Re: Cambodia (Phnom Penh)
It don't look tense to me.Cambodian is not so 'hardcore' enough.Compare to thai or other asia country people, they still not so strong minded.Only come out and make some noise
Now the riot is spark by factory worker who demand more pay and opposition camp join in,few months ago was largely stage by opposition party. Their riot usually last a while not like thai cos internally they are still afraid of govertment. |

How many Cambodian/Thais will want to join in the protest? They know whoever is the govt, these politicians are still the same, "Corruption", maybe better words, "to benefit themselves". Statistic shows, population of Cambodia is about 15 millions while Thailand is about 68 millions. How to hardcore? Quote:
Anyway, it is insane demand of doubling the salary of each worker overnight. Which company is willing or can to do this??? BTW, factory dun employ only 1 or 2 staffs, they have 100s or 1000s workers.

Re: Cambodia (Phnom Penh)
i am currently living in kampong som, from what my staffs have told me the garments workers here are already being paid 160+, those in PP are asking for 195 from 95, so not a lot of people are joining in the protest as plan, and the opposition are fanning the situation to advance their cause.
either way not enough protester in pp, they have to "tiao zhui" from other province and the police are restricting movements from outside coming into PP, so this garment protest will die out soon unless the opposition can fan another industry workers to join in. |

Re: Cambodia (Phnom Penh)
Hi all Cambodia travelers, I have just came back from 7D6N vacation in PP, here's my view from ground level ( btw am already booked a flight for next trip on the 29th to 6 feb, cause jetstar is cheaper), was caught in a traffic jam requiring taxi to turn around to my hotel located in Monivong road on arrival. it was a good sight indeed to get a chance seeing the throngs of protesters movement around that area , the first thing i saw was most of the protesters are in the 18-25 age group , looking thin and fragile males and females. hardly seeing a more mature person around them so my thoughts were that they rarely know what they are doing just following "leaders", their looks betray their thoughts as they are like in a confuse stage, poor age group in today's Phnom Penh rising costs of living. I think everything on the street has risen 100% over the past year according to a local friend, u can see fanciful sports cars and the super-rich eating sumptuously in any day at any time, my pizza set lunch cost USD 38.00 for 3 adults same as in singapore pizzahut.
Going to a supermarket in Sorya Mall to buy a pack of Angkor cigarette cost me 3 USD , discover a roadside stall selling at USD 1 , makes you wonder any place with aircon and away from dust will costs 3 times more than roadside stalls. It is a real eye opening because MP for a happy ending will be costlier than hooking up counter sales girls or hotel receptions... but i went one place better which is best for tourists , outside or nearby university or institute for students , meet one who is doing accounting major, a provincial girl working in Swansen part-time and studying fulltime. Well the fun as in me starts, i paid her for the guiding fees and the end she repay me with loving tender care. I must say they are a very good nature girl not demanding but yearning to learn more of the world we come from , someone asked if i have go to NAGA world, sorry NO as i felt that place is overprice both food and shopping. walking around that area already feels insecure because i am the poor type not use to Orchard road or MBS lifestyle. however this trip i am very happy knowing a syt who translates for me in local buying and eating and bargaining for tuk tuk transfers from one place to another. Next trip will be going to Kep / Kampot , well i am ignoring sihanoukville this time. I also make a discovery of a temple in PP which i must go again as i feel good with the master here the coming trip. So to all who's planning a trip to explore Cambodia, feel free to book your flight as i don"t think the protest will escalates to the extend like Thailand. Although there are discontent in the country , people are still very backward and relax in life style, unless they have been to other countries and bringing back new ideas and lifestyle just like in Vietnam where $$$$ is everything for anything. Hope to hear more happening from others in this small section of Cambodia. Oh btw heard a rumour that Viets are trying to buy up Kampot for further expansion..... cheers |
