietnamese tourism experts blame the return of what they call "$0 tours" for the unusual influx of Chinese tourist arrivals in Quang Ninh. These tours are run by Chinese travel firms who bring tourists to the world-renowned Ha Long Bay for free before "selling" them to their counterparts in Vietnam.

Once they arrive in Quang Ninh, their sightseeing trips are cut and tourists are led into a number of stores that sell commodities listed at rip-off prices. Commission is paid to the tour companies for bringing visitors to the shops, which reportedly are only open to Chinese customers and discriminate against Vietnamese locals and tourists.

Since last year, authorities have exposed and punished several stores of this kind in Dong Trieu District and the towns of Mong Cai, Ha Long and Uong Bi. The stores were accused of overcharging tourists and damaging the reputation of Vietnam’s tourism industry. Most of them were thought to have closed after being exposed by media reports and receiving fines from local authorities in the latter half of 2016.

In 2016, Quang Ninh welcomed about 1.6 million Chinese tourists via the Mong Cai Border Gate.

Police seize fake coffee shipment in robusta king Vietnam

By Ho Binh Minh March 29, 2017 | 05:02 pm GMT+7

A police officer checks coffee bags seized from a truck in Vinh Town, Nghe An Province. Of the 850kg of so-called coffee, 650kg turned out to be roasted soybeans. Photo by Hai Binh

Over three quarters of the 850kg shipment turned out to be soybeans soaked in chemicals and flavorings.

Environment police seized a shipment of fake coffee at a bus station in the central town of Vinh on Tuesday, some 300km (186 miles) south of Hanoi.

The officers were on a routine patrol when they spotted a truck laden with 16 suspicious-looking bags, which the truck driver declared as coffee.

The bags weighed 850 kilograms (1,870 lb), but only 200kg was real coffee, while the rest turned out to be roasted soybeans soaked in chemicals and flavoring to make them look like coffee. The beans were on their way for sale in Nghe An Province from a company in the southern province of Binh Duong, the driver told police.

The catch is the latest in a series of cases involving fake coffee exposed over the past five years in Vietnam, the world's biggest robusta producer and exporter.

Fake coffee has been found across the nation, which has one of the world's fastest growing retail coffee markets, trailing only behind Indonesia, Turkey and India, as reported by global market intelligence agency Mintel.

Police have also uncovered small processing plants making fake coffee by over-roasting soybeans and corn in Ho Chi Minh City, which is Vietnam's main coffee trading market, as well as in Can Tho City and provinces like Binh Duong and Thanh Hoa.

Even in Dak Lak, the country's top coffee-growing province, market inspectors have found coffee powder containing only 10 percent real coffee, with the majority made up of soybeans, corn and chemicals used to create the bitter taste and bubbles.

In July 2016, the Vietnam Standard and Consumers Association said it had taken 253 coffee samples from various shops in four locations, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and found that one third of them had very low caffeine content, while the stimulant was totally absent in five samples.

The coffee sold in street-side shops, hospitals and schools tended to have very low caffeine content or no caffeine at all, the association said.

A kilogram of robusta beans now fetches around VND46,000 ($2.02), while imported soybeans can be bought on the domestic market for VND12,000-14,000 per kilo.

Changing awareness

These findings by police and market inspectors have caught public attention and have changed consumer behavior.

"Consumers are now aware that fake coffee is a real problem," said Le Duc Huy, deputy general director of the Dak Lak-based Simexco, one of Vietnam's biggest exporters of semi-processed robusta beans. "Many now know how to spot fake coffee."

He said the content of real coffee sold on the market has now doubled to around 60 percent in the southern region and the Central Highlands coffee belt.

"But in the northern and the central regions, which lie far from the coffee processing hub, consumers may not be aware, so the coffee content there is as low as 20-30 percent," Huy told VnExpress International via telephone from Dak Lak.

Improved awareness among Vietnamese coffee drinkers has been reflected in the rising domestic consumption rate in a country where tea is also a popular drink.

Vietnam is forecast to use 172,200 tons of coffee at home in the 2016/2017 crop year, up 10 percent from the previous season, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its December report.

The domestic consumption rate has been rising in double digits since at least the 2012/2013 season, based on USDA data. The country's crop year lasts between October and September.

Rising exports

Higher domestic consumption, coupled with a rush to sell by exporters in the first months of 2017 and the smaller 2016/2017 harvest due to adverse weather, could disrupt coffee exports, traders said. More instant coffee being produced locally has also been contributing to the tighter export flow, Vietnamese industry officials said.

Vietnam could export an estimated 180,000 tons of coffee in March, the highest monthly shipment since April 2016, based on government data released on Wednesday.

Most of the shipments were sold in late January or February as exporters tried to cash in on higher prices while cutting costs, traders said. On the other hand, foreign buyers said they had stepped up purchases based on expectations of a smaller crop in Vietnam.

The March estimate has brought the country's total export volume to 847,000 tons in the first half of the 2016/2017 season, up 4 percent from a year ago.

Vietnam could face coffee shortages from May-June due to rising shipments and dwindling domestic stocks, top export firm Intimex has said.

Huy of Simexco said Vietnam should do more to fight fake coffee.

"The media should do its best to help consumers spot real coffee," he said. "Related agencies should also step up inspections of coffee shops because shop owners are making money by selling fake coffee as it costs up to 50 percent less than real coffee."

Vietnam ranks second best place in the world to teach English

By VnExpress March 28, 2017 | 12:30 am GMT+7

English teachers can earn up to $2,200 a month.

With job vacancies available all year round offering high salaries, Vietnam has been ranked the second best place in the world to teach English by TEFL Exchange, a community for teachers of English as a foreign language.

The site estimates that a foreign English teacher can earn between $1,200-2,200 a month in Vietnam, where the average annual income in 2016 was just $2,200.

They can find a job any time of year and the best places to do so are the country’s three largest cities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

Candidates only need to hold a bachelor’s degree and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate.

English is an obligatory subject from sixth grade across Vietnam, but in large cities, many primary schools demand high competency. Foreign language centers have been thriving here, with students as young as three years old.

TEFL Exchange came up with the best places to teach English in 2017 after saying that 2016 was a bad year and many people wanted to escape the chaos of Brexit and Trump.

Myanmar topped the list with a salary range similar to Vietnam. Nicaragua came third, followed by Nepal, Brazil, Madagascar, Chile, UAE, the Czech Republic and the Philippines.

All of the countries selected also offer beautiful culture, nature and amazing food, the report said.

The highlights for Vietnam are good coffee, cheap beer and delicious bun cha – a combination of grilled pork patties, cold dipping sauce, fresh vegetables and rice vermicelli which tastes best in Hanoi, as proven by former U.S. President Barack Obama himself.
