Faulty Sengkang lift shut for checks

A malfunctioning lift in Sengkang has been shut down for safety checks as the authorities decide not to take any chances in the wake of a series of injuries from lift accidents this year.

The decision was made after residents reported problems with the lift at Block 299A, Compassvale Street last weekend.


Last Friday, a resident of the block, assistant safety manager Tan Joo Jin, 45, told The Straits Times that the lift had stopped randomly between floors and dropped suddenly. Another resident ran into problems with the same lift on Sunday afternoon, Channel NewsAsia reported.

She was heading to her apartment on the ninth floor when the lift jerked and stopped midway for a few seconds before opening at the fifth floor.

When asked, the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council said its lift engineer and contractor tested the lift on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

MP Zainal Sapari, chairman of the town council, said no issues were detected after last Friday's report, and that they suspected the problem might be intermittent.

The authorities are looking for the person who allegedly flung a cat down from an HDB block in Redhill estate last week.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) said it will probe the death of the cat, which was found dying from severe injuries at the foot of Block 89, Redhill Close on Saturday (June 11).

The animal had a broken leg and shattered mouth, according to a Facebook post by user Fariq Sani.

Mr Fariq told The Straits Times that the cat could have been thrown from a higher floor, judging from its severe injuries.

An official of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said the cat had already perished when its rescue worker arrived at the scene.

The SPCA will be putting up appeal posters in the neighbourhood in the hope to find out from residents how the cat died.

DHL scammer to man who pranks him: Do you still want to play?

Have you been recently harrassed by scammers calling to request for you to remit money for a suspicious parcel? You're not alone.

Fed up with these scams, one netizen decided to prank one supposed scammer.

The man, who goes by the moniker Benedict Mrmarksman, posted on Facebook a recording of his phone conversation with the scammer on Wednesday (June 8).

Speaking in Mandarin, the recording starts off with an ongoing phone conversation between the scammer and Mrmarksman. The netizen then tells the scammer that he is "Willy Chen" and he is known as "Wei".

After a minute or so of clarifying his name, the scammer asks him to hold while he confirms Mrmarksman's telephone number.

Everyday on Hp or land line I even get calls from auto machine w recorded msg in Mandarin saying I got package unclaimed with DHL etc...

Damn msg so heavy in cheena slang I also dunno wtf they toking... Lol!

Normally I see foreign telephone numbers which I do not know I will just choose to ignore it .
