I hv encountered this similar before once in many years back.
Let me share my stories.

I translated these in English to my best ability.

On her birthday, I sent a bouquet of flowers to her shop.

My ML watsapp me replied"Thank you for the flowers. Please do not waste money on flowers, just give the $ to me"
Then I replied " How about iphone or handbags?"
ML replied " iphone can, Handbags depends what brand, but money is the best."
I replied " Ok."
She replied very fast "You not only man I know who send me flowers on my birthdays, I also replied the same"

From that moment onwards, I nv buy gifts for ML anymore.
