Good for her - this is what we call "Value Pricing" - you pay what you think she is worth and if someone is prepared to pay $5K, that's great for her. She belongs to a different category. Take for example a piece of Jade, or a Picasso painting - it can fetch more than a million bucks, and yet to others, they will not pay ten bucks for either of them.
On the other hand, some of us will go for "Benefit Pricing" - we pay for services and other options for a relative good value for money. Bros who are interested in the "Benefit Pricing" consider some of the following options:
1) go to Haikou - you can get a top end model/actress like quality for RMB 5000 (about S$ 1,000 plus for the whole night) or entry level (equivalent to our many FLs here who are from PRC anyway for RMB 600 (S$120 plus - I am taking a rough equivalent of S$1 = 50 RMB for easy calculation, but actual rate is less than 50 RMB). In between the two extremes, a very good nice looking one will be around RMB 1,000 to 1,500 (for the whole night and do all the standard SOP stuff, plus with the right chemsitry, can do something more unique or creative). Airfare by Tiger Air is about S$ 200 to 400 and hotel stay in a 4/5 star if local is about RMB 360 per night. (Don't stay in International chain - cost you easily 6 to 7 times more) So you spend about 3nights there and throw in some good golfing with good makan, and you still have change from the $5,000.
2) if you want some class - then go to Shanghai - more expensive around RMB 2,500 to 3,500 per night for very good stock. Airfare around S$ 400 to 500 by low cost carrier.
3) Still if you want really good stock - go for either Tokyo or Seoul - still within the S$5K band.
I have visited the above places within the last 12 months. If you do not have any contacts, you can try to ask around the cab drivers - don't settle for the first driver you ask - check them out, and you will be able to get a reasonable honest one who will take you to the right place with more of the local pricing. As an example, a friend of my was taken to an entry level at Haikou and charged RMB1000 whereas my regular taxi guy took me to the same place and I paid only RMB 400. Same as in Tokyo - they can rip you off for Yen 40,000 for a shot with lousy stock (non-Japanese posing off as Japanese) Real Japanese Office girl will be about that price.

Yes of course it has happened, will happen, is happening, shall happen and happens in the future.

Its in no way an interesting trend,its not like models started fucking their photogs or anyone else who works with them just these few years, it has always happened just that We Don't Know.
