Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Hi all, I found this in the NUS Vietnamese community forum talking about Sammyboy. Anyone can translate that???

So it depends on your motive to learn the language: If you wanna learn the correct form and wanna do business in Hanoi, Northern accent is the right choice. If you wanna improve your communication ability with the girls in JC or GL or to cheong in HCMC, then southern accent will be better, this you do not need a teacher, just learn from JackBL... hahaha ! By the way, the people from the north and south don't like each other very much. Last edited by Carrot007; 14-01-2009 at 03:56 PM. |

Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
How to imagine a teacher's pay is less than S$100 per day????
Long day, low pay ============================== Educators say teaching assistants’ low salaries aren’t enough to ensure children are clean, fed, rested and safe throughout the day. Teaching assistant Nguyen Thi Anh Tuyet at the Nguyen Viet Hong Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 3 starts her day at 7:30 a.m. tidying up the classroom before school. She washes used dishes from the day before and washes any towels or cleaning rags that have been left out. During students’ break times, Tuyet and her colleagues are tasked with supervising the children, making sure they play safe and don’t get into fights. If a student is injured after a fall or accident, parents often blame the assistants. Tuyet and other assistants feed the students at lunch, clean them up after meals and playtime and then make sure they take their naps. As many Vietnamese schools don’t let out until 5 p.m., Tuyet’s day is a long one. After school, she has to clean up the classroom while also keeping an eye on the students whose parents are late to pick them up. “My day ends when the last student is picked up by his or her parents, at around 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.,” she says. Teaching assistants throughout the city often work between 10 and 12 hours per day, says Principal Vu Thi Tho from Luong The Vinh Primary School in Go Vap District. It’s not only the long work, but the “invisible” pressures that get to them, says Nguyen Viet Hong School Principal Tran Thi Hanh. Assistants must watch over the children even when they sleep, essentially acting as a second mother, she says. Such a job is tough especially if the assistant already takes care of her own kids at home in addition to the dozens she looks after at school all day. Hanh says the assistants are held responsible for any problems the students cause outside of class. “Things are especially tough in the beginning of the year, when order has yet to be established. Assistants have to keep reminding kids to obey the rules,” she says. Teaching assistant Ngo Thi Le of Nguyen Viet Hong School says the assistants have to understand each student’s psychology to deal with them appropriately. “If parents find them with untidy clothes and hair, they will not be pleased,” Le says, adding they will also complain if their children do not gain weight every month. “If you don’t really love children, you can’t work as a teaching assistant,” Hanh says. But she argues that the greatest challenge for teaching assistants is not the children, it’s the pay. Hanh says that each assistant at her school is paid between VND600,000 and VND700,000 (US$34.21-39.91) each month. Teachers at the To Vinh Dien Primary School in Binh Thanh District are paid between VND800,000 and VND1 million ($45.61-57) per month. But as local prices continue to climb, VND800,000 is not enough for a family to feed, house and educate its children. Principal Dam Thi Minh Ngoc of Song Lo Primary School says the school has increased its teaching assistant salary from VND800,000 ($45.61) to VND1.2 million ($68.41) a month. “But it’s still low compared to the cost of living in the city,” Ngoc says. Hanh says, “many teaching assistants quit after working for a couple of months” due to the low salaries. Tham, a former primary school teaching assistant in the city, says it was hard for her to cover the cost of living with her salary and the job was so exhausting that she didn’t have time or energy to find extra work. “Although I loved the students so much, I had to quit,” she says. Several schools have begun trying to improve their teaching assistants’ salaries. This school year, Nguyen Viet Hong School has asked parents to pay extra fees to support the assistants, Hanh says, adding that if the parents agree, assistants will receive VND400,000 to VND500,000 ($22.80-28.50) more per month. Phu Nhuan District authorities have recently allowed local primary schools to charge extra fees of VND50,000 ($2.85) per month to increase assistants’ pay this school year. Good assistants should receive the same benefits of tenured teachers, according to Le Ngoc Diep, head of Preschool Education Bureau under the HCMC Department of Education and Training. Re: Tieng Viet lovers club
Meatlovers only
============================ The Brazilian all-you-can-eat BBQ at Au Lac do Brazil is not for anyone on a diet. This authentic churrascaria provides a full selection of churasco (grilled meat): beef steak, pork, sausages, lamb and chicken, all served rodizio style. Waiters bring meter-long skewers to the table and slice off large portions of everything they have until you say stop. On average, US$40 gets you a non-stop assault of lamb, pork, beef, shrimp, salad, bread and a wide array of sauces, dips and dressings ranging from simple mustard to more exotic Brazilian chili blends. For those going a la carte, the feijoada beef and bean stew is a lesser known treat and the shrimp thermidor is one of several tempting shrimp options, featuring succulent shrimp, onion, potato, and a layer of mozzarella cheese and tangy gravy. A carefully-selected wine list and shelves of liquor fit well in a setting where beer might seem a little too plebeian an accoutrement to all the meat. For those who are enchanted by the majestic Amazon River, the samba and the vast beaches of Brazil, Au Lac do Brazil is a place that should not missed. On the ground floor is a bamboo and thatch-roofed bar where you can order excellent Caipirinha along with other cocktails and wines to cool you down after wearing yourself out of the dance floor, which opens Tuesday to Saturday. Au Lac do Brazil is a refined way to satisfy the ravenous carnivore inside of us all. Check out its long-established venue at 238 Pasteur Street, District 3 or its newly-opened spot at Sky Garden II, Phu My Hung in District 7. Reported by Thuy Nhien
