This was when my local colleague went with me, passed by a stall, asked for a Cellcard sim, paid USD5 and left

Those travelling from HCM to PP by bus, can get the sim card w/o passport at the checkpoint. VND accepted.

Actually why is there such an aversion to registering your passport to get a SIM card? If you are here for shady business, I would understand the need. But if not.....

At the airport I believe SMART SIM (I could be wrong) is valid for a year, so you can use the same card over, without having to get a new one every time you are here, for the duration of a year, and more if you manage to time your visits right.

No aversion at all, I did use my passport at the airport.

It was fellow samster who asked whether can be done without passport. I suppose can save all the hassle at the market like what experience senior mentioned.

Sorry bro, not really directed at you, but in general. Anyway, keep the SIM after you leave, you might just be able to reuse it again when you come back (provided it's within the validity date) by topping it up with a dollar. Cheers.

All visitors to Phnom Penh next week, take note:

The Khmer New Year starts next week on the 14th, Sunday, but PP starts emptying out on Friday, 12th. Officially, the NY holiday is 3 days but with 14th being a Sunday, a day is extended but unofficially people starts getting back to work probably on the following Monday, 1 week!

Most of the bars have only a skeleton staff, including the restaurants and other tourist oriented service venues. If you're going to KTVs, Vietnamese populated ones are better bets but still, service will surely lag.

Keep that in mind next year. And I suppose this goes for other Indochina destinations -- Thailand, Laos, Cambodia as well. Not Vietnam though.

Thanks for the generous offer. SG is too rich for me. Here I can still afford to drink my USD26 bottle of 10 year old Laphroaigh, or my USD11.00 carton (24x330ml) of Anchor (pronounced an cher) Beer, smoke my USD5.30 carton (20x200) of Winston Lights, have a prime aged cote du boeuf dinner at the Open Wine Restaurant.

The same amount probably can't even buy me 1 carton of Winston in SG. And that about says it all. So I will be here for the holidays and enjoy the empty roads, no power outages, and relax. Hehe.
