Over 38,000 flights delayed and canceled so far this year: Vietnam aviation authority
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 12/07/2016 14:07 GMT + 7 Over 38,000 flights operated by Vietnam-based carriers were delayed or canceled in the first 11 months of 2016, according to a recent report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV). The report was published on Monday at a conference hosted by CAAV in Hanoi to review the year’s national aviation service. According to the report, airlines in Vietnam operated over 228,000 flights in the first 11 months of 2016, an increase of around 37,000 flights compared to last year. Over 16 percent of those, or 36,844 flights, were delayed, while 1,605 others were canceled, the report says. Both numbers illustrate a slight rise compared to the same period in 2015. The report also predicts Vietnam’s aviation market to serve up to 52.2 million passengers by the end of 2016, a 29 percent surge over last year. Among those, 28 million will be domestic passengers, 30 percent more than the number of domestic flyers in 2015. The growth has been attributed to the expansion of local budget airlines VietJet Air and Jetstar Pacific, which are now operating 50 routes connecting Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City with another 17 local airports. Close to 55 percent of domestic passengers opted for no-frills airlines, according to the report. Meanwhile, 52 foreign airlines based in 28 different countries and territories are also operating 78 routes to Vietnamese destinations including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Hai Phong, and Nha Trang, the report notes. An increase in the fleet size of Vietnam-based airlines was also observed in 2016, with 14 new jets added so far this year and five more expected by the end of the year.

Australian cheated by Vietnam restaurant drops lawsuit after getting full refund
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 12/07/2016 13:03 GMT + 7 An Aussie who was charged nearly US$30,000 via payment card without his consent at a Ho Chi Minh City restaurant in August has dropped lawsuit against the eatery, after receiving a full refund from its representative on Tuesday. On August 11, Caracciolo David John dined at Nightfall restaurant on Thai Van Lung Street in District 1 and cleared the bill with two payment cards. The eatery’s attendants then deliberately swiped both of his payment cards and asked him to enter his PIN code multiple times, claiming there was an error with the card reading device. The man did not discover the fraud until after he had returned to Australia and received an account statement from the bank, which showed he had been charged a total of AUD39,429 (nearly US$30,000) for the dinner at Nightfall. John authorized a Vietnamese representative to press legal charges against the restaurant in October. The man has decided to drop any further legal proceedings, however, after he had the full amount of the cheated money transferred to his bank account, his lawyer Truong Xuan Tam confirmed with Tuoi Tre (Youth) on Tuesday. John had arrived in Vietnam last Wednesday to work with local police on the issue. The refund was made by M., the restaurant’s legal representative and the younger brother of its owner Tran Thi Hong Phuong, who was in October wanted by District 1 Police after she failed to make an appearance at the police station as summoned. M. reportedly attempted to bargain the refund down to 30 and 50 percent of the money charged on the Australian customer’s card, before giving in and agreed to pay the full refund of VND683,150,000 (around $30,000). The sum was transferred to the bank account of Caracciolo David John, who dropped his legal suit in a written letter shortly afterwards. Local authority says it is still looking into the case.

Vietnam man identified from video threatening woman with tear gas gun
TUOI TRE NEWS UPDATED : 12/07/2016 09:57 GMT + 7 Police have been able to confirm the details of a video clip that went viral on Monday, showing a man opening fire during a heated row with a woman in Ho Chi Minh City. Tan Binh District police have confirmed that the video was filmed in the district’s Ward 15, and the man, identified as Bui Duc Phuong, is indeed the director of a security firm as reported. Phuong, director of Viet Nhat Co., was summoned to work with police shortly after the video caused a stir on the Internet. In the 2-minute long clip, Phuong and an unidentified woman are seen exchanging swear words, apparently over the man’s debt to the woman’s child. The man is also seen pointing his fingers at the woman and kicking her. In the middle of the argument, Phuong pulls a handgun from his pocket and points it at the woman’s head before opening fire into the air, despite the woman’s challenge to shoot her. Police say that after working with Phuong yesterday afternoon, the firearm has in fact been confirmed to be a tear gas gun, rather than a firearm carrying lethal ammunition. Security companies are allowed to use tear gas guns as ‘support tools,’ with Phuong having obtained the correct permit for his. “However, licensed users of tear gas guns are only allowed to use them for proper purposes, and Phuong has violated the rule in the video,” one Tan Binh police officer underlined. “Phuong will be held accountable for the improper use of the gun.” Continue reading here http://tuoitrenews.vn/society/38420/...in-viral-video
