Brewery giant Carlsberg sneaks into the big leagues in Vietnam's market

Reason to cheer: The Danish company is now the number four player in a country with a vibrant beer culture.

Betting on Vietnam’s high beer consumption, Carlsberg Br$$$$$es has acquired almost 11 percent of the local market, which is still dominated by a state-owned brewer.

The company’s performance in Vietnam, especially in the central region, has been strong, Carlsberg Vietnam CEO Tayfun Uner said at a press conference earlier this week.

He said it is currently holding more than half of the beer market in the central provinces, with the highest growth recorded in Da Nang, from merely 1 percent in 2012 to 19.8 percent.

Carlsberg is now ranked fourth in Vietnam with a 10.8 percent market share, after Ho Chi Minh City-based Sabeco with 46 percent, Heineken-owned Vietnam Brewery Limited with 25 percent, and Hanoi-based Habeco with nearly 20 percent. Nearly 90 percent of Sabeco, the maker of the iconic Saigon brand, is owned by the state.

The Danish beer maker’s significant growth in the central region is in line with its production expansion strategy in the country.

It acquired Hue Brewery, a dominant player in the central region known for its best-selling brand Huda Hue, for more than $90 million in 2011.

Carlsberg is also currently holding a 17.23 stake in the country’s third-biggest beer firm Habeco, which is scheduled to have its listing on the secondary stock market next Friday.

As the Vietnamese government is speeding up its plan to offload assets at Habeco, Carlsberg is expected to more than double its stake in the firm.

The company has been pouring money into the country as the Vietnamese are guzzling more beer than ever.

According to the Vietnam Beer Alcohol Beverage Association, Vietnamese drinkers are expected to consume more than 4 billion liters of beer this year, up from 3.88 billion liters in 2015.

Over the past five years, Vietnam has seen a 40-percent jump in beer consumption to more than 3.8 billion liters in 2015.

Each Vietnamese person drinks on average 27.4 liters, making them the heaviest beer drinkers in Southeast Asia, the third in Asia after Japan and China, and in the world’s top 25.

Meow. Hanoi to have Hello Kitty theme park

The world’s most famous feline character from Japan will soon meet its Vietnamese fans.

A new indoor Hello Kitty theme park will be built in Hanoi, aiming to tap the huge demand for family entertainment in a country that has become increasingly affluent in recent years.

The character, produced by the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, will appear alongside other kids’ favorites such as My Melody and and Little Twin Stars.

Vietnam’s BRG Group announced the project after signing an agreement with Sanrio Wave Hong Kong to develop the park, the first theme park under an international brand in the country.

Sanrio Global Asia Ltd.'s CEO and Chairman of Sanrio Inc. said: “This will certainly be a very special gift for children in Vietnam, both for boys and girls.”

No further details about the cost, location and timeframe have been provided.

Despite Vietnam’s impressive economic growth in recent years, family entertainment options in the country are generally limited, unable to meet the demand. Many children in affluent families are often brought to theme parks in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Ho Chi Minh City proposes new metro line worth $1.84 billion

Ho Chi Minh City is seeking the National Assembly’s approval to implement the first phase of Metro Line No.5 with total investment capital of VND41 trillion ($1.84 billion).

The municipal administration recently submitted a proposal to the government for Phase 1 of the urban rail project, according to the city's Management Authority for Urban Railways.

As one out of three urban railways that have been given top priority for 2016-2021, Metro Line No.5 would run for nine kilometers and connect Metro Line No.2 at Tan Binh District's Bay Hien Interchange with Metro Line No.1 at the Saigon Bridge Station.

The European Investment Bank alongside the German Reconstruction Bank have offered a combined $381 million loan, while the Spanish government has pledged $299.38 million, which would cover nearly 40 percent of the total investment.

The remainder will be provided by the Asian Development Bank ($517.11 million) and Vietnam’s state budget ($504 million).

The Metro Line No.5 is scheduled to open by 2025, and will be able to withstand level-7 magnitude earthquakes.

Most of the line will be underground but 1.43 km will be along elevated rail with six trains traveling at maximum speeds of 90km per hour.

According to the proposal, this project will require more than 30 hectares (74 acres) of land, including residential areas covering 46,000 square meters and affecting 1,381 households. Site clearance will be completed in 2018 or 2019.

Driver almost has arm cut off in machete attack on Saigon street

The two attackers managed to escape and the police are hunting them down.

A man was attacked when driving his motorcycle in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday afternoon and had his right arm almost severed by a machete.

Police are looking for the two attackers who managed to fled the crime scene in front of a high school in Binh Thanh District.

Witnesses said Nguyen Do Thanh Binh, 41, was riding on Dinh Tien Hoang Street at around 4:30 p.m.

According to the police, two men on a motorcycle suddenly approached him from behind. One of them, wielding a machete, then tried to hack off the victim's right arm.

They escaped into an alley after leaving the victim unconscious on the street.

A police officer said the victim had been followed by his attackers from District 1.

Binh was rushed to hospital. Doctors have been trying to reattach this arm and treat his head injury.

Man dies after falling into open sewer in Saigon

He was reportedly rushing to catch a bus and fell into the hole.

A man died after falling into an open sewer in Ho Chi Minmh's Binh Tan District on Friday.

The water around the sewer was about 2m deep following flooding, and it was not protected by a grate when the accident happened.

Workers had opened the sewer as part of ongoing upgrade work, but did not replace the grate, said Nguyen Ngoc Cong, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Anti-Flooding Center, the project's investor.

The center will punish those responsible for the accident, Cong said.

Last weekend, an eight-year-old boy was washed down a sewer in a street in the southern province of Binh Duong after heavy rains combined with high tides to cause flash floods in the area.

A similar incident occurred in Binh Duong in September 2014 when a nine-year-old boy was pulled into a manhole on the sidewalk after the cover was washed away by heavy rain. The body of the boy was found two days later, around 700 meters away.

In October 2014, a five-year-old boy who fell into a flooded underground sewer in Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam was luckier after locals acted quickly to open a manhole 40 meters away and pull him out. The boy was already unconscious and only coughed up water after five minutes of CPR.
