8 injured in drive-by shooting in JB

JOHOR BARU: 8 people were injured when three gunmen fired shots at a restaurant at Jalan Dedap 24 in Taman Johor Jaya, here, yesterday.
It all started at 1.30am when seven people were set upon by several masked gunmen after they were seated at a round table in the restaurant.

The gunmen, who were in a car, then opened fire on those at the table.

"From the bullet casings found at the scene, at least 13 shots were fired.

"We have established that the weapons used were pistols," said Seri Alam police chief Superintendent Roslan Zainuddin.

The restaurant owner, identified only as Teo, 47, was among those who were shot.

He was warded at Sultan Ismail Hospital following the incident.

Teoh said a car had pulled up at the restaurant while the guests were enjoying their meal.

"The gunmen wore masks and opened fire without getting out of the car.

"They fled after firing shots at random."

Teo was shot in the back and left knee. He said he had invited his friends to his restaurant for a food tasting session.

A restaurant worker, who was in the kitchen at the time, was hit by five shots.

He was reported to be in critical condition and warded at Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

Another restaurant owner, who joined Teo for the food tasting, also sustained serious injuries.

He was reported to have been shot in the neck.

Johor Jaya assemblyman Tan Cher Puk visited Teo at the hospital.

Roslan said the case was classified as attempted murder.

Man shot outside JB hotel, critically hurt

May 13, 2013

JOHOR BARU, May 13 — A man in his 40s was seriously injured after being shot at the parking lot of a hotel in Jalan Dato Suleiman at around 3.30pm today.

A witness said the victim was heading to his car when he was approached by a man who fired four shots at him from about 20 metres.

“I heard four shots fired before seeing a man run away from the parking lot and escaping on a black Honda EX5 motorcycle together with an accomplice,” said the witness who did not wish to be identified.

Johor CID chief Datuk Dr Hashim Haron confirmed the incident and said the victim was in a stable condition at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here.
He said police were investigating the shooting from all angles. — Bernama

Clerk dies after being clubbed on back of head by snatch thief in Johor


40-year-old clerk Tar Bee Lin slipped into a coma and passed away after taking a blow to the back of the head from a snatch thief on May 23.

According to an article in The Star, she had been walking alone to a bus stop near her home in Taman Centyry at around 8am when a man on a motorcycle approached her from behind.

The snatch thief then hit her on the back of the head with a blunt object, causing her to fall onto the side of the road, before grabbing Tar's backpack containing her laptop, house keys and some clothes.

Concerned passers-by who noticed Tar lying on the ground quickly alerted the police, and an ambulance later rushed her to Hospital Sultanah Aminah for emergency treatment.

Tar's sister, who declined to be named, said that her sister slipped into a coma at around noon that day and passed away on Sunday night.

”She was supposed to return to Paloh to celebrate Vesak Day with our family members after work that day,” she said.

Singaporean assaulted by staff after trying to order thosai

JOHOR BARU: A craving for his regular thosai turned ugly for a 51-year-old Singaporean when he was assaulted by a waiter who had refused to take his order earlier.

Instead of fulfilling his appetite, N. Chandran ended up getting bruises on his face and neck following the brawl with the waiter outside the restaurant near Jalan Ungku Puan here.

Recalling Tuesday’s incident, Chandran, who works as a crane operator in the republic, said that he went to his favourite restaurant for lunch alone at about 12.10pm.

“When I reached the restaurant, I went straight into the kitchen and enquired with one of the helpers whether thosai was available for lunch.

“The helper said yes, suggesting that I make my order at the counter,” he said.

Chandran, a regular at the restaurant for the past four years, then approached a restaurant staff, who was manning the apom counter, and placed an order for thosai.

“However, I was told that there was no more thosai.

“I asked him to check with the kitchen before refusing to take my order.

“Instead, he (the apom maker) told me to leave the restaurant,” Chandran said, adding that the staff got angry when he questioned him, leading to him being pulled and punched in the face.

Chandran said although the restaurant was packed, no one came to his aid, not even the manager.

The manager, when asked yesterday about the incident, said thosai had been sold out by noon that day.

“However, he (Chandran) started creating a ruckus and began hurling vulgarities at my staff at the apom counter,” he claimed.

He said Chandran also toppled one of the apom woks, prompting the fight.

A police official from the Johor Baru South police station confirmed that a report had been lodged and that investigations were being conducted.

Woman abducted, robbed, beaten in JB


When she went to Johor Baru to collect her medication on Tuesday morning, Madam Rajeswary Kartigeyan (above) expected it to be another routine trip across the Causeway.

But to her horror, the 64-year-old Malaysian, who lives with her youngest son in Singapore, found herself in a harrowing two-hour nightmare.

Madam Rajeswary said she was abducted by at least three people outside Sultanah Aminah Hospital.

She was bundled into the back seat of a car, bound, blindfolded and gagged with tape, and told she would be “murdered” if she did not comply with their demands.

They then robbed her of her money and valuables, and dumped her at an oil palm plantation.

Worried Singaporeans give Malaysian holiday plans a miss

Singaporeans, alarmed at the recent spate of shooting cases all around Malaysia, have gone on to alter their travel plans, with some postponing their trips, fearing for their lives.

In the past fornight, at least 13 such incidents were reported, including the high-profile case of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank founder Hussain Ahmad Najadi, who was gunned down on July 29 at a carpark in Kuala Lumpur.

Today Online reported that Singaporean Lim Jiuan, 53, cancelled her trip to Malaysia following the shooting incidents. She and her family had planned to spend the long Hari Raya weekend at the Berjaya Hills resort near Genting Highlands.

“In the past week, there have been many cases of violence, so we decided not to go, and to remain in Singapore,” she said.

A group of eight friends, including 32-year-old businessman Roy Soh, changed their plans of driving up to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night. They left on Thursday morning instead.

“We wanted to beat the traffic jams, but a few of us were quite worried about safety issues driving through the night. We felt that it’s better to take breaks at rest-stops during the day, rather than at night.”

Singaporeans who were already holidaying in Malaysia were also concerned about their safety, the online portal reported.

Lynette Wong, 26, who is in Kuala Lumpur, said she and her 11 friends continued with their holiday plans even though their parents had advised them against it, as they were in need of a break.

She, however, said the capital city "looks as per normal so far". But she noted that the three shooting cases in Penang two days ago was a cause for concern, adding that the group will stay together and not attract unnecessary attention to themselves.

Despite the concerns, many Singaporeans continued with their travel into Malaysia - as seen by the massive traffic jams which started on Wednesday night and went on until Thursday afternoon - showing that the recent cases were targeted attacks.

As part of their annual Hari Raya ritual, Salamon Sungip, 58, and his family left for Batu Pahat yesterday, pointing out that “killings happen everywhere, so no difference”.

Ilyas Selamat - a 26-year-old engineer - said he continued to drive into Johor Baru to fill up on petrol twice a week as the shootings “do not involve regular civilians”.

Singaporeans play it safe amid spate of crime in Malaysia

A recent spate of violent crimes in Malaysia has not put Singaporeans off going there. However, many are playing it safe, The Straits Times has found.

At least 24 people have been killed and 21 injured since April in shootings and robberies in areas including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Miss Candice Lim, a management trainee based in Kuala Lumpur, never leaves her house without a pepper spray.

She also uses the MyTeksi application on her phone to book taxis, which allows her friends and family to track her ride.

Safety travel tips for Malaysia
•Don't walk around alone. Always try to be accompanied.
•Don't carry handbags or cash with you unless necessary.
•Carry any bags in front of you and cover them. Do not sling them on the side.
•Be alert of your surroundings and look out for suspicious people.
•Lock car doors whenever possible, even when pumping petrol.
•Don't change a large sum of money and count it in public. Change money in Singapore if possible.

S'porean couple live in fear after JB smash-and-grab

A smash-and-grab incident in Johor Baru has not only left a Singaporean couple in shock, but also in fear that they might no longer be safe in their own home.

Ms Fie, 41, a property agent, and her husband, who wanted to be known only as Mr Muka, 42, were in their car in Johor Baru when two men on a motorcycle smashed the front passenger side window and snatched a handbag containing Ms Fie’s identity card and the keys to their Bukit Batok flat.

The couple are now traumatised and fear the thieves could come to their home in Singapore. They have since sent their children to live with relatives.

Two Malaysians speaking to The New Paper advise Singaporeans to keep a look-out for motorcyclists, as many crimes in Malaysia are committed by crooks on motorbikes.

My friend sent us this information. Though we can't verify it, it's a warning to take note as many of us drive in to JB for makan and provision.

Travelling is a wonderful experience when you want to get away from the humdrum daily routine.. It's just that the natives there can make it troublesome. Even if you take along the correct passport.

The traffic department (JPJ) has recently started a campaign to be rid of corruption. Every Officer on duty will be rewarded with RM100.00 if they report each case of bribery to the department.

This is how they do (trick you into) it. They will note down the details of your IC/MyKad, and ask you how you want to settle ( 'Macam mana nak selesai?')

If you indicate yes or even offer to give them any money, they will report the incident by rejecting your 'Kopi Money' and get the RM100.00 instead as an incentive for their integrity and 'Honest' pubicity.

This means that You will end up having a summon issued to you and perhaps a charge for bribery. SO DON'T PAY DUIT KOPI AGAIN, especially if you hope to go free with a lesser amount of money compared to the fine. Even if you want to pay over RM200, the JPJ Officers would rather have a 'good' name than to take your kopi money.

Just beware of their trick because the cops are now accumulating 'cookies' points for their promotion and pay increment - with your help if possible. They should have done this to stop corruption long time ago... But anyway it's better late than never, right?
