Just went to one of the shanghai ktv with some taiwanese and American associates. The price is pretty reasonable and the chicks are quite nice. Even the mamasan has the looks of those Korea models. However, seems like everyone very cautious in the room. Just hugging and fondling but no action. Dunno is it now wind too strong or everyone shy in front of others I manage to get the numbers of the girls and want to jio them out for some clubbing action to see whether there are some opportunities
Kindly allow me to relate my experience. A group of Customers (1st time in Shanghai) was walking around the pedestrain street @ Nanking West Road. I have forewarned them not to follow touts loitering there regardless how good the offers were. Against my advice, they (7 of them) were hooked and went to a underground KTV. They were served stale beer and each had a meimei seated beside them. When they asked for the bill, they were billed RMB16,000.00 making it per person RMB2,250.00
This is definately day-light robbery but they can't do much except to settle the bill accordingly, otherwise there will be big trouble because at the moment in time, there were many bouncers standing by. When the bill came, they even brought in a portable credit card validating machine. No where to run. Thank god no one was injured and I think they paid a heavy price and hopefully, they have learnt an expensive lesson.
So, let me repeat, DO NOT follow touts especially in the pedestrial street. Do it at your own peril. REMEMBER, we are afterall in a foreign land and safety is always PARAMOUNT and no compromisng safety.

In the Walking Mall at Nanjing East Road, the scheme does not limit to bring the unawared tourists to KTV, but also to an eating joint or a cafe. Beware of that as well. I know of one such joint which is on the second floor, below which is a big shop selling Shanghainese tit-bits.

We can never be too careful in a foreign land. For those who were not careful and had been extorted in the cafe, many brothers have posted the mode of operations in this thread. The episode happens very often in Nanjing East Road walking mall.
If you allow, I would just repeat what I have learnt from others. What I am going to describe happens more on foreigner who is alone there. Two SYTs (Bro prcsytlover, be careful) will approach the guy, pretending to ask for direction. More likely than not, the guy will say he does not have any knowledge as he is not a local. The two girls will say that they are from an out of shanghai city, and are very thirsty and tired. They would ask the guy whether he could buy them drinks and/or snacks. If the guy says yes, the two girls will say that they know a place where the drinks and snacks are cheap (If you are careful, this will raise some suspicion, as if they were asking for direction, how could they know the cheap eating/drinking joint). If the guy follows them, he would end up at a "Black Shop" where he would be extorted after entering the joint. He would be paying exorbitant price for the simple drinks and snacks that the girls order. The paying of bill is under the watchful eyes of some thugs looking guys.
The shop that I have mentioned is at the corner of a row of shop houses, second floor. The notable feature is that the ground floor of the cafe is a big shop selling tit-bits. The staircase is inside the shop.

bro, just remember this can liao: As long as an offer/transaction sounds too good to be true, you better f**king be careful. In any places (not just shanghai), don't heck care those who came to intro you stuff/places when you're outside. if it's so good, no need to do intro one..most places are covered by the bros here anyway.

PTR, actually most of the scams are easily spotted if one uses the bigger head. like the e.g. you gave. many years back, there are even chio bus along Nangjing Walk asking me for the time when in fact they are wearing watches themselves...power right? i think they are giving us guys a one chance to tell them off, if we choose to follow them...then what to do?

Shanghai is indeed an expensive place. That's why Shanghainese and those residing there travel to their rear garden as in Suzhou, KunShan and even JiaXing in ZheJiang. Some even fly down south to play in DongGuan.
