Harry Wilson double keeps Liverpool U23s top of Premier League 2

Welsh youngster inspires young Reds to 2-0 win at West Ham United



Harry Wilson scored twice as Liverpool under-23s continued their perfect start to the Premier League 2 campaign.

Wilson's brace before half-time helped Neil Critchley's side earn their fifth straight win with a 2-0 win against West Ham United at Dagenham's Chigwell Construction Stadium.


The young Reds, though, were indebted to a fine penalty save from goalkeeper Kamil Grabara to prevent the Hammers mounting a comeback before the interval.

Danny Ings was absent from the squad, suggesting he could in the first-team reckoning for their League Cup game against Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

Wales international Wilson, the U23s' top scorer last season, is keen to make up for lost time having had his pre-season hampered by injury.

And the 20-year-old was by some distance the stellar performer in a game in which Liverpool, resplendent in their orange second kit, were dominant from the opening whistle.

Indeed, only 11 seconds had elapsed when they fashioned their first chance, Ovie Ejaria set up by Rhian Brewster but denied by West Ham goalkeeper Nathan Trott.

Brewster then slid the ball wastefully wide of goal having been put through by Herbie Kane before the visitors went ahead on 12 minutes.

After his initial corner found its way back to him, Wilson drifted in from the right flank and curled a brilliant effort that beat the unsighted Trott and bounced into the bottom corner.

Wilson almost netted again minutes later, reaching Matty Virtue's low cross from the right but firing too high after earlier good vision by Ejaria.

The Welshman, though, wasn't to be denied, and netted a second on 21 minutes.

Danny ings and Ben Woodburn may play too. Good to see the teams rotated.

Leicester City may not field Jamie Vardy and some regulars.

Klopp should field the entire U-23 team for this competition. They thrashed the senior team consisting of probables for the Leicester game 3-1 in a practice match yesterday..... would have been higher score if not for Danny Ward's excellent performance between the posts including a penalty save from Solanke.

Not bothered by this result as our priority this season has to be the EPL and CL(in that order), nothing else matters.

That said, not at all happy with the performances by Henderson, the Ox and our defence generally(based on what i read). Looks like we really need a new captain who is actually going to command and lead the team!


Glad to hear that Ward and Robertson had a good game though, with Coutinho, Solanke and Woodburn also having quite a good turn out.

The real action starts again on Saturday, ironically against Leicester one more time!


As aside, was reading today's ST interview with amongst others ex Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn(in town for the Battle of the Masters), who raised an interesting point on Liverpool's current crappy zonal marking defence system. He believes in a mixture of systems in defence instead, saying "If you come up against a team with a particularly strong header, I would say I would have one of my defenders go and man-mark him and still do a bit of zonal marking as well." Food for thought perhaps?

Same old same old . Can't score goals and can't even defend . Other people have 3 chances and they manage to score 2 goals . Liverpool's trip to Spartak Moscow - UEFA to rule on possible behind closed door sanction

Reds wait anxiously on verdict after Russian fans appeared to fire rocket at referee

Liverpool will discover today whether Tuesday's Champions League trip to Spartak Moscow is played behind closed doors.

UEFA are holding a disciplinary hearing after Spartak were charged with setting off fireworks and the throwing of missiles during their Champions League tie in Maribor last week.


Proceedings were opened after video footage showed Spartak fans appear to fire a rocket towards the referee in the game in Slovenia, which ended 1-1.

Among the sanctions that has been previously used by UEFA against clubs is to play future home matches behind closed doors.

And that would seriously affect Liverpool supporters who have already made travel plans for the game in Moscow in less than five days' time.

Liverpool, who put 1,145 tickets for the match on sale last week, have been in touch with UEFA over safety and the possible impact on fans should they be barred from attending.

Liverpool have already offered to pay the visa costs at £118.80 for all supporters travelling to the match.

Previous timescales had suggested that the UEFA process would not be concluded by the time the Reds travel to Moscow for the game on September 26.

When Manchester City played behind closed doors against CSKA Moscow in 2014 the process took around six to eight weeks to reach a conclusion.

Spartak Moscow were in domestic action last night, winning 2-0 at Kuban in the Russian Cup with former Liverpool target Quincy Promes scoring both goals.
